Battery plant construction protested against in Hungary
Opposition LMP spokesperson Anna Süveg said government plans to turn Hungary into a “battery production superpower” are “dangerous and wrong” at a press conference on Saturday.
Áron Tóth, the party’s head in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, warned that preparations by the mayor of Szolnok, in central Hungary, to expand the city’s industrial park as well as a decision to hand over the local waterworks to the state suggest a battery plant could be built there.
He asked Ferenc Szalai, the city’s Fidesz mayor, to make an announcement on whether or not a battery plant is planned in Szolnok.
Süveg complained that the government has “systematically scaled back the institutional system for environmental protection since 2021” and said waterworks are “on the brink of collapse”.
