Breaking – new COVID rules in Hungary, third jabs available from Aug 1

Hungary coronavirus new rules

The government is making a third round of vaccines available from August 1 — to be administered four months after the second — and vaccination will be made mandatory for health-care workers, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió on Friday, citing the spread of the Delta variant.

Due to the Delta variant, people who are not vaccinated yet are in greater danger than ever before, Orbán warned. Elderly citizens who have so far not accepted the vaccine will receive personal visits to convince them to accept the jab, he said.

Also, children over the age of 12 will have the opportunity to receive the coronavirus vaccine on the first two days of the academic year (Sept 1 and 2), Orbán said.

Some 13-14 percent of 12-15-year-olds have already received the vaccine,

he added, with a vaccination rate among 16-18-year-olds of around 45 percent.

The prime minister said Hungary remains one of the safest countries in Europe in terms of herd immunity, with the number of fully inoculated citizens exceeding that in Germany or the United Kingdom.

Orbán advised Hungarians to travel abroad only if they are fully inoculated.

“During a crisis, all opinions expressed that create uncertainty are problematic, and everything that weakens joint action supporting the community is harmful,” Orbán said. That is especially true during a pandemic when human lives are at stake, he said.

The “true danger”, he said, was politicians advising the public on tests and vaccines,

he said. Commenting on Hungary’s child protection law, he said sex education was a matter for parents and this, he added, was “confirmed by European documents”. Children can participate in sex education with the agreement of the parent, but no one except the teacher and people approved by the principal can do so, he noted.

“We feel they want to take our children away from us,”

Orbán said. He noted that he had not been invited to the debate in the European Parliament as was his wont when the situation was “crucial”. Orbán said the issue wasn’t just a Hungarian one, referring to a similar situation in Italy, Romania and Lithuania. If Lithuania has managed to protect its interests, then Hungary will succeed, too, he said.

Noting UEFA’s sanctions against Hungarian football, Orban said

“double standards” had become prevalent in Europe.

He said linking EU funds to a legal dispute was “unacceptable” because EU monies were not donations but something Hungarians had worked hard for and had a right to.

Hungary’s recovery programmes, he said, would be launched from the budget even if EU money is unavailable. The language and framework of the debate may appear a legal matter, but the actual matter itself was political, he said, adding that children were “held sacred” in Hungary. “We can’t let sexual propagandists into our schools.”

Orbán accused Brussels of abusing its power and “forcing on us what we don’t want”. “Our children and their upbringing is all about their freedom,” he said. Orbán called the European Commission’s standpoint on the matter

“shameful” and he accused it of “legal hooliganism”.

Both family law and education, he added, were national competences, and Brussels had nothing to do with them. He appealed to Hungarians who “consider the government’s ability to protect the interests of parents as essential” to fill in the National Consultation survey.

Patients endure the long waiting list with painkillers in Hungarian hospitals

hungary hospital

According to research conducted by the Chief Physician of the National Spinal Medicine Centre, the condition of patients has deteriorated. Due to the situation caused by the coronavirus, 1,400 patients are waiting for spinal intervention.

Ferenc Mária, the chief physician of the National Spinal Medicine Centre, conducted research on the condition of patients. The result was frustrating, with patients reporting deteriorating conditions, pain, and difficult living circumstances.

1,300-1,400 patients are waiting for surgery.

Hundreds of them signed up for surgery during the epidemic period. In eighty-five per cent of those surveyed, their condition worsened since they were scheduled for surgery. The majority of respondents reported that it was an increasing problem for patients to complete their daily tasks. The huge problem is that patients did not receive treatments due to the epidemic. Pain-relieving, quality-of-life-enhancing treatments, physiotherapy, or other treatments are of great help in both the mental and physical condition of patients.

Patients were taking painkiller medicines on a daily basis.

Due to the pain, the patients struggled with sleeping disorders, as a result of which they could not do the daytime work properly. Chief physician Péter Pál Varga stated that the assessment and examination of the patients had already begun. Based on this, an order is set up for the patients, writes portfolio.hu. The problem is that many doctors are on holiday due to the rest of the extra load after coronavirus. It is estimated that they will be able to perform 10-15 interventions per day.

