A 24-year-old Georgian tourist allegedly attempted to rape an 18-year-old Hungarian girl in Hajdúszoboszló, before Chinese women living nearby intervened. The man is said to have dragged his victim towards a patch of bushes, where she began shouting for help in English. Several Chinese women living in the area heard her cries.
Georgian man was visiting Hungary as a tourist
The 24-year-old Georgian national had travelled to Hungary as a tourist. However, he may not be returning home any time soon after being suspected of committing a serious criminal offence.
He met the young Hungarian woman in a park surrounded by blocks of flats in Hajdúszoboszló. They initially drank together, but the man allegedly wanted more.
He began touching and kissing the woman against her will. When she pulled away and resisted, he grabbed her by the wrist and dragged her towards a darker, overgrown area, allegedly intending to rape her. The woman then began shouting for help in English.
Chinese women rescued Hungarian teenager
Several Chinese women living on a floor of a neighbouring block of flats heard the cries. They also called out in English, asking whether the woman was in trouble and needed help. Moments later, she replied in the affirmative. By the time local residents became aware of what was happening, they saw only a man running out of the bushes and attempting to flee. Authorities identified and arrested him using footage from public CCTV cameras.
He has been remanded in custody pending trial because of concerns that he might flee or go into hiding, as well as the possibility that he could attempt to influence or intimidate the victim and witnesses. If convicted, he could face up to eight years in prison. He refused to speak to RTL Híradó, which reported on the disturbing incident. When asked directly in English whether he was willing to answer a few questions, he replied with a firm “no”.

Where will he serve his sentence?
If he is convicted and receives the minimum custodial sentence of two years for attempted rape, he could serve his sentence either in Hungary or in Georgia.
If he remains in Hungary, he will not receive special treatment. He would be held in a prison alongside Hungarian and foreign inmates, most likely at one of the capital’s Venyige Street or Nagy Ignác Street facilities.
However, the convicted man, the Hungarian state or the Georgian state could apply for him to be extradited to Georgia to serve his sentence there. The necessary international agreements are in place, but the authorities of both countries would have to approve the transfer.
