A Budapest court has ordered the pre-trial detention of a teenage boy for one month on suspicion of murdering his great-grandmother, the Budapest Metropolitan Court’s press office said on Monday.
Hungarian teenage boy gruesomely murdered his great-grandmother
Police previously reported that an 85-year-old woman had been killed at a property on Práter Street in Budapest. By Saturday, investigators had identified the alleged perpetrator as the victim’s 16-year-old great-grandson. He was questioned on suspicion of homicide, taken into custody, and prosecutors formally requested his arrest.
His partner, a 15-year-old girl, was also questioned as a suspect on suspicion of assisting an offender. She too was detained, with prosecutors seeking her arrest, the Hungarian news agency wrote.
According to the court, there is a well-founded suspicion that the boy had planned to obtain money or valuables from his great-grandmother. In preparation, he reportedly searched online for methods of rendering an elderly person defenceless, including through the use of medication or suffocation.

Two days later, the suspect, accompanied by his underage girlfriend and younger sibling, visited the victim in the evening and demanded money. An argument ensued, during which the boy allegedly struck the elderly woman from behind, seized her by the neck, and stabbed and cut her several times with a sharp instrument. He then took a gold chain with a pendant from her neck, two rings from her fingers, and her earrings, leaving the scene with the items, along with a mobile phone. The victim died at the scene from her injuries.
The old woman had to die for 70 euros
The following day, the boy and his girlfriend pawned the stolen earrings at a Budapest pawnshop, receiving 25,000 forints (EUR 70) in return. At a hearing, the investigating judge found that there were sufficient grounds to suspect the boy of aggravated homicide, while the girl is suspected of assisting in connection with the killing.

Prosecutors argued that the boy’s detention was necessary to prevent flight, concealment, or interference with evidence. In the case of the girl, they sought a form of criminal supervision restricting her to a designated residence. The court granted both requests.
The boy’s detention, set at one month, is to be carried out in a juvenile correctional facility, while the girl’s supervision will remain in place for four months. The ruling is final in the girl’s case, while an appeal has been lodged in respect of the boy.
