wizz air

Wizz Air, the fastest growing airline in Europe and the leading low cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe has been awarded highest 7-star safety ranking from the world’s only one-stop airline safety and product rating agency AirlineRatings.com.

Evaluation criteria are focusing on such important elements as IOSA certification, FAA endorsement, condition and age of the fleet, accident history, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety rating of the country of origin, and other parameters. Hungarian Semmelweis University among the world’s best 500!

semmelweis university Hungary

Altogether seven Hungarian universities made it to the world’s best 1000 on the list of the Times Higher Education (THE), as Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu writes.

Among the seven universities that got onto the Times Higher Education’s list, Semmelweis University was the only one that made it to the best 500. Its final place is in the 401-500 category, similarly to last year. However, the university managed to improve in the sub-categories.

Last year, we wrote about the list of the British organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), when eight Hungarian universities made it to the list, the University of Szeged receiving the highest ranking.

There are 1250 universities on the list that are ranked in terms of 5 criteria: the educational environment, research, number of citations, industrial income and international orientation. According to the list, the Semmelweis University performed best in the latter category: international orientation.

Other Hungarian universities such as Eötvös Loránd University, the University of Pécs and the University of Szeged ranked in the categories between the 601-800th places. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the University of Debrecen were ranked in 801-1000th places on the list, while the Corvinus University of Budapest got into the 1001+ category.

The world’s best three universities were chosen to be the University of Oxford, Cambridge and Stanford.

We have already shared several articles about the best universities in Hungary and a series about the specific universities as well. Naturally, numerous Hungarian students go abroad to study and to work there afterwards but a lot of foreigners come to study in Budapest, too.

According to statistics, every eighth university student in Hungary comes from abroad.

However, there are some problems in higher education concerning the fact that most of the students have to work to make their living and be able to study. As the result of a survey found, 60% of Hungarian university students work just to get by: pay the rent, pay the bills and buy food. Every second participant said that they would not be able to attend university if they did not work at the same time.

Budapest is the 32nd most visited city!

Budapest

According to Mastercard’s survey, the Hungarian capital has better results on the list of most popular touristic destinations, compared to last year – reports hvg.hu.

There are a number of huge and must-visit destinations on the Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index, which usually prepares rankings every year. Last year, Budapest was the 6th best city among those with a quickly growing tourist industry.

This year, the city has stepped forward 7 places on the list, making it to 32nd place.

According to the survey, about 6 million foreigners visited Budapest in 2017, spending 5 days here on average. The tourists spent almost 3 billion dollars altogether in the city, contributing to the growth.

www.facebook.com/leorooftopbudapest

The first three places are taken by Bangkok with 20 million foreign visitors, London with a bit less than 20 million tourists, and Paris, where around 17,5 million visitors set their foot.

Dubai, Singapore, New York, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Istanbul and Seoul occupy the rankings from 4th to 10th places.

We have already written about the huge increase in the number of people choosing Budapest as their destination. Besides the natural charm and attraction of the city, the reasons for this might be the growing number of direct flights and the new communication and marketing campaigns.  We make it into more and more recommendations: this summer, CNN wrote about Budapest and its 9 hidden places that are worth visiting.

If you decide to come to the marvellous capital, we encourage you to try the urban walking tours in the city, as well as its hidden treasures, and of course the must-see area of the Hungarian Parliament.

As we have reported in the summer, Budapest is not the only place in the country that was visited by a flow of tourists. According to the chairman of the Touristic Association of Balaton (Balatoni Turizmus Szövetség), there were so many people visiting Lake Balaton in the summer that it was almost impossible to find lodgings.

Hungary the country with one of the fastest internet connections

internet speed interactive map

Out of 200 countries, Hungary has one of the fastest internet connections. We are ninth on the list, reports index.hu.

The Cable surveyed 200 countries. They did 163 million speed tests with the help of Google, Princeton University and the M-Lab. It took 12 months to gather all the data, but the findings were rather interesting.

