One of the venues of the 17th FINA World Championships belongs to the ice- skater lovers. The ice rink has already become one of the most beloved place in the wintry Budapest.
The situation is going to be the same in the Spring as well. This area is visited mostly by tourists and pedestrians any time of the year, because the monumental statues of the Heroes square, the Vajdahunyad Castle, and nearby the Széchenyi Termal Bath. This list going to be longer, since this is the area, where the synchronised competition will take place, better to say: instead of the artistic lake of the Városliget, mobile pools and spectator stands for thousands of interested spectators will be equipped there. The last international sport event, which was held here, was the long track speed skating European Championship, but this summer we will show something else!
Next to the Russian, Chinese, Canadian and Australian elite, there will be several Hungarian competitors who will need the fans’ support.
For the events of the synchronise swimming competitions in the Városliget, there will be tickets for before and after noon. The prices of the tickets will start at 500 HUF for both parts of the day. On the final day of the tournament, 21st of July, the passes to the evening’s finals will be between 1500 and 3000 HUF.
It is important to know; this phase of the ticket selling is only the first one. There will be more rounds.
Interview with László Cseh: “Phelps is a major inspiration for me”
Press release – There was an additional Hungarian speaker at the FINA Convention’s Panel Talk in Windsor: the FINA invited László Cseh to the traditional closing event with all the participants including the athletes, where he was introduced to the audience as the living legend of the Aquatics.
László Cseh had the chance to talk about his career with an amazing company at the Panel Talk, he shared the podium to answer to all the questions with Janet Evans, the four-time American Olympic champion, Bill May, the very first male World Champion of the Synchronised Swimming, Gary Hunt, the king of the High Diving, Meaghan Benfeito, the new shining star of the Canadian Diving and Aaron Feltham, the Water Polo representative to the FINA Athletes Committee, who player water polo in Eger for many years.
The Hungarian World Champion has stated that he still considers the three silver Olympic medals from Peking as the climax of his career. ‘I consider my silver medals as victories, not lost golds, since it was Michael Phelps, the greatest swimmer of all time/ever lived who finished before me. He is the major inspiration for me now and next year whether he is retired last month. His times represents a level I would like to get above, for example next year at the FINA World Championship in Budapest. It makes me sad not to have him racing in the pool next to us, he will be dearly missed but I think we will have an enough share number of opponents.
Cseh told us also that he was predestined to swim because of his love for water, as a little kid he couldn’t been removed from the bath tub. ‘It was obvious for my family that I should continue this in the pool. When I had stood on the podium in 2002 at the Short Course European Championship with a medal in my hand, I got my first push, the World Championship a year later in Barcelona was a miracle itself, I only wanted to get into the finals but I had the chance again to stand on the podium with another medal in my shaking hands. That was fantastic feeling which makes me swim better and faster to live that experience through again.
About the future of the Aquatics, the four Olympic medal holders shared the idea of having more prestigious competitions, maybe expanding the World Cup series further, for example more events at the first quarter of the year would be optional.
Even though László visited the World Championship venue at the hockey arena and did his trainings, he did not feel the urge to compete. ‘I had 2 months’ rest after the Rio Olympics, I don’t think it is enough time to get into shape to achieve results I would be proud of. These months were entitled to tune in to the trainings since I will work hard from the beginning of the next January because I do have big goals to reach at the World Championship in Budapest.
The World Championship starts on Tuesday with a splendid number of Hungarian participants. Péter Bernek and Richárd Márton will start the event at the semi-final of the 400m freestyle, later Katinka Hosszú and Zsuzsanna Jakabos will race at the 200m freestyle, Tamás Kenderesi and Dávid Verrasztó at the 200m butterfly, Ádám Telegdy and Kristóf Rasovszky at the 100 backstroke, Katinka Hosszú at the 400m medley and 100 bacstroke and finally Dávid Földházi and Márton Barta at the 200m medley. The semifinals will start at 15/30 and the finals will start from Wednesday at 00/30.
Hungarian government about Swimming Association President resignation
The government puts the success of next year’s World Aquatics Championships first and foremost, office chief János Lázár said on Thursday.
On the subject of Swimming Association President Tamás Gyárfás’s recent resignation, Lázár said the government puts the success of next year’s World Aquatics Championships first and foremost.
“Scandals do not help developments and can be detrimental to personal achievements, too,” Lázár said, adding that a new president would have to get involved with the work of sports clubs outside of Budapest whilst overseeing the organisation of the world championships.
Gyárfás resigned on Wednesday, saying it was the best way he could help the sport. Earlier in November, several swimmers including Katinka Hosszú, three-time Rio Olympic champion, and coaches called on Gyárfás to resign and urged reforms in the swimming association.

