Romanian people smuggler sentenced to prison

MTI – A Romanian man has been sentenced to four years in prison in a final decision by a court in Zalaegerszeg in western Hungary for smuggling 37 people in one month over the Hungarian border, a court spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The man smuggled illegal migrants to Hungary and other countries of the European Union between October 22 and November 10, 2024, for money, Judit Mentes said.

He picked up mostly Syrian and Palestinian nationals in line with instructions received from a so far unidentified person, transported them to the Hungarian-Austrian and Hungarian-Slovenian borders, from where the illegal migrants could continue on foot through the green border, she said. The man had been offered 1,000 euros for every successful transport, she added.

In addition to four years in prison, the court also ruled to prohibit the man from public affairs for four years, and expelled him from Hungary for eight years.
