Shanghai Grand Theater: China-Hungary co-production reopens
Over now to the on-going Shanghai International Arts Festival, where an opera co-produced by troupes from China and Hungary has premiered at the Shanghai Grand Theater. It’s the first show at the theater since it underwent an eight month renovation, CCTV reports.
CCTV said, The opera Attila was co-produced by the Palace of Arts Budapest, Shanghai Grand Theater Arts Center and the Shanghai Opera House to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi. The three-act play tells the story of Attila the Hun, who invaded Rome but was killed by his lover. The opera’s director says they chose the story because of its relationship to the two countries.
CCTV underlined, Csaba Kael, Director of Palace of Arts Budapest, said, “The Huns live in the northern part of the Great Wall of China. But they moved to Europe, and this time the Huns are our relatives. That’s why our names in European languages is Hungarians.”
Chinese and Hungarian singers shared the stage, and two Italian singers were invited to play the leading role of Attila. The Chinese team designed all the costumes and Hungarians were in charge of the stage design.