[button link=”#https://dailynewshungary.com/hungary-worlds-third-fastest-mobile-internet/” type=”big” newwindow=”yes”] HUNGARY HAS WORLD’S THIRD FASTEST MOBILE INTERNET [/button]

They looked at the countries’ last rankings, the mean average download speed and how long it would take to download a 5GB HD movie using average speed. From this, they found out that the internet in Hungary is even faster than it was last year. We moved up 6 places compared to last year. In Hungary, it only takes about 20 minutes to download a 5GB movie.

The country with the fastest internet access is Singapore since they rely heavily on digital infrastructure. The next three are all Scandinavian countries: Sweden, Denmark and Norway. In Sweden, for example, 60% of the population has access to speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Europe has the world’s highest concentration of countries with fast or very fast broadband. Out of the 53 countries measured in Europe all but one (Armenia) fall in the top 100 fastest.

The average speed of the world is 9.10 Mbps, which is 23% higher than last year’s speed. This increase in average speed is due to the countries with previously high speeds that got even faster. The first 100 countries got faster by 5.43 Mbps, while the last 100 on the list increased their speed by only 0.41 Mbps.

[button link=”#https://dailynewshungary.com/hungary-one-top-ranking-countries-happiness-index-internet-freedom/” type=”big” newwindow=”yes”] HUNGARY IS ONE OF THE TOP RANKING COUNTRIES FOR BOTH HAPPINESS INDEX AND INTERNET FREEDOM [/button]

Although 36 of the first 50 countries are European, it is interesting to note that the UK just fell back from the 31st place to the 35th. And it is likely that they will slip more positions in the coming years, while the countries ahead of them will just increase their lead.

Other interesting places on the list:

Romania: 5th place

Russia: 47th place

Nigeria: 152nd place.

budapest parliament duna

The American website World Chacha, specialised in the compilation of travel top lists, has chosen Budapest as the second most beautiful city in the world, ahead of Rome, Florence or even Paris, reports novekedes.hu.

The praise that Budapest receives worldwide seems never to end. In November, the Gellért Bath was declared to be one of the most enchanting Art Deco baths in the world by BBC. Furthermore, Metro Line 4’s Szent Gellért Square station was chosen among the most beautiful metro stations in the world, and the Chain Bridge received high appraisal too. Meanwhile, the Buda Castle has made it to National Geographic’s top 10 castles in Europe. Just to name a few from 2017.

World Chacha recommends Budapest for its unique artistically tasteful architecture and for the matchless gastronomy scene. What should you visit in Budapest in the American site’s opinion? Well, the Four Seasons Gresham Palace and the Postal Savings Bank, apart from the most popular places like the Parliament or Andrássy street.

Thermal baths with healing powers and classy décor are also given a shout-out, along with the ruin bars, which cannot be left out from the context.

World Chacha mentions the view that the higher points of the city provide, making sure to draw attention to the fact that you can see almost to the end of Budapest, as the buildings are not allowed to be taller than 96 metres. The commentary ends with the most heart-warming sentence a tourist can come across:

“the best thing about this city is that most of its sights are accessed free of charge”

7 Hungarian universities among the best

pécs university pte btk

According to szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu, seven Hungarian universities got a place on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 list. The list compared the higher education institutes of 50 countries.

Hungary’s place on the list

Semmelweis University, the university for students of dentistry, medicine and pharmacy, scored 61st place which is 4 places better than last year. The University of Pécs was chosen as the best Hungarian university of the countryside and ranked 127th on the list.

The University of Pécs is proud to accept its place as the best university outside of Budapest as well as the 2nd best university in the entire country.

In the end, universities from 42 countries managed to get on the long list. The first two places of the list are taken up by UK universities. The University of Oxford is in the first place again this year while the University of Cambridge ranked two places higher than last year and managed to score second place. Several European universities made it to the top 200 of the list, with Germany and the Netherlands being in the lead. An interesting phenomenon is China’s steady improvement. According to the THE website: “the Asian giant is now home to two universities in the top 30: Peking and Tsinghua.”

The methodology of the list

According to the list’s website, they judged the universities based on:

“all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.”