FINA Budapest2017 – Here are the Championships’ logo
The mascots – two waterlilies – are the work of graphic designer Tibor Tatai.
‘Even basketball players would have been jealous if they saw my jump right after hearing the news about being appointed to design to official World Championships mascots. It is a great honour and responsibility because everyone is interested in this great event in every corner of the world – so, actually, this grand attention is quite new to me. The basic idea of the mascots was the Championships’ logo, the water element – said the young Hungarian artist.
He sought the simplicity and tried to follow the theme of the well-known World Championships logo, while making sure to emphasise water, the largest natural resource of Hungary, together with the flower pattern.
Start of a fairy tale: Lilly and Willy
The designer of the mascots of the 17th FINA World Championships feels like being in another world while working. His daughters were his hardest criticisers during the designing period. Exclusive interview with Tibor Tatai, designer of Lilly and Willy.
He just jotted his first ideas spontaneously, brainstormed around the basic elements of the mascot. The following words were written down: sweet, lovely, kids, fit in hands. He appointed the conception to use the most essential characteristics of the official logo and design elements of the World Championships. This was the basis of all ideas. While using drops, Tibor was trying to interpret the sense of water, emphasizing that the Event is about more than aquatics.
The figure needs to have a message that represents Hungary, too. Our country has a very rich water supply, thermal baths, spas, and popular, beloved lakes. I tried considering the fact that he Hungarian water is world-famous, and I would have liked to show it, while keeping it simple.
The shape of a water lily worked out the best, because it is very simple to connect with water. There is a Hungarian phrase: ‘Who loves flowers, can’t be a bad person.’ The flower is a beloved and positive symbol, being similar to the logo, it seemed the perfect solution. In nature, water lilies are decorations of lakes, can be found in gardens, homes as well in city parks. It is a lovely, simple and nice form.
Thanks to the immense interest surrounding the World Championships, Tibor felt responsibility that can be sometimes terrifying to someone not used to such amount of attention. However, his happiness for the creation is tremendous, he is grateful for having been able to create a mascot representing one of the greatest natural treasures of the country. Especially since the occasion is the greatest event Hungary has ever hosted, the FINA World Championships.

Earlier this month, several swimmers including Katinka Hosszú, three-time Rio Olympic champion, and coaches called on Gyárfás to resign and urged reforms in the swimming association.
The office of the state secretary for sports said the state would not interfere but called for an urgent resolution, also taking into consideration that Hungary will host the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, “the largest ever sports event in Hungary”.

