The opposition Socialists will propose two referendums “for the protection of public funds” in the coming days, the party’s head and group leader said on Friday.

The Socialists want parliament to oblige the government to join the European public prosecutor’s office and to have government spending on communications distributed on the basis of readership and viewing figures, Bertalan Toth said citing a decision made by the party board on Thursday.

Ruling Fidesz has demonstrated “an aversion to” joining the European public prosecutor’s office, he said. Public monies are “getting lost everywhere” and no matter how many times this is reported, the Hungarian prosecutor’s office refuses to take action, he added.

The government spends tens of billions of forints on communications and the benefits are only “enjoyed by the friends of Fidesz”, he said.

The Socialists want this money to be distributed more evenly, in a way that reflects how many viewers and readers the media outlets attract.

Sure, how about the Socialists come forth and explain and return all the money they stole from the Hungarian people while they were in power. Then we can talk referendums if it even is worth looking at…

Trust is the big issue. I completely agree with your comment Vedo. When a government is in power, they are expected tp be straight lace with no lies. The Socialists when in power up to 2010 were never straight lace and were regarded as a bunch of liars. In my whole life, I have never known a Socialist government in any country to be honest and honerable, and that goes for Hungary too. Remember 1988, when the Communists lost their power and Russia became anty Communist/Socialist. Socialist power still dominated Hungary basically right up the Orbán government taking over 2010. Gyurcsány, in power, made millions at the expense of the people, putting thousands out of work, closing companies and selling them off for personal prophet. He basically put Hungary into bankrupsy. If it wasn’t for Orbán Viktor and his merry men, Hungary would have been lost. So, how can anyone in their right mind trust the Socialists, and others that bear the mark in the opposition parties. Socialism and Liberalism is coming to an end, and the people are proving that statement.
