Prosecutor presses sexual assault charge against Syrian
The Budapest prosecutor’s office has brought charges against a Syrian national suspected of sexually assaulting a Hungarian woman in the capital, the prosecutor said on Friday.
The 40-year-old Syrian man claiming to be Greek introduced himself to a woman in a club in district eight on Jan. 1 in the early hours. They then went to the man’s apartment in district nine, Ibolya Tibor said in a statement.
Casual contact allegedly turned violent after the Syrian man attempted a sexual assault on the woman who defended herself by repeatedly kicking him and pushing him away, said Ibolya.
After holding her by her hair, the man finally released her and she escaped the apartment before immediately reporting the incident to the police.
The Syrian man has been put in pre-trial detention and could face a prison sentence of up to eight years, the prosecutor said.