The list started out 14 years ago. It takes into consideration 13 factors that indicate the performance of students and professors at the universities. These include the learning environment, the volume and reputation of the research and the income that results from it, the influence of the research (number of citations), the international outlook on staff, students and research and, last but not least, knowledge transfer.

site selection Hungary

Hungary has the eighth most investment projects in the world, according to American corporate magazine Site Selection.

Péter Szijjártó, the foreign and trade minister, citing the magazine that

ranks Hungary No. 1 in the eastern European region in terms of the best place to invest,

told a press conference on Thursday that the country, with its small, open economy, must participate in the “cutthroat international struggle” for investment if it is to maintain its job creation dynamic.

“The country’s inclusion in a top-ten ranking by such a respected professional journal is of extraordinary significance as it can sway investors,” he said.

In Site Selection’s global ranking of investment projects by country, Hungary was in eighth place with 74 projects. China and Germany topped the list, with 777 and 455 projects, respectively. Poland was in fifth place, with 140, and Romania was in tenth, with 70.

In a Site Selection ranking of the top ten countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia based on total amount of investment and investment projects, Hungary was number one. It also topped the regional ranking for investment value per capita.

As the Site Selection said:

“The 10th annual Global Best to Invest Awards are based in part on capital investment into private-sector facilities in each country (total projects and per capita projects) as compiled by Conway Analytics. Qualifying projects are corporate facility investments (from both FDI and domestic expansion) that contribute to the well-being of the areas in which they are made by meeting at least one of the following three criteria:

  • Represent a minimum investment of US$1 million
  • Create a minimum of 20 new jobs
  • Involve at least 20,000 sq. ft. (1,900 sq. m.) of new space.

The following four data sets are also used to compile these proprietary rankings:

  • World Bank Doing Business 2017, which gauges a nation’s ease of doing business;
  • Overall ranking in the most recent Global Competitiveness Report from the World Economic Forum;
  • The Human Development Index from the United Nations Development Programme, which focuses on people and their capabilities as indicators of national development;

The best primary schools in Hungary

The institutions listed in this article had superbly developed their students’ abilities. That is also true for children with learning difficulties or troubled family background. There are public, canonical, and practising schools on the list as well, according to eduline.hu.

Evaluation aspects

The best educational institutes have been ranked since 2015 according to their teaching effectiveness. Furthermore, it is also an important feature how much teachers can reduce students’ disabilities. The list is based on the Hungarian national competency tests. Every 4, 6, 8, and 10 graders write this test annually in May. There are two skills students need to have good results in. These are mathematics and reading comprehension. All students’ results can be compared with their own results from the previous two years. The children and also their families can fill out a questionary where they can share details about their social life, for example, whether they receive child support or if the parents have full-time jobs. This helps to examine connections between their results and their social status.

Types of schools

All primary schools in Hungary have a chance to make it to the list whether it is a private, a public, a canonical, or a practising institution. A practising school is a special type of school that is part of a university where teachers trainee students can practice the teaching of what they learnt. These include schools such as the ELTE Gyertyánffy István Practising Primary School (ELTE Gyertyánffy István Gyakorló Általános Iskola) or the Béla IV Primary School in Hejőkeresztúr, which received a Prima Primissima prize for its effective pedagogical methods.

World Happiness Report 2018 from Hungarian perspective – promising or shocking results?

happiness

By now, we know based on several previous reports that Hungarians are not the happiest people in the world. Still, an improving tendency can be witnessed when looking at this year’s research, reports Infostart.hu. The World Happiness Report 2018 measuring the state of global happiness in 156 countries worldwide, focused on other issues as well, such as changes seen in the level of happiness compared to previous years, health problems affecting the whole nation and the tolerance of countries towards immigrants. Here is what Hungary’s 69th position on the list means compared to the results of other countries.

World Happiness

The World Happiness Report was made based on the results of the Gallup World Poll surveys conducted between 2015 and 2017 in 156 countries. The general happiness of each nation was examined by taking into consideration the GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity and absence of corruption, can be read on Worldhappiness.report.

The final ranking of the countries shows the swapping of some places compared to previous years since Finland became the 1st moving up from its 5th position last year. Locals say that the best thing about their country is the proximity of nature, public safety, childcare facilities, good education and the free health care system. Norway and Denmark follow Finland, but Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New-Zealand, Sweden and Australia are also among the TOP 10 countries.

