Number of people smuggling cases up drastically, says government spokesman
Budapest, November 25 (MTI) – The number of people smuggling cases has increased considerably over the past years, the government spokesman said on Wednesday evening.
There were altogether 150 instances known to Hungarian authorities in 2010, whereas 350 instances were revealed in 2014 and as many as 535 until October this year, Zoltan Kovacs told public television M1.
Hungarian police and its border control units have this year detained 1,168 people smugglers, he said.
“Global migration is a big global business,” he said, making reference to a study conducted in Germany, according to which human smuggling in Europe had yielded 16 billion euros over the past 13-15 years.
He said that the fence Hungary has erected at its southern border had been serving the purpose since the number of migrants seeking to cross to Hungary illegally had dropped to only a dozen over the recent past.