Tourism expert: FINA World Championships is a good opportunity for the Balaton region as well
“Hungary will host one of the biggest sport events of the world next year, and the Lake Balaton will be in the middle of attention as well” – Henrik Hoffman, president of the Balaton Regional Touristic Destination Management (TDM) Association and member of the Hungarian TDM Association said regarding the 2017 FINA World Championships.
Henrik Hoffman stressed that Hungary has organised plenty of successful sport events in recent years, and he is very pleased with the fact that the Hungarian fans will have the chance to watch the World Championships.
“Budapest is a more and more popular touristic destination, but considering its beauty and endowments it would deserve even more. We all know that just a couple of weeks after the World Championships the host city of the 2024 Olympic Games will be announced in Lima, and a successful FINA World Championships could convince the decision makers in favour of the Hungarian capital and also the potential venues around the Balaton” – Hoffman added.
“Since the venue of the open water competitions at the World Championships will be in Balatonfüred, it will be relatively easy to get there thanks to the M7 motorway and the proposed rail developments supported by the government. Just think about that: to get from Budapest to Balatonfüred will be roughly the same as to reach an LA suburb from the city centre.”
[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/tag/fina-budapest2017/” type=”big” newwindow=”yes”] Read more news about FINA – BUDAPEST2017[/button]
Henrik Hoffman would like to draw attention to the collateral market values of such a big event, as the competitions of the FINA World Championships will be watched by 6 and a half billions of people all over the world for two weeks. They will see among others the Parliament Building with the view of the Danube, the Városliget, the Margaret Island, and those experiences could affect the touristic decisions of the following years. The Lake Balaton can also benefit from that: certain tourists, even from overseas , who have already heard about Budapest, but not about the Balaton, can discover the biggest lake of Middle Europe.
“For me it is a special feeling that the Balaton will be a major venue as well. The region has been the scene of open water swimming World and European Cup competitions, as well as the 2014 FINA World Junior Open Water Championships and several major sailing events, and plenty of other big sport events will follow in the upcoming years. The competitors and all those who have already been at the Balaton, always return there with pleasure, because the atmosphere is great, the water is still and warm in summer, and the infrastructure around the lake has improved really well in the last 20-30 years.”
“Thousands of people will be in Balatonfüred during the FINA World Championships and the FINA Masters World Championships, which will be really beneficial for the local economy. The tourism of the region can also boom, so these events have a positive effect in every sense.”

Salamon’s open letter: Let the war of the Hungarian swimming sport end!
According to globoport.hu, Ferenc Salamon, the member of FINA’s masters committee, writes “Enough of this fight!” in his open letter commenting on the argument between Katinka Hosszú and Tamás Gyárfás.
“The Hungarian swimming sport is facing the toughest challenge of all times: Hungary has never organised such an illustrious sport event as the 2017 Aquatics World Championship, no Hungarian swimmer has ever competed in front of home audience at such an event.
There’s no place for harshly becoming personal or degrading frays right now. Still, people outstandingly successful in their own fields, have been engaged in a battle for days, thus, distracting attention and energy from what should be the most important: preparing for the competitions and getting ready for next year’s World Championships.
We are facing a truly unmatched opportunity – we can only succeed if we all try our best in favour of the great, joint goal.
Athletes and trainers, the figures of swimming: let’s put aside our offences and do our jobs. This is everyone’s interest!” writes the member of FINA’s master committee in his open letter.

