Hungary’s Chief Prosecutor for Budapest has brought charges of attempted aggravated murder and other offences against seven Vietnamese men, seeking custodial sentences, after they allegedly attacked their creditors with machetes.

Vietnamese restaurant owner owed a lot of money

In a statement issued to the Hungarian news agency MTI on Wednesday, the prosecutor’s office said a 46-year-old Vietnamese man, who runs a restaurant in Budapest, had accumulated substantial gambling debts. He owed a total exceeding 22 million forints to three fellow Vietnamese men, later identified as the victims. Unable to settle his liabilities, he resolved instead to eliminate his creditors.

To carry out the plan, he enlisted four other Vietnamese men. Under the pretext of repaying his debts, he arranged to meet the three victims on the afternoon of 6 February 2025 at his restaurant in Budapest’s 10th district. His accomplices lay in wait nearby, dressed in black with hoods and masks concealing their faces, and armed with 40 to 50-centimetre machetes.

Upon the victims’ arrival, accompanied by two others, the 46-year-old man ushered one of them into an office opposite the restaurant, while the rest remained on the terrace. During the meeting, the defendant demanded that the victim settle his outstanding debts to the others. When the man refused, he was threatened with death the moment he stepped outside.

Ordering a murder

One of the victims ultimately fled the scene. Meanwhile, the accused instructed his returning accomplices to kill the two remaining victims and their companions on the terrace. All but one of the men under attack managed to escape. The individual left behind was assaulted by three of the accused using the machetes, sustaining serious injuries.

The Budapest Chief Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges reflecting the roles of the individual defendants, including attempted murder with premeditation against multiple victims, attempted grievous bodily harm, and other offences. The prosecution has requested that the court impose custodial sentences—six of the defendants are currently under coercive measures—and order their expulsion from Hungary, the statement added.
