49th Debrecen flower carnival – Photo gallery, VIDEO here!
The flower carnival of Debrecen is one of the most beloved festivities of Hungarians and foreigners alike. The carnival is also the major tourist attraction of the city of Debrecen, which is worth visiting due to many other reasons as well.
This year’s flower carnival in Debrecen started on 14 August and lasted until the 21st of August.
This year is special because the carnival usually ends on the 20th, but it lasts a day longer this year.
As we have reported earlier, several Hungarian and foreign performers were invited this year to make the week-long event unforgettable.
The flower carnival of Debrecen is the biggest parade in the whole country, the festivities last for an entire week with performers coming from all over the country and from abroad.
This year, as always, the highlight of the event was the parade on the 20th of August, when vehicles were carrying the gigantic flower compositions (made out of hundreds of thousands of od flowers) through the city. Here, you can read about why the 20th of August is such an important day in Hungary, and what exactly Hungarians celebrate on that day.
Festivities
The huge event had much more than flowers to offer. This year’s event also included 3D mapping, light shows, an old-timer exhibition and a Check beer garden. As always, dozens of performers were invited to give concerts or amaze visitors with their dance performances.
During carnival night, more than 2,000 people performed on stage, including singers from the popular Hungarian singing show: A Dal.
There was also a festival within the festival for children, a food truck show and fireworks.
Visitors’ favourite carriage this year was created by sculptor István Abai-Nagy, designers Marianna Lovas and Beáta Sápi, structural engineer Imre Bodó and constructor Tamás Gulyás. The winning carriage was given the title: Krones megérkezett Debrecenbe [Krones arrived in Debrecen].
The winner’s prize was a unique goblet designed by world-famous Herendi Porcelain Manufactory worth HUF 500 000.
Other winners were chosen by a panel of judges based on different categories, such as the best Hungarian art team, the best foreign art team or special prize winners.