“He should resign!” – The Katinka Hosszú – Tamás Gyárfás battle continues
According to index.hu, this year’s last big swimming competition, the Short Course World Championships will be held in the Canadian Windsor in the beginning of December. Katinka Hosszú, aka “the Iron Lady”, published a fed-up statement one day before the official announcement regarding the Hungarian team members. The Hungarian Swimming Federation claims to face Katinka’s accusations without understanding it.
Due to the declarations of Tamás Gyárfás, the president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation, the Iron Lady decided that it was time to speak up again. She tore apart the contract offered by the president in January, and now she went even further.
In her Facebook post she emphasized in advance that her preparation is still the most important thing, this is why she hadn’t reacted to the declarations of the president yet, but she decided that she couldn’t remain speechless anymore.
“I stand completely puzzled in front of Tamás Gyárfás’s declarations saying that everything is fine between the two of us. My relationship with the federation hasn’t changed. Tamás Gyárfas was the first to say that I should stop swimming and retire in 2008. If it was up to him, Hungary would’ve returned from Rio with three less gold medals and one less silver medal. I’ve been training on my own, without the help of the federation, since January.”
Katinka states that she was relieved to prepare for Rio without the help of the federation, because she was able to fully concentrate on her preparation, which luckily resulted in great achievements at the Olympic Games.
“Not only did the situation not change compared to last year, it even got worse since 2015. One year has passed, but we’re still right where we started. I frequently had to train in 0° Celsius degrees, in pouring rain and outdoor pools, but I wasn’t the only one. The conditions are still awful, the conditions of a professional preparation are not ensured in the swimming pools and land trainings. Everything is unpredictable due to the reconstructions, we cannot plan ahead. The Komjádi swimming pool in currently under its second renovation in the past one and a half year, which is a nonsense. Despite the renovation, there are still problems, which are also recognised by parents and children. It’s not true that these are the best days of Hungarian swimming. It just turned worse.”
The swimmer finds it unacceptable that the federation shows off with their results and hard work and that they claim that without them Budapest wouldn’t be the home of world competitions. Swimming and swimmers are not important. Everything comes down to interests.
“I find it unacceptable that Tamás refers to swimmers being difficult to deal with when they speak up against the unequivocally unserviceable system that ignores rules. It is outrageous that talented, successful swimmers have to worry about consequences if they speak up. But let me tell you that there are no consequences. The only reason Tamás Gyárfás sits in that chair is because we bring good results and because the majority of swimming clubs are in impossible situations. Votings neglect any type of democratic nature, quarters are decided by open votings by show of hands. So it’s not hard to imagine the number of people who may dare to oppose the system. Clubs have much more at risk at these elections than leading posts. Serious supports, fundings are at risk.”
Katinka states that the federation doesn’t only hold swimmers and clubs at check with its promises and threats. The preserving of thes situation of snakes and ladders is very important for them. The system and the old-fashioned methods simply don’t serve the interest of Hungarian swimming. They try to put across that there’s no life outside the system, and that nothing can work without the interference of the federation. The Iron Lady finds this ridiculous.
“I am the living example that there is life beyond the Hungarian Swimming Federation, in fact, that’s when life really starts.” She goes on with saying that she also has to think about her fellow swimmers and all the enthusiastic children and youngsters. “It is our responsibility to stand up for ourselves and future generation swimmers, because no one else will do this. We can’t let others manipulate us, make decisions concerning us without asking us, let it be about qualifications or anything else.”
She finally comes to the conclusion that, if swimming is actually important to Tamás Gyárfás, and if it is truly is a vocation for him, just like he says, then he should eliminate the most dangerous factor voluntarily. “He should eliminate himself and resign from his office!”
The federation claims that Katinka’s accusations are unfounded. “We find it grotesque that all this happens while there’s peace in the sport and everybody is trying to concentrate on their own job: swimmers swim, trainers hold trainings, and officers are working on sustaining and bettering the background as much as possible.”
They write in their announcement about how this relationship inflamed in last Ocotober, when Katinka Hosszú asked millions of forints for her appearance in the promotion film of the 2017 Aquatics World Championships. They remind us that they did everything for the Olympic champion: they helped her to find a sponsor when she returned from the USA and Tamás Gyárfás helped her with her Vasas contract. They also recall her request for a video analysing system, which they got hold of in vain.
“Encouraged by the Hungarian Olympic Committee, and despite the constant, discreditable criticism, the Hungarian Swimming Federation took a step back and avoided conflicts with the athlete-trainer couple in favour of the successes. The correctness of this decision was attested by the Rio successes. Tamás Gyárfás went on by praising Katinka’s performance in several interviews and emphasized that he was open to reconciliation. Other officers of the federation had a similar approach towards Katinka. András Hargitay invited Shane Tusup to the leading corporation of the trainers’ committee – he was left without answer.”
According to the federation, clubs get financial support based on ranking, which is made up by competition results, not interests. They also touch upon Shane Tusup. “It’s the gift of fate that Katinka Hosszú met Shane Tusup, with whom she achieved amazing successes in the last four years. However, besides the rightful acknowledgement of his achievements, more and more internationally acknowledged officers, organisers complain about his behaviour. The root of the conflicts is usually of financial origin. It’s a fact that professionalism has a place in the sport world, but Shane Tusup’s behaviour, style is becoming hardly acceptable for many.”
Meanwhile, other outstanding Hungarian swimmers, like Dániel Gyurta, Boglárka Kapás, Péter Bernek, Dominik Kozma and the Verrasztó siblings, stood up for Katinka, as they see her letter making sense.

