Hungary is finally set to feel the arrival of autumn, with a significant cooling trend expected over the coming days. After temperatures soared to 30–34°C earlier this week — around 7–9°C above the seasonal average — a cold front is now sweeping across the country, bringing cooler temperatures, cloudier skies and showers.

According to HungaroMet, temperatures rose further on Wednesday ahead of the approaching cold front, reaching 30–35°C in places. The front then began moving into the country from the northwest, bringing stronger winds and stormy weather, particularly to western Hungary.

The Őrség region was already experiencing overcast skies and strong winds on Wednesday afternoon as the change in weather began to make itself felt.

Temperatures could drop below 10°C at night

The coming days will be considerably cooler. On Thursday, daytime temperatures are expected to fall to between 21 and 29°C, while scattered rain, showers and thunderstorms could occur in the evening. Night-time temperatures will also become noticeably lower, ranging from 13 to 19°C on Thursday.

The biggest change is expected over the weekend, when temperatures could fall to around 10°C or even below in some areas overnight, particularly in the northern counties. Despite the chilly nights, daytime temperatures are still expected to remain above 20°C in most places.

A Mediterranean cyclone could briefly bring the heat back

The weather could remain unsettled, however, as a Mediterranean cyclone is expected to approach from the southwest. Its exact path remains uncertain because the system has not yet fully developed.

The cyclone could temporarily bring warmer air back into Hungary, particularly to the south-eastern parts of the country. As a result, temperatures in these areas could climb back towards 30°C on Friday, with some locations potentially exceeding that mark.

The brief warm spell would, however, come after the arrival of the cold front and is not expected to signal a return to the prolonged summer heat experienced earlier this week. For now, the message from forecasters is that Hungary’s exceptionally warm summer weather is giving way to much cooler autumn-like conditions, particularly after dark.
