Orbán’s oldest ally resigns over the PM’s openly racist speech

Compared Viktor Orbán to Goebbels and resigned Zsuzsa Hegedűs, the prime minister’s envoy. According to Hegedűs, Orbán made an openly racist speech in Tusnádfürdő, which Goebbels would have liked. She said he went beyond the limits of acceptability. She believes that Orbán’s rhetoric, which could be described as pure Nazi, is something she cannot forgive the prime minister for, even given their friendship of almost 20 years.
According to hvg.hu, Zsuzsa Hegedűs, the Prime Minister’s envoy, submitted her resignation on Tuesday. The sociologist decided to leave because of Viktor Orbán’s openly racist speech in Tusnádfürdő last weekend. The politician was Viktor Orbán’s most senior advisor.
Her letter to Orbán
The sociologist wrote a long letter to the Prime Minister, which she delivered on Tuesday morning. The old acquaintance led her to express her very tough views on Viktor Orbán’s speech in Tusnádfürdő last Saturday, reports Index.hu.
“I sincerely regret that such a disgraceful resolution has forced me to sever a relationship that, although increasingly difficult for me to manage since your illiberal turn, seemed sustainable in the short term. However, after such a speech, which goes against all my fundamental values, I have no choice: despite the fact that you never restricted my full freedom in any way, as you originally asked, I must now publicly break with you because of what you said in Tusnádfürdő.”
His racism surprised her
She also reminded Orbán in the letter that she had already personally told him that the “homophobic” law had already exceeded the limits of what she considered unacceptable, and that she had continued her mandate and work on the inclusion programme, but that “your speech in Tusványos (the festival in Tusnádfürdő – ed.) surprised me even despite these precedents”.
She added: “I don’t know how you didn’t realise that you were turning your previous anti-migrant and anti-Europeanism into a pure Nazi text worthy of Goebbels when, as usual, you read through the speech. But I cannot, because of the gravity of the fact, even in our friendship of nearly 20 years, overlook that this time.”
Surprisingly sickening words
Viktor Orbán’s words at the Bálványos Summer Free University and Student Camp in Tusnádfürdő have provoked strong protests. The Prime Minister said that “in the Carpathian Basin, we are not a mixed race, but a mixture of peoples living in our own European homeland (…) We are willing to mix with each other, but we do not want to become a mixed race.”
Orbán’s answer letter to Hegedűs
The PM reacted to his ally resigning in a letter. You may read it below.
“Dear Zsuzsa,
You can’t seriously think of accusing me of racism after twenty years of working together. You know best that in Hungary, my government has a zero tolerance policy towards anti-Semitism and racism. We have known each other for ages. You know that I believe that God created every human being in his own image. Therefore racism is excluded ab ovo for people like me.
I regret your decision, by the way. I acknowledge it.”
