Radical Mi Hazánk party protested against NATO, ‘Covid dictatorship’

Radical-party-Mi-Hazank-Budapest

The non-parliamentary radical Mi Hazánk party held a demonstration on Sunday in the Castle District against the deployment of NATO battle groups in Hungary and measures related to Covid-19 described by party leaders as a “Covid dictatorship”.

The protesters originally intended to hold the demonstration in front of the prime minister’s office but in the end they gathered in front of the Sándor Palace, the president’s office next door.

László Toroczkai, the party’s chairman, insisted the World Health Organization (WHO) and its director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, an “Ethiopian terrorist villain”, wanted to take over the world.

The coronavirus, he added, was an “artificial bioweapon used against humanity”, while the war in Ukraine served the same purpose of creating a new world order to enrich global corporations.

These top Hungarian restaurants in Budapest are coming back to life!

Even though both are Hungarian and both are in Budapest, these restaurants are strikingly different. One thing is for sure, though: both are opening again.

Kádár étkezde (Kádár canteen)

Back in January, we listed some restaurants that fell pray to COVID. In the article, we talked about Kádár étkezde (Kádár canteen) and how it was not only struggling due to the pandemic but also was up for sale. Now, the restaurant is reviving and is opening in a week.

As can be read in our previously mentioned article, Kádár canteen had been a favourite with its red-and-white checkered tablecloths, soda bottles, and home-style flavours for more than 60 years before it closed in 2020 – what everyone thought would be forever.

Now, however, it seems that Sándor Orbán will not let the widely loved and cherished restaurant go to waste. After 33 years, he will hand it over to an operator who will take care of its traditions, as we can read in turizmusonline.hu’s article. Over the decades, many artists, athletes, politicians, and media workers visited the place, and hopefully, this will continue in the future as well.

The other restaurant that is opening again was Hungary’s first restaurant to get a Michelin star: Costes is rising from its ashes. Maybe not literally, since even though the restaurant was closed during the waves of COVID-19, for two years, only those who invited the restaurant’s staff to prepare and serve food in their own kitchens were able to enjoy the restaurant’s dishes.

As we can read in turizmusonline.hu’s article, the restaurant, which made fine dining history, opened its doors in 2008. Less than a year and a half later, it was awarded a Michelin star for its outstanding professionalism. Now, after two long and hard years, we are able to enjoy their excellent food again.

Also good news – and a surprise! – is that Jenő Rácz, a Hungarian star chef, is joining Costes’s staff to impress the domestic restaurant audience with his creativity and bravery when it comes to creating and styling dishes.

Deadly tick discovered in Hungary!

tick dangerous deadly disease

A dangerous tick has appeared in Hungary: it may carry a disease with a 30% mortality rate.

List of potential pandemics

Every year, the WHO publishes a report on the potential pandemics. This report currently contains eight items. Penzcentrum.hu talked to Ferenc Jakab, a virologist professor and the head of the National Virological Laboratory of the University of Pécs, regarding the issue.

With this list, the WHO is drawing the attention of the international research community to accelerate research. According to penzcentrum.hu, the professor points out that there are two main types of epidemics:

  • those with relatively mild symptoms that affect many people and
  • those with severe symptoms that affect few people.

The first is more dangerous from the point of view of a pandemic, such as the coronavirus. In the second case, the patient is almost immediately hospitalised and isolated following the diagnosis, at least in the developed world.

Deadly ticks and the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

Among the aforementioned eight items on the list by the WHO is the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, which researchers have studied since the 1960s. It starts with high fever, muscle aches and headaches, and it can cause skin bleeding and capillary vessel dissection in the later stages.

The mortality rate is extremely high: 30%. What is more, the infection is transmitted by tick bites, according to Blikk.hu.

The tick species that spreads this disease has already appeared on the southern borders of Hungary.

The Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever research is also a major focus of the Pécs laboratory: they study ticks, other animals, rodents, and they conduct basic research on the virus, according to penzcentrum.hu.

Tick found in Budapest

According to Dr. István Zoltán Kapiller, veterinarian specialised in tick infestations,

Organised control of this tick species (Hyalomma marginatum) should start as soon as possible at national level. Several specimens have already been found in Budapest, even if no disease has been detected, but it should be noted that this species of tick can only be recognised by a specialist, and even GPs are not very good at distinguishing it from other species,

he told Blikk.hu.

Disease X

Every year, the pandemic list includes a “disease X” caused by a virus that is not yet known but could trigger a major pandemic. The WHO includes disease X on its list to warn the world’s governments to be prepared for this event, just in case. In the end, this became the coronavirus of 2019.

Strange as it may sound, Professor Jakab says we were lucky to have COVID-19 because medical science already had a good understanding of SARS-CoV 1.

Finally, as we can read in Blikk.hu’s article, Ferenc Jakab said that in its laboratory, the University of Pécs conducts research on all known pathogens on the WHO list, in order to prepare for a possible emergency.