There are health care system problems not only in the Hungarian capital but also in Zalaegerszeg. Seven traumatologists of St. Rafael Hospital in Zala County have resigned due to low salaries, writes blikk.hu.

Consequently, emergency care was discontinued at the Zalaegerszeg hospital.

Patients in need of more extreme care and those waiting for surgery are transported to Nagykanizsa and Kaposvár. The hospital’s director general officially signalled the problem on the 8th of July.

“Since the doctors working in the traumatology department did not let go of their demands, so we closed the negotiations, we consider the dismissal of traumatologists who do not want to cooperate with the institution final. The management of St. Raphael Hospital in Zala County has indicated to the competent authorities the need to reorganise continuous care in order to ensure the security of care,” can be read in the official announcement.

Unvaccinated millions to cause 4th wave? + Hungary is ready to give a third dose

Hungary vaccine border

Given the large number of unvaccinated people still in Hungary, a fourth wave of the epidemic could be well on its way, virologist Ferenc Jakab told the daily Magyar Nemzet.

Vaccinations are the only path to lessening the risk of a further wave, the professor who heads Hungary’s coronavirus research task force told the paper’s Saturday edition. The Delta variant, he added, would be the cause of the next wave, which is

likely to be stronger than the first, though lighter than the third,

and will reach Hungary before the autumn.

“With a bit of luck, we’ll still get away with August,” he said. “There’s a clear cause for concern,” he said. The number of infections has begun to rise even in countries such as Israel where the vaccination rate is relatively high.

He noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO) predicted a fourth wave in Europe on the back of the Delta variant. Jakab said

no one should be under the illusion that the epidemic is over.

“The most we have for the time being is a little breather.”

As we reported before, those elderly who received the Sinopharm vaccine in Hungary complain that they do not have the protection needed against the virus. Therefore, they try to get Pfizer in Romania where everybody can have it if they have an EU ID card, without registration. On July 8, Magyar Hang said that, according to the Romanian operative body, 715 Hungarian citizens received Pfizer vaccines,

but the Hungarian government denied that such “vaccine tourism” existed.

Yesterday, the Hungarian coronavirus information centre told ATV that Hungary is ready to administer a third dose if that is the unanimous advice of international and Hungarian professionals. That is because Mikael Dolstein, the scientific leader of Pfizer, said that

a third dose could raise the level of protection against the Delta variant,

so they already started negotiations with the medical authorities of the USA.

In Moscow, a new inoculation campaign already started, and UK PM Boris Johnson also said that there would be a new vaccination campaign in the United Kingdom starting in autumn. During that, British citizens at risk will get a booster dose.

16 months, 30,000 deaths: The sad reality of the virus in Hungary

Five patients died over the past 24 hours, while 55 new Covid infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Thursday. With this, the number of Hungarian victims exceeded 30,000.

It is not possible to get away from such a global trauma without loss, but things could have turned out better. Within Europe, relative to the population, the most fatalities have been registered in Hungary. Maybe the negative “record” that Hungary holds could have been avoided. There are more than 3,000 Hungarian victims of the epidemic per million people; only the Czech Republic and Bulgaria are approaching this rate somewhat. Only in Slovakia, Belgium, Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia did the number of fatalities cross the 2,000 line.

444 writes that rich countries also suffered, with deaths rising in Germany or the Netherlands during the autumn-winter wave, but nowhere as steep as in Hungary.

covid deaths data
Source: Our World in data

According to Telex, it would be more accurate to phrase the statistics this way: since March last year, 30,000 fatalities have been registered of those who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

It is extremely difficult to determine how many of the 30,000 fatalities (corresponding to the population of Kiskunfélegyháza) were direct deaths from Covid-19.

In many cases in the second and third waves of the epidemic, it was clear that death was caused by pneumonia, severe respiratory failure, or multiorgan inflammation due to the coronavirus infection. In other cases, it was more characteristic that the organs of often elderly patients, already weakened by various chronic diseases, tumours, and cardiovascular diseases, could no longer cope with the virus. In this case, it is more difficult to determine the primary cause of death – some of these patients would have died even from an influenza pandemic.