Hungary became the 69th happiest country out of the 156, which means that it is in the middle race on the list.

Changes in the levels of happiness

The report, available here, also focused on the changes seen in the levels of happiness. Out of the 141 countries with data from 2008-2010 and 2015-2017, significant changes have been experienced in 114. These were both improvements and declines comparing the results of previous years. On this list, Hungary became the 9th country showing the most development with an increase of +0.810 on a 10-point scale. This is not too bad if we consider that the greatest improvement; that of Togo was +1.191.

Health problems

Another critical aspect measured in the participant countries is the rate of obesity, a global epidemic. America is still the leading country where 38.2% of the population is affected by this health problem. Mexico is at 2nd place, but obesity is an urgent problem in Canada, the UK, Australia and New-Zealand as well.

Hungary cannot be proud either since based on its 2015 results, 30% of the total population, a little bit more women than men, are obese. These results are saddening since the neighbouring countries have far better results.

Acceptance of immigrants

Finally, a very educational issue, the tolerance and acceptance of immigrants, is brought to light in the report. Since the migrant crisis starting in 2015, the question of welcoming immigrants or not has stirred controversy in several countries. It was asked from those interviewed whether they judge the following things good or bad:

  • Immigrants living in their country
  • An immigrant becoming their neighbour
  • An immigrant marrying one of their close relatives.

Surprising data was born. Among the most accepting countries are Iceland and New Zealand, but Western Europe, North America and Oceania were also welcoming nations.

However, the least accepting countries were mainly from Eastern and Southeastern Europe which the report explains with the fact that they have been personally affected by the migration crisis.

Hungary itself had a 1.69 score on this issue which is very low among the participant countries.

Tolerance towards immigrants/s3.amazonaws.com/happiness-report/2018/WHR_web.pdf/

All in all, promising and saddening results are both revealed in the report concerning Hungary, but we hope that the growing tendency of Hungarians’ general happiness will further improve in the future and some changes can be achieved in other domains as well.

Budapest among the best cities in the world based on the needs of millennials

budapest city center sights

Origo.hu reports the results of the latest research setting up the list of the most livable and attractive cities for millennials in the world. Besides employment opportunities, rental prices and lively nightlife, the survey also examined issues like how developed tourism is in the target cities and how tolerant locals are about immigrants. Budapest became the 37th most livable city in the world, and in the following, you can figure out in what ways it is attractive to tourists and where it should make further improvements.

Nestpick, the most well-known site helping people find the perfect apartment by comparing thousands of offers, surveyed what digitally native millennials find important when choosing a place to settle down. It turned out from the results that the majority of youngsters consider housing and human rights the most influential factors when choosing the right city, which also means that vibrant nightlife and partying are only secondary aspects to them.

Altogether 110 cities were involved in the study the main aim of which was to pose such questions as how affordable life is in the examined cities or how tolerant and open-minded locals are there.

Besides the most dominant aspects, like housing, affordability, transport and healthcare opportunities, university life, the speed of the Internet, the price of festivals and beer were also evaluated. All aspects examined were graded on a 10-point scale.

Among the TOP 3 cities is Berlin with a maximum score for vibrant nightlife, Montréal with 9.9 points for immigration tolerance and London with 10 points given for excellent academic and touristic opportunities available to youngsters.

The ranking of the first 5 countries /www.nestpick.com/ Budapest on the list /www.nestpick.com/

As far as the Hungarian capital is concerned, Budapest became the 37th city on the list out of the 110 cities. It was only preceded by Prague and Vienna from the neighbouring region which is an outstanding achievement.

The highest scores were given for cheap beer (9.4) and employment opportunities (9.4), but the price of food (8.8) and the affordability of housing (8.7) were also among the most attractive factors of the capital.

As far as the worst results of Budapest are concerned, festivals and the amount of personal freedom guaranteed to people got 0.7 points while education and immigration tolerance were both scored 1.0.

With this result, the Hungarian capital preceded such big names as Boston and Washington D.C. or Rome and Edinburgh, so our ranking is quite remarkable in the world.

