Hungary is set for a dramatic weather divide this week as a wavy cold front crosses the country, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures to the west while summer-like warmth lingers in the east.
Wednesday will bring us one more warm day
According to a forecast video from the meteorologists at HungaroMet, the contrast will be particularly noticeable on Thursday, before another, even stronger cold front arrives early next week.
Wednesday will begin with a southerly airflow, bringing temporary warming to the Carpathian Basin. After patches of morning fog clear, mostly sunny conditions are expected, with afternoon temperatures reaching 23–28°C. Winds will strengthen in several areas, with particularly strong gusts possible around the Kisalföld region and Lake Fertő.
Cold front will divide the country
The weather will change considerably on Thursday as a cold front reaches Hungary and becomes temporarily stalled over the country. This will create a striking contrast between the western and eastern parts of the country.
Temperatures in western and north-western Hungary are expected to reach only 19–20°C, while the eastern Great Plain could still see highs of 28–30°C. Despite the unusually large regional difference, HungaroMet says the national average temperature will remain broadly in line with the seasonal norm.
The temperature divide will persist into Friday, while conditions become increasingly favourable for precipitation across a larger part of the country. Rain, showers and thunderstorms may develop in several areas, making Friday a more unsettled day.

Weekend offers temporary respite, but cold reclaims Hungary on Monday
By Saturday, the frontal system is expected to move eastwards away from Hungary. Some light rain may still occur across southern and eastern areas, but sunshine will dominate elsewhere. The temperature contrast will remain, with noticeably cooler conditions in Transdanubia while temperatures fall less sharply across the Great Plain.
Western areas may begin to warm gradually again during the weekend, but the improvement is unlikely to last. A new, fast-moving and more pronounced cold front is forecast to reach the region on Monday, bringing another 3–4°C drop in temperatures nationwide. The next front is not expected to produce particularly heavy precipitation, however, with only moderate rainfall effects currently anticipated.