We are probably looking for a single explanation in vain. From epidemiological constraints through the quality of healthcare and human health to the elderly care system, a lot goes into where and how many victims the virus takes. All this may have contributed to the epidemic in Hungary, but opinions differ on the extent to which these factors affected the outcome.

The daily statistics

So far, 5,523,878 people have received the first jab, while 5,126,330 have been fully vaccinated.

Where do I have to still wear a face mask in Hungary from today?

Budapest party tram nr 4-6

As we reported before, the number of people inoculated against the coronavirus reached 5.5 million yesterday in Hungary, which allowedthe further easing of restrictions. Based on the statistics, no one with Covid-19 has died on Thursday and only 76 of those suffering from Covid-19 were hospitalised without respiratory assistance, and 22 were on ventilators yesterday morning.

Therefore all restrictions on shops were lifted and masks are no longer mandatory indoors or outdoors. Furthermore, mask-wearing on public transport are also no longer mandatory, though the rule

remains in force in social care settings and hospitals.

Shops, hotels, leisure facilities and cultural events can be entered with a pre-booked seat without an immunity certificate. One hundred people are allowed to attend private events, up from 50, and the limit for weddings will go up from 200 to 400 people.

However,

restrictions will still apply in the case of sporting, music and dance events,

as well as concerts held indoors. PM Viktor Orbán said on concerns about the worldwide spread of the delta variant that Hungary was fully prepared for a possible fourth wave of the epidemic.

On the subject of the possibility of third booster shots, PM Orbán said yesterday that experts would assess whether a third vaccine could be administered, and he appealed to the public for patience.

Breaking – foreign citizens not having TAJ number can register from today!

Hungary vaccination foreign citizens

Not only they, but Hungarian citizens living abroad and not having a health insurance (TAJ) number can also register in the EESZT (Electronic Health Services Area) to get a vaccine in Hungary.

According to koronavirus.gov.hu, the Hungarian vaccination program reached a new cornerstone. Since 55 pc of the Hungarian population and 92 pc of those who registered received at least their first jab, the government decided to allow the vaccination of foreign citizens living in Hungary and Hungarian citizens living abroad even if they do not have a TAJ number.

These two groups can register from May on the www.vakcinainfo.gov.hu website. For the foreign individuals, there is

an English website, while the appointment reservation system of the EESZT opened for them today.

According to koronavirus.gov.hu, those who registered will receive an email that will include the link to the English language version of the appointment reservation program and an identification code (PID) generated by the EESZT system.

To book an appointment, you have to enter the website using the ID number you gave during your registration and the PID number you will receive in the email. You will be able to go to hospital vaccination centres. Furthermore,

you can choose from Sinopharm, Pfizer, and Sputnik V jabs.

It is crucial to bring your statement of consent (hozzájáruló nyilatkozat), which can be downloaded from HERE in Hungarian and from HERE in English.

Of course, if foreigners get inoculated in Hungary, they will receive a Hungarian immunity certificate with which they can travel to many countries. Read more about your travel options with a Hungarian immunity certificate below:

Govt official marks Hungarian District Nurse Day, by thanking their hard work

Nurse Care District Nurse Védőnő

Human Resources Minister Miklós Kásler and Zsolt Nyitrai, the prime minister’s commissioner for key welfare issues, greeted Hungary’s district nurses in a video released on Saturday, on the occasion of District Nurses Day.

In the video, Nyitrai thanked some 5,000 Hungarian staff members in the sector for their contribution to efforts against the coronavirus pandemic, with special regard to their services during the vaccination drive.

Kásler said that district nurses had “a special place in healthcare by virtue of their helpfulness, compassion, and high professional skills”.

“As you have done everything for Hungarian children and families, so the Hungarian government will do everything for you,” the minister said.

Hungary has hoarded a large number of vaccines – what now?

In the Video, Orsolya Lőrinczi has talked about the profession of district nurses and has said that it has been around for 106 years and that it is a profession honoured like a hungarikum.