The Hotel of the Year in Hungary 2017 announced

Hungary was voting for the Hotel of the Year 2017, and its finals has just ended. To everyone’s surprise, two hotels from Eastern Hungary took the top ranks. Here we list the awarded entries.

The voting for Hotel of the Year in Hungary 2017 was concluded recently, as Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu reported. The audience could vote online for the best places of accommodation in the country. The poll had been active for two weeks in January, and there were 8 entries to choose from, each of which was representing a region of Hungary.

114,287 votes were submitted from 75,441 people during the 9 months of competition. 46 hotels participated altogether.

The winner of the Hotel of the Year in Hungary 2017 was Bambara Hotel**** superior from Northeastern Hungary. It resides at the entrance of Bükk near Eger, in the forest of Felsőtárkány. The speciality of the hotel is its authentic African architectural style, not to mention its unique dishes. Bambara Spa resembles a Dogon tribal village where outdoor and indoor pools, brushwood and African herbarium huts, salt spray steam cabins, driftwood saunas, a meditation centre and a mysterious cave bath await visitors spending their night in the hotel.

The second prize went to Hotel Délibáb****, representative of the area of Hajdúszoboszló and Debrecen. The hotel itself can be found in inner Hajdúszoboszló, and it is the largest bathing complex in Hungary. It is situated next to the 25-hectare-large thermal bath. The hotel consists of three wings, and it contains the most delicate rooms, while its common rooms have an incredibly relaxing atmosphere.

The bronze medal was won by the “champion” of Budapest’s area, Thermal Hotel Visegrád****superior. The hotel lies in the fantastic Danube Bend near Visegrad, right next to Pilis National Park. It can be easily accessed from the centre of Budapest. One of the main attractions of the hotel is Duna restaurant with its terrace facing towards the stunning panorama of Danube Bend. Visegrad is also famous for its mineral water stream that bursts up from 1300 meters, supporting the pools of the wellness centre in the neighbourhood of the hotel.

The audience can vote for their favourite hotels at www.facebook.com/azevhotele, selecting the best of each region every month. These chosen hotels compete for the title of the Hotel of the Year in Hungary at the end of each season. Last year’s best was Spirit Hotel Thermal Spa.

Which is the most unhappy country in the EU? Hungary?

emotions smile face happy

Every year a new rank is set up about how people feel themselves in their home country and how satisfied they are with their living conditions. This is called the happiness report that, as Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu reports, reveals that the situation of Hungarians is more aggravating than we had thought.

The most recent study, conducted between October and November of 2017 by the Independent, investigated how happy and satisfied the citizens are in European countries.

The survey, carried out in the 28 Member States of the European Union, was called Future of Europe that especially focused on questions dealing with social issues.

However, questions also touched upon whether the citizens are satisfied with their family life, their current occupation, their life in their country and in the European Union.

As indy100.com reports, the top countries including Denmark (99%), Ireland (98%), The Netherlands (97%) and Sweden (97%) achieved outstanding results, while Romania (67%), Bulgaria (66%) and Hungary (62%) have much to worry about.

/Source: European Commission, Created with Datawrapper/

The excellent results of the Northern EU countries might not surprise anyone given that they are leading the EU happiness reports for years and they are widely considered to be the happiest nations in Europe. But is it really so bad to be a Hungarian citizen?

As the survey, which is available in its full length here, brings it to light, Hungarians have a bigger preferance for a society where more emphasis is placed on solidarity. However, compared to the results of the 2012 report, more Hungarian citizens agreed now with the statement that they are happy living in their country and are satisfied with their current job.

Although this seems to be a step ahead, the overall result showing that only 62% of the population is satisfied with the living conditions does not really reflect a progress.

In 2016, we have reported that a happiness map was designed by the Psychological Laboratory of Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest that highlights in which part of the country people are the most satisfied. In Western Hungary, for instance, citizens were among the happiest groups because of better opportunities, while those living in Nógrád, Heves and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén counties in the northern part of Hungary were much less content.

In fact, it is not good to see that even neighbouring countries like Romania or Bulgaria precedes Hungary, but it can motivate us to catch up with them and work on the solution of the problems.
