President Áder meets Ban Ki-moon, Hungarian inventors in NY
New York, April 23 (MTI) – Hungarian President János Áder met UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon on Friday, local time, during a visit to New York on the occasion the Paris Climate Agreement was signed at the UN Headquarters.
The landmark agreement, approved in Paris last December, was signed by leaders of 171 countries, including 60 heads of state and government, and will enter into force once 55 countries representing at least 55 percent of global emissions of gases responsible for global warming have ratified it.
Áder also put forward three proposals after the ceremony, urging action to help achieve the goals defined in the Paris Agreement. These include a call for talks by the top ten greenhouse gas emitters on ways to reduce their emissions faster, speeding up talks on emissions cuts in in aviation and starting similar talks on maritime transport, as well as launching research into improving energy storage.
“Nature has been giving us warnings every day since Paris: temperature records were broken one by one last year,” Áder said. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has never been as high as it is now, Áder warned, adding that last year twice as much was spent on investing in renewable energy than on fossil energy worldwide.
After the ceremony at the UN Headquarters Áder attended a presentation at Columbia University where the an invention using gravity waves dubbed the “cosmic ear” was introduced. Áder met Hungarian scientists involved in the invention and discussed the possibility of building the first device which measures gravity waves in Hungary.
Szabolcs Márka, the head of the research group, said the new device records signals from the universe and will be able to provide more information on galaxy systems, the history of the Earth, black holes and other questions in astrophysics. He said Hungary has many excellent scientists and it would improve the country’s reputation internationally if the development was hosted in Hungary.
