Prime Minister Péter Magyar said turbine number 3 of the second unit of the Paks nuclear power plant will start generating electricity from Monday evening.
In a post on social media Monday Magyar said that this morning the water level of the Danube was 19cm above the low point reached a week ago, and the process of restarting a turbine at the NPP has begun.
PM Magyar to speak ahead of agenda, parliament debate continues
Parliament’s two-day extraordinary session will start with PM Magyar’s speech ahead of the agenda on Monday. Two Fidesz lawmakers are scheduled to take oath of office, and parliament is scheduled to debate committee reports and amendment proposals to legislation on health care, the strike rights of teachers and eliminating the state of emergency, among other matters.
The house resumes work after last week’s cancellation due to extreme heat and energy-saving measures. The session is set to start at 13:00, according to the official website.
Following Magyar’s address and remarks by parliamentary group leaders, two new MPs, Olivér Hortay and André Palóc, will take their oaths. János Bóka, leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, announced earlier this month that Hortay and Palóc would replace Péter Szijjártó and Gyula Budai, who resigned their seats, and join the Fidesz parliamentary group.
Parliament debates on different issues continue
Parliament then will debate an amendment proposal to health-care data management laws to allow pregnancy care providers to access syphilis infection data even if the screening did not take place within their care, aiming to accelerate syphilis detection and prenatal treatment.
Lawmakers will also table an amendment to education laws removing restrictions on the right to strike for those employed in public education and abolishing the rule that professional matters must be coordinated solely with the National Teachers’ Chamber.
A change to the law on transitional rules related to the end of the state of emergency and epidemic preparedness will be next on the agenda, eliminating the ministerial discretionary power to designate sites for battery recycling plants.
Further, lawmakers will discuss an amendment to the 2026 central budget law incorporating changes related to commitments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the obligation to pay into the Regional Development Fund.
New president to be elected on Tuesday
If parliament approves the proposal, the compatibility conditions for officials of the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture, Food Industry, and Rural Development will tighten. In future, the organisation’s officials cannot be parliamentary or European parliamentary candidates, county assembly chairmen or members, mayors, government political executives, or government officials acting as supporters under the state budget law in the agricultural subsidy system. Additionally, the chamber’s officials will be barred from holding positions in political parties.

As parliament is scheduled to vote on the new president on Tuesday, parliamentary groups have until 10:00 on Monday to submit their nominations. The house committee will review the nominations at a meeting starting at 12:30.
At its Saturday parliamentary group meeting, the ruling Tisza party decided to nominate Andras Baka, the former president of the Supreme Court, for the presidency. Mi Hazank announced at the end of July that it would propose Mate Toth, an energy lawyer, for the position, although its six-member parliamentary group cannot officially submit a nomination.