One of the main themes of the 17th FINA World Championships is to make up for lost promises to the public -besides the spectacular sporting event! The Császár- Komjádi pool, as one of the alma maters of Hungarian aquatics, is already showing developments because renovation of the pool deck had started on November 8. The outdoor pools welcome the public until May 1, 2017 before closing for the final touches for the Worlds.
Our Media Team has asked Nemzeti Sportközpontok (National Sportcentre) for some interesting i details on the renovation and reconstruction of this iconic temple of aquatics.
Besides renewing the pools and water supply, the air conditioning and ventilation system, the front and entrance of the complex and the roof will be renovated, as well. FINA – Budapest2017 – The organisers’s goal is to beat the Masters WCH’s participation record
There is a huge interest in next year’s FINA Masters World Championships, which will be held just after the FINA World Champs in Hungary next summer –operational director Márta Mohácsi said.
The organisers expect around 15-20.000 guests for the event to Budapest and Balatonfüred, and their goal is to beat the record of the 2012 Masters WCH in Roccione, when 12.671 athletes took part in the competitions.
„I experienced in the European Aquatics Championships in London and in the Masters EC in Rijeka that people are really interested in the 2017 FINA Masters WCH, because the event will be held in nice and accessible venues. The organisation is on its way, we have regular consultations with the FINA” – Mohácsi added.
The swimming and diving competitions will be held in the new Dagály complex, the water polo matches in the Hajós-Széchy Pool, the synchronised swimming events in the Városliget, and the open water swimming races in Balatonfüred, like during the FINA World Champs. The final programme of the Masters WCH will be announced by FINA soon.
„Our goal is that all the guests who are coming to the Masters World Champs will have good memories of the event, so we will organise cultural and entertainment programs as well” – said the operational director.
Open water swimming capital city 2017, Balatonfüred debuts – VIDEO

Here’s how much the 2017 World Aquatics Championships will cost Hungary
There are many rumors in the media about the actual costs of the 2017 World Aquatics Championships, but atlatszo.hu calculated how much money the government will really spend, based on government decisions and the amount of money that was separated from the budget each year.
Based on the findings, atlatszo.hu estimates that the Championships will cost Hungary at least 89.843 billion HUF. The majority, 52 billion HUF will be spent this year, but an additional 25 billion HUF will be needed in 2017. Exact numbers can only be revealed after the Championships have already ended, and there are additional costs, like the construction of buildings, stadiums etc. which are although included, but would have been built regardless of the Championships.
The first official report estimated that the Championships will only cost 8 billion HUF, but it has soon escalated. Hungary won the rights to host the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in 2013 and it was supposed to be held in 2021, but after Guadalajara, Mexico dropped out, Hungary was chosen as the host of the 2017 Championships.
The estimated 89.843 billion HUF so far includes the building and reconstruction of all the swimming pools and complexes, the reconstruction of several buildings on Margaret Island and the Pest-side quay, and the costs of the events.
The government has spent 1.4 billion HUF in 2013, 1.585 billion HUF in 2014, and 6.979 billion HUF in 2015, so far; it’s estimated to spend 52.201 billion HUF in 2016, 25.748 billion HUF in 2017, and 1.93 billion HUF in 2018.
The complete list of expenses includes the renovation of the Dagály Swimming Complex (47.208 billion HUF), the developing of Budapest’s infrastructure (13.908 billion HUF), the costs of organization (10 billion HUF), the reconstruction of different swimming pools (8.203 billion HUF), the Dagály bath (4.831 billion HUF), developing the infrastructure of Balatonfüred (2.659 billion HUF), copyright fees paid to FINA (International Swimming Federation) (1.933 billion HUF), the construction of a ferry terminal (0.799 billion HUF), and the preparation of the World Championships (0.3 billion HUF).
The final estimation of atlatszo.hu is then 89.843 billion HUF, but additional costs may arise later. Also, the income this event generates can also reduce expenses. Again, the final numbers can only be told after the event has ended, because the organizer receives 100% of the sold tickets, and Budapest will also host the Masters World Championships after the two-week long World Aquatics Championships, which is estimated to have 10-14,000 viewers and high-entry fees; also, visitors and tourists will need accommodation, which will generate income for Budapest. Sponsors (the Championships’ first main national sponsor is Magyar Telekom) can also reduce expenses.

