A Budapest man collected – and even consumed – human body parts, police have revealed, releasing disturbing details along with images and video footage. Here’s what the cannibal did.

Budapest cannibal scoured abandoned cemeteries

Skulls, bones, a preserved human face, a severed hand, a brain and an organ kept in a jar – these were among the shocking discoveries officers made at properties linked to a 30-year-old man in Budapest. Investigators say he obsessively collected human remains and, by his own admission, prepared and ate meals from some of them, 24.hu wrote.

According to police, the Homicide Unit of the National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI) launched the inquiry after receiving information that a hospital orderly in Budapest may have been storing human body parts both at his workplace and at home. Authorities have not disclosed the source of the tip-off, though it may have come via an anonymous hotline.

The investigation found that the man had a keen interest in anatomy and pathology, regularly dissected animals, and is suspected of having obtained human remains as well. Police believe he may have acquired body parts partly through professional contacts, while also searching for remains in Slovakia and in abandoned cemeteries across Hungary. His family and friends were reportedly aware of his macabre hobby, and he documented his collection in photographs.

Lower leg found alongside brain and hand

Detectives arrested the man on June 17 in Budapest’s second district. Searches of properties he used, as well as his vehicle, led to the seizure of computers, mobile phones and storage devices, though the most disturbing evidence was the cache of human remains.

Police said they found a preserved human face and facial skin, bones stored in a suitcase, an entire lower leg, a brain, a hand and several skulls. The origin of a heart kept in a jar is still under examination, and it remains unclear whether it is human or animal.

The man has been charged with the unlawful use of a human body. During questioning, he admitted the offence and stated that he felt a particular attraction to human body parts. He also confessed to preparing and consuming food made from some of the remains.

Earlier case of mortuary assistant

Six years ago, a similar case involving a mortuary assistant from Páty attracted media attention. The man, who lived in severe financial hardship, attempted to supplement his income by removing human tissue used for examinations from hospitals and disposing of it on his own property, rather than through the costly official procedures. His actions came to light during a car sale, leading to fraud charges. We discolosed the details then.