Also, the qualification and education of Hungarian district nurses are quite high and they have a wide range of tasks. They are also almost entirely unique to Hungary with a few exceptions, like Finland.

District nurses not only help children and pregnant women, but they are caring for the entire family. Some are assigned to schools and are there to give first aid, conduct screenings and also help with sexual education.

“This profession can only be pursued with dedication,” – Orsolya Lőrinczi added.

Here is the first country which made the vaccine mandatory for everybody!

coronavirus vaccine youth

The Pakistani National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) announced on Wednesday that they make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for all public and private sector employees.

Even though the spread of the virus is declining in the Asian country and the NCOC decided to ease some of the restrictions the local governmnet thinks this is the only way to put an end to the epidemic. In Pakistan, the 10 millionth vaccine dose was administered on Wednesday and the government plans to inoculate all the 70 million citizens by the end of the year – dawn.com wrote.

Meanwhile, in Hungary, eight patients, generally elderly with co-morbidities, died over the past 24 hours, while 199 new infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Friday. So far 5,324,996 people have received a first jab, while 4,157,681 have been fully vaccinated.

The number of active infections has declined to 52,272, while hospitals are treating 442 Covid patients, 51 of whom need respiratory assistance. There are 6,182 people in official quarantine, while 5,962,887 tests have been officially carried out.

Since the first outbreak, 806,790 infections have been registered, while fatalities have risen to 29,904. Fully 724,614 people have made a recovery.

PM Orbán: Those who miss second jab to be stripped of immunity certificate

orbán government info

Hungarians who miss their second Covid-19 vaccine dose will have their immunity certificates revoked, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told a press briefing on Thursday.

The 137,000 people who have failed to return for the second jab will have their immunity certificate deleted from the official register, losing the privileges that come with it, the prime minister said.

On another subject, Orbán said Hungary will transition from mass vaccinations to “standby” vaccinations from next week.

He also said Hungary was “one month to a month-and-a-half ahead” of other European Union countries in reopening its economy.

Hungary to vaccinate 12-16-year-olds

Hungary’s government has approved the vaccination of 12-16-year-olds against Covid-19.

The government will not organise a vaccination drive for this age group, the prime minister said, adding that

it will be up to parents to decide whether they want their children to be inoculated.

Parents who want their children to get the shot will have to register as they would for their own vaccination, and the jabs will be administered at vaccination points, Orbán said.

Hungary has more vaccines than applicants for inoculation

Hungary is the only European Union member state that has more Covid-19 jabs available than people registering to get inoculated.

As long as there is a shortage of vaccines, it is the state’s responsibility to put an end to it. However, if there are more jabs than applicants for inoculation, it is the responsibility of individuals to register for inoculation, Orban told a press briefing.

The prime minister asked all to grasp the opportunity as the epidemic would only be over for those who have got themselves inoculated.

Hungary has overcome the third wave of the pandemic, with an accelerating rate of decline in the number of new infections and a low level of positive tests, he said.

In terms of the inoculation rate, Hungary fares excellently, holding second place in terms of the first jab and the first place in terms of the second jab, Orbán said.

Government preparing for period of pandemics, mass migration

Hungary’s government is preparing for a period of pandemics and mass migration.

From now on, the government will shift its focus from Covid-19 response to restarting the economy, he told a press briefing.

The prime minister announced that two operative boards would soon be established. The one to coordinate economic recovery would be led by Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, and the other one to support the recovery of social life by Minister for Family Affairs Katalin Novák, he said.

Over the past 15 years Europe has been shaken by three crises: the financial crisis of 2008-2009, the ongoing migration wave and the coronavirus pandemic, Orbán said.

Drawing the conclusions, the government is going to reshape the economy and prepare for a period of pandemics and mass migration, he said.

What Hungary needs is an economy that provides balance, stability and safety for its population not only in times of peace but amidst pandemics and migration, too, Orban said.

Nurse leaves Hungary due to fatigue – She is now more free in Germany

vaccine nurse

Csilla now works in a hospital’s intensive care nursery in Germany after leaving the Hungarian health care system behind.

