Hungarian Pumi: the fluffy shepherd dog you never knew you needed in your life – VIDEOS
Finally, a Hungarian dog breed you can have in an apartment! The pumi is a lesser-known Hungarian dog breed. Pumis are just as smart, loyal and adorable dogs as the pulis or the vizslas, but they require slightly less exercise, which is good news for the city people.

The pumi breed can be traced back to the 17th century. This breed was born from the combination of the Hungarian shepherd dogs and the terrier-like herding dogs of France and Germany. The majority of the population is still found in Hungary today. Let us look at what YouTube has to show us about this fluffy breed.
If you are interested in other Hungarian dog breeds as well, check out the previous articles of this series: the one about the puli, the vizsla or the komondor.
Meet the pumi
In this video, you can learn all there is to know about the Hungarian pumi from Chris Levy, president of the Hungarian Pumi Club of America. Among other things, she talks about how the pumis have the same joy of life that terriers do but, at the same time, they have the temperament of a shepherd dog.
Moreover, pumis are extremely smart dogs, therefore very easy to train. Even though their name is similar to that of the pulis, and the two dog breeds do share many characteristics, the pumi is much easier to groom, and they do not shed.
Interesting facts about the pumi
Did you know that the pumi forms extremely strong bonds with its family? They are also very vocal, muscular and active dogs. Pumis are naturally suspicious of other animals, so they might not be very friendly with strange dogs or other animals.

AKC breed recognition
Besides the puli and the vizsla, Americans seem to like this particular Hungarian dog breed as well, as the pumi has been part of the American Kennel Club since 2016. Daily News Hungary reported on the issues earlier, how the Hungarian breed was acknowledged in the United States. This acknowledgement meant that pumis could officially participate in the most famous dog show in the United States, at the Westminster Kennel Club.
Crazy life of a pumi puppy
Pumis love to play! Although they are just fine chilling with you while watching TV, they do need some exercise every day. So, be committed to take them outside daily. Look how much they enjoy a fun hour outside:
