Several mountainous regions of Hungary have become dangerous due to the heavy snowfall the last couple of days.

According to blikk.hu, the minor roads leading to Kékestető, Hungary’s highest peak (1014m) were closed yesterday to the public. The Magyar Közút (Hungarian Roads), responsible for maintaining the public roads in Hungary, said they decided so for the safety of the people.

They said the snow that fell in the higher regions of the mountain contained a great deal of water. As a result, they are heavy and cause tree falls, endangering everybody on the roads. Furthermore, based on the forecasts, more rain, snow and strong wind are expected during the weekend in the Mátra region. The closure will remain in effect until Sunday at 7 pm but does not concern buses.

According to utinform.hu, roads between Eger-Hollóstető and Miskolc have also been closed because of dangerous tree falls. Police are navigating the traffic there.

According to blikk.hu, many parts of Hungary were exposed to harsh winter weather this morning. For example, in Bánkút, Northeast Hungary, the snow is so thick that it is difficult even to walk. In some places, it even reaches 40 centimetres. Meanwhile, the lower regions in Hungary are still waiting for snow.

Below are some photos and videos.
