Sleeping man mugged at Oktogon – VIDEO

A sleeping man was robbed at Oktogon, Budapest last night. The young man fell asleep at the tram stop where later three men – two 19-year-old and a 34-year-old – approached him.

According to the police , the three men noticed that the victim was in a drunken, half-asleep state and while two of them sat down by his sides, the third man stayed standing to cover as the two took his phone. The incident occurred at Oktogon, at the tram stop of the busiest tram line, the 4-6.

Luckily, the action was caught by the policemen who were watching the surveillance cameras and arrived at the scene in time to successfully retrieve the victim’s phone. Upon interrogation by local detectives, one of the younger perpetrators confessed that he had no intention of taking his phone:

“We were only trying to wake him up.”

Most often the victims of plunder are people who are not in the position to defend themselves: the elderly and intoxicated individuals are just two groups on a long list. Just recently, the police had also arrested a middle-aged woman who offered massage services and while massaging her clients, she stole their necklaces and other pieces of jewelry. However, there were cases where a man attempted to rob his local bar three times with a nylon bag over his head (only ended up taking a bench) and a woman who just like the three men stole from a sleeping person.

The surveillance cameras thankfully help battle most of these cases, and the police can catch the perpetrators easier. Without them, most of these cases would probably go unnoticed and people would have a harder time getting their property back – if they would at all.

The Hungarian law states that the act of despoilment and plunder that is committed individually or as a group could be punished by imprisonment for two to eight years.

According to the Budapest Police Headquarters, the three men were taken into custody and a court hearing has been initiated.
