Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s activities amount to “preparations for a world war”, the foreign minister told public radio on Sunday. Péter Szijjártó said that European and North Atlantic leaders “are suffering from war psychosis and feel they are at war with Russia”. The greatest difference between that approach and Hungary’s is that “we don’t think the events in Ukraine are our war,” he added.
Hungary wants to focus on bringing the war to an end as soon as possible, he said. A pro-peace turnaround at the European parliamentary elections and a pro-peace president coming to power in the US in November would be “our best chance at peace”, he added.
While NATO earlier held the stance that it was not a party in the war between Russia and Ukraine and that everything should be done to avoid a conflict between the organisation and Russia, “certain member states have started to change that, and they’re pushing [NATO] into a coordinating role in weapon deliveries and Ukrainian military training,” Szijjártó said.
Szijjártó insisted that Hungary would soon come under pressure to participate in those operations. “That will not happen as long as we are on power,” he said.
He said the start of the war had prompted a “compulsion to compete and comply” in the EU, and “it has been said at several NATO foreign ministers’ meeting that Europe could not help Ukraine as much as the US.”
Szijjártó said he had voiced the opinion that “it is unfortunate to compete with the largest military superpower of the world, and that weapon deliveries will only prolong the war”. “Neither party can win this war, it can be ended only through negotiations.”
“As responsible governing decision-makers, our primary task is to preserve Hungarians’ safety, and that means staying out of the war,” he said.
Szijjártó expresses condolences to Oman over floods
Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, has expressed his sympathies to the Omani Sultanate over floods that killed 21 people, and thanked the country for freeing two Hungarian nationals who had been stranded by the waters.
“I was greatly saddened to hear about the consquences of the devastating weather ravaging the Omani Sultanate lately. I was shocked to hear the floods have claimed the lives of 21 people, 12 children among them,” Szijjártó said in a letter to his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr Al-Busaidi.
Szijjártó also expressed his thanks to Omani authorities for their “indefatiguable rescue work when they airlifted two stranded Hungarian nationals to safety.”
“We are deeply grateful for their heroic work under those extraordinary circumstances,” Szijjártó said.

Orban must be praying for prolonging this war and using the same scary speeches again and again. No one wants war, but is he is so pro oeace, then he should be also asking to his friend to stop the aggression. Or maybe if he doesn’t want to get involved, he just should leave EU and NATO. Hungary alone will not protect even debrecen.
That’s why they do not tell Victor anything, like an old lady he blabs it to everyone!
Ukraine´s predicament only goes to demonstrate the importance of being prepared and part of an alliance (welcome to NATO, Finland and Sweden).
If our Politicians consider this “preparing for World War”, so be it.
Paradoxically, don´t hear them complaining about the global arms industry locating in Hungary – quite the opposite (red carpet / VIP!).
EU and NATO are not preparing for war. Dumb statement.
But Orban supports putin who is wagging an aggressive war against a sovereign country. If Orban wants peace, tell Putin to get out of Ukraine.