Hungary sending 156,000 vaccines to Vietnam

covid vaccine

Hungary is donating 156,000 doses of AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine to Vietnam, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook on Thursday.

Hungary is grateful for the medical equipment it received from Vietnam during the first wave of the pandemic, Szijjártó said. In the spirit of partnership, Hungary freed up and sold 400,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Vietnam before donating another 100,000 doses to the country, the minister noted.

Counting the new shipment, Hungary has sent Vietnam enough Covid jabs to inoculate 656,000 people, he said. In total, Hungary has so far donated close to 5 million vaccine doses to 18 countries, Szijjártó said.

Should we fear a new wave of epidemics due to the Russian-Ukrainian war?

Refugees from Ukraine

So far, only 69 out of 5,000 tests carried out up to mid-March came back positive. This low proportion is quite promising, but should we fear a new wave of epidemics? Here is what the experts say.

According to a volunteer doctor in Beregsurány, COVID-19 is not common among refugees, but colds and stomach problems are more frequent. Basically, all those refugees who arrive with upper respiratory complaints such as sore throat, fever, or cough symptoms are tested for coronavirus – rtl reported. The majority of them are tested negative which is quite promising.

According to the Ministry of Human Resources,

so far 69 out of 5,000 tests carried out up to 9th March came back positive which is less than 1.5%.

However, experts say caution is important, as the Ukrainian health system is less developed than in Hungary. Another important aspect is that there are fewer compulsory vaccinations for children in Ukraine. Thus, many diseases can easily spread to neighboring countries.

The question of a new pandemic wave is divisive among the experts.

According to the Hungarian virologist, Miklós Rusvai there is no realistic chance that a new wave will break out due to the refugee situation. The weather is warming up and they do not pose a greater threat than tourists, he added.

In contrast, pediatrician György Póta, who volunteers at a refugee reception point, said that the low vaccination rate in Ukraine can be a critical point. Therefore, the expert does not completely rule out the possibility of another epidemic wave. He also added that they can give vaccinations against COVID-19, flu and measles to refugee children. These are important initiatives because a fever of 40 degrees that lasts several days can be extremely dangerous for weakened bodies – reported by 24.hu.

In addition to maintaining our physical health, we should also look after our mental health. Soon after the pandemic is over, we have to face a new critical situation around us: the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. But how can we mentally survive all these shocking events? This question is examined in the freshly published book of Hungarian psychotherapists Katalin Zana and Tihamér Bakó – Portfolio reported. The experts reveal how to deal with traumatic events and how to strengthen ourselves. An important point is to understand how certain feelings – fears, anxieties – can be linked to what is happening in the present or even past experiences. We can talk about this with family members and friends. It can often be reassuring to see that others are feeling or thinking about the situation in a similar way. According to the experts, we need to find ways and means within ourselves to shield ourselves against the consequences of the crisis.

Hungarian tourism suffers greatly from the Russian-Ukrainian war

Hévíz Spa Thermal Bath Fürdő Gyógyvíz

Although the Russian-Ukrainian war only began at the end of February, it is already clear that Hungarian tourism will be fundamentally affected by it.

Effects of the sanctions

“The sanctions against Russia and the war events are now severely affecting tourism service providers and different countries,”

Richárd Róbert Kiss, a tourism expert and the editor-in-chief of InfoRadio told Index. After all, Russian tourists with serious spending power have been arriving in greater and greater numbers in the European Union’s major cities over the past ten years.

“Budapest and Hungarian spa towns could already feel the lack of Russian tourists in the spring,”

Russian tourism expert Andrea Szegedi said. She added that travel agencies could also face serious losses if they have to refund the prices of their bookings to Russian tourists.

Hévíz and other places

For instance, tourism in Hévíz is losing a lot because of the war, as RTL Klub, and then Portfolio.hu, reported. Ten thousand guests cancelled their reservations in the last few days. According to Portfolio.hu, the situation has hit tourism in Hévíz particularly hard, as Russian and Ukrainian visitors accounted for a quarter of foreign turnover.

Earlier this week, Portfolio.hu wrote that tourists from Russia and Ukraine have virtually disappeared from Hungary, however, not only from these two countries but also from many others. Many people are afraid to come to Hungary because of the war in the neighbouring country.

“We should not stop at Hévíz, but also Sárvár, Hajdúszoboszló, Miskolc, Harkány, and I could go on listing the cities that have entered the Russian tourism market,”

said Andrea Szegedi. She added that the significantly increased number of Russian tourists is the result of a long and conscious work, which will change in the current situation, as we can read in Index’s article.

Travel agencies

She said that we in Hungary had a very good market position, as we were one of the few European countries that allowed Russian tourists in with minimal or almost no restrictions.

By that, she meant that Russian tourists were not subject to quarantine with proper vaccination and that air traffic between the two countries was restored in a short time.

Travel agencies are already feeling the indirect effects of the war. Bookings have slowed down, but cancellations are still on hold because it would be a huge blow if the travel agencies had to pay that money back. The question is, how long the war, on which the future of many Hungarian travel agencies depends, will last.
