Budapest’s chief architect has approved the concept for a new pedestrian Budapest bridge to Óbuda Island, with the 138-metre-long, 3.5-metre-wide crossing to be built entirely from private funding, developer Biggeorge Property said on Tuesday.

In a statement to MTI, the company said the slender, clean-lined, step-free bridge — fitted with a lift and cycle wheel channels — will run from the central square of its Waterfront City scheme and span the HÉV line, the embankment and the branch of the Danube to create a direct link with Óbuda Island.
Equipped with street lighting and decorative illumination, the crossing will be the island’s fourth bridge — and the first designed for pedestrians — after Árpád Bridge, K Bridge and H Bridge.
The concept for the pedestrian bridge was drawn up by Speciálterv. The documentation, which has been coordinated with the relevant authorities and utility providers, could be submitted for permitting within weeks, the statement said.
The developer said the multi-billion-forint public-benefit investment is being financed 100 per cent from private sources, and together with residents of the Waterfront developments it will give several thousand people in the neighbouring housing estates a direct link to the island’s parks within a few minutes’ walk.

The statement also said that, as part of the Waterfront Park project, significant transport improvements will be carried out alongside the pedestrian bridge, while the 70-year-old utility network will also be renewed. In addition, several hundred new or refurbished public parking spaces will be created in the area to meet the increased parking demand generated by previously built residential blocks.
Work on the Promenade will continue as planned, and a new street linking Szentendre Road and the Filatorigát HÉV stop will also be completed, with the developer providing the land free of charge.
A further 130 municipal rental flats will also be built in Waterfront Park, which the Budapest city council will lease from the developer at a preferential rate, while the Óbuda district council will receive 1.2 billion forints from the company for social infrastructure development and rental housing construction.