This is how the facade of the Budapest World Aquatics Championships 2017 will look like
Nemzetisport.hu writes that Hungarian Telekom (Magyar Telekom) will be the main sponsor of the World Aquatics Championships held next year. The declaration of intent was signed on Monday by Miklós Sleszták Minister of National Development, the president of the organisational committee and Christopher Mattheisen, President of the Hungarian Telekom. The facade designed by the Krea Contemporary Art School was presented at the event; however, there is deep silence regarding the old plans.
“This World Championships won’t only be the competition of swimmers, water polo players and divers, but also the competition of Hungarian engineers and executors. This is a chance to show the knowledge, which could lead to the success of the 2024 Olympic Games bid” said Miklós Seszták at the event, who also quoted Dénes Kemény, the president of the Hungarian Water Polo Federation.
“The edge of the goalpost is always just, because the shot of the one, who’s been working harder for the victory, goes in.”
The facade of the World Championships, which was designed by Ferenc Hetsch student of the Krea Contemporary Art School, was also presented at the event. The young graphic told that he used water and the motives and colours of the Hungarian folk art as inspiration, while designing. Then he presented the logo, the icons of the sports and locations, and the graphic design of certain products.
Mária Nemes, the headmaster of the Art Schools said that Ferenc Hetsch will be helped by a professional opportunity of higher education.
“We are proud of this facade; the aim of the organisational committee was a modern facade which could also enter us in the Olympic Games. And I think that this is perfect for this aim” said Miklós Seszták.

According to the two-year-long sponsorship agreement the Hungarian Telekom will be the main sponsor of the Masters World Championships as well as the World Aquatics Championships held in Budapest and Balatonfüred in 2017.
“It’s a great honour to be the main sponsor of a World Championships that includes six branches of sport. We wish the best of luck to all Hungarian competitors and their trainers” said Christopher Mattheisen.

Budapest tops out main venue for 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships – Photos
Budapest (MTI) – General contractor Market Zrt has topped out the Dagály Aquatic Centre, the main venue for the 2017 FINA World Aquatics Championships, six weeks ahead of schedule, government commissioner for priority investments in the capital Balázs Fürjes said on Friday.
The championships were originally planned to be held in Guadalajara, in Mexico, but the city pulled out a year ago for financial reasons, Furjes noted. FINA picked Hungary to host the event shortly afterward, leaving the country just two years to prepare, about half the usual time, he said.
“We’re running the marathon as a sprint, because we have no other choice,” he added.
About 5,000 people are working on the construction.
Hosting the championships is expected to cost Hungary 49 billion forints (EUR 158m), though the budget is seen recovering about 10 billion forints in the form of VAT, Fürjes said earlier.

Divers to have a new pool for the 2017 World Aquatics Championships
It is finally decided that divers will perform their jumps right opposite to the Parliament during the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. Also, Budapest and the government divided the costs of the pool and the surrounding infrastructure, writes hvg.hu.
The government is going to pay for the construction of different institutions, therefore the Hungarian National Asset Management Inc. (MNV) finances the location of the championship, the Dagály Swimming Complex and its renovation. MNV also covers the costs of the huge diving tower which will be located on Bem Quay near Batthyányi Square, and several other works such as the parking lots and the changing of different pipes.
The renovation of the Császár-Komjádi Sports Swimming Pool, the Alfréd Hajós National Swimming Stadium, and the Tamás Széchy Swimming Complex is financed by the National Sport Centres (MNSK), while Budapest covers the costs of pedestrian-and bicycle paths which run along the Danube in District V and XIII, the construction of a footbridge over the Rákos Brook, and the costs of the access control system at the Centre of the Margaret Island. MNSK also finances the full renovation of the Island (except for the sports facilities), and the construction of a ferry pier.