At the beginning of this year, Daily News Hungary reported on several occasions on a newly implemented system offering new contracts to health care workers. The new system and the new regulations related to it caused severe turbulences in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

Here are the details of the decree and what changes it means in the everyday life of health care professionals.

The decision made many health care workers question their future plans in Hungary as a professional. As a consequence, in March, several thousands of them decided to quit their job; moreover, many of them even took another step and left the country right away for the possibility to pursue the career they had chosen.

A Hungarian nurse, Csilla, talked to Szeretlek Magyarország about her new life and experience since moving to Germany and working as a nurse in the premature intensive unit of a hospital upon refusing to sign the new contract she was practically forced to accept.

Csilla has a university qualification; she had worked for over 23 years in the Hungarian health care system.

She left the country a little over two months ago.
Unlike many, who did not have a chance and either signed the new contract or left the profession itself, Csilla continues doing what she loves.

Changing, however, was not easy. Partly for having been worked in the Hungarian system, especially during the worst times of the pandemic, which was incredibly challenging mentally, and partly because of the distance there is right now between her and her family. Furthermore, she left her country behind without a solid knowledge of the language.

She says she collapsed mentally when she decided not to sign the contract; she even suffered from post-traumatic stress.

She was unable to organise herself. She just had the urge no to do anything and stare at the ceiling so she would not have to interact with anyone, including her own family.

“It was a month during which I lost control; it was not irreversible, but I felt exhausted and negative. It was a good thing I did not start immediately at another place. It would have gnawed me.”

Meanwhile, she had to start working on her German. She applied through an intermediary company that helped her not only with her language skills but also with her housing. She continues going to German classes several times a week.

Even though she works in the same unit she did in Hungary, she says the job is entirely different in every aspect. Of course, there is a lot of work in Germany, as well, apart from a lot of expectations, still

the way people are treated is much different.

“For example, in the beginning, I lived far from the hospital. It was one and a half hours of commute, so I did not have to go to work at 6 am but for 9 am. They also change the schedule in a heartbeat if I need to go to a language class or I need to move from my apartment.”

She says, in Hungary, people are even afraid of being sick since no one could cover their shift. In Germany, they can always solve these issues.

They are working in a well-organised and precise system where she has not yet seen people losing their head.

Another considerable difference between the health care systems of the two countries is the concept of “there is no”.

She still has to get used to the situation where she opens the cabinet and has everything she needs to treat patients.

Even though the equipment she worked with in Hungary is all very professional, nice and modern, let it be a ventilator or a simple bed, there was always something missing, like nappies. In Germany, they are all at their disposal.

She is much better financially as well. Back in Hungary, she only used to work the evening shifts, with which she earned about 420 thousand forints net (around 1160 euros), including overtime payment, after 23 years of experience. During the day she had very little time to sleep, apart from caring for her two kids. Now, she earns around 2000 euros, but with very different conditions, working in three shifts of only 8 hours, as a nursing assistant, since she does not have her B2 language exam yet.

Even though she had to leave her two kids behind for a while, she says she still has more time for them to talk than she did in Hungary, despite only being able to do it online. She can pay much more attention to them as she is less tired and mentally stressed, which took away almost all her attention and kindness and left practically nothing for her own children.

Her priority right now is to solve the situation with her family so they can be together again. Her husband is already working on his language skills to follow her with their children, either to Germany or to move together to Austria.

Since Hungary has reached five million inoculated, most of the coronavirus restrictions were lifted:

  • The curfew is over, you can be on the streets anytime
  • Opening hours of stores and restaurants are no longer restricted
  • Ban on outdoor individual and team sports is lifted
  • Up to 50 people can attend private and family events
  • Up to 200 people can attend weddings

Furthermore, cultural events, such as dance and music events, sports events and other larger than 500 person events can still only be visited by people with immunity certificates or by underaged children supervised by such person. Outdoor events under 500 guests can be visited by anyone.

However, basic protection measures are still in effect, so the use of the mask is still mandatory in all places where protected and unprotected can meet indoors, so it is mandatory to use the mask on public transport and when shopping in stores.
