Fathers raising children alone should also be exempt from personal income tax, says Hungarian opposition party

The Democratic Coalition (DK) has proposed a bill to extend the personal income tax (PIT) exemption, which currently applies to mothers with two children, to fathers who are raising their children alone, the party’s parliamentary spokesperson announced at an online press conference on Saturday.

Olga Kálmán stated that it will now be revealed whether the ruling Fidesz party values maximising votes or actually improving the quality of life for families with children. If the latter, she is calling on government party members of parliament to support the DK proposal.

The politician emphasised that the government often acts as if only families with at least two children matter, which she believes is unjust. She argued that no child should be valued less than another, regardless of whether they have siblings.

“We have a responsibility for every child, even if they don’t have a sibling,” she stressed.

Furthermore, she continued, the current system of income tax benefits favours those who already earn more, which only exacerbates the already severe social inequalities.

Fathers who raise their children alone are fighting on two fronts as well: they must perform well both at work and in parenting. This measure is particularly timely, as data from the 2022 census shows that in 64,000 families, the father is the one responsible for parenting duties, Kálmán pointed out.

The opposition politician emphasised that, as a left-wing party, the DK has always advocated that every child is equally important. In other words, a left-wing government would “not discriminate between children,” but would pursue a responsible, nurturing family policy.
