Visitors and residents around Lake Balaton are once again experiencing the annual invasion of non-biting midges, but this year’s emergence has reached such an extraordinary scale that it has produced a rare atmospheric phenomenon.
Rare radar phenomenon reveals the scale of this summer’s midge invasion
According to experts, the enormous swarms have become visible on weather radar, where they appeared as rain clouds hovering above Hungary’s largest lake. The unusual radar images were first spotted by weather enthusiasts at Vmet.hu, who initially believed they were observing water vapour rising from the lake.
It was later confirmed that the apparent cloud formation was in fact caused by millions of Chironomus balatonicus, the Balaton midge, emerging simultaneously from the lake. Researchers say the radar interference begins shortly after 9 PM and typically continues until around midnight, coinciding with the insects’ evening mass emergence.

Scientists have been monitoring the phenomenon
Gábor Vasas, director of the Balaton Limnological Research Institute (BLKI), said the institute has been studying the unusual radar signatures together with experts from Hungary’s national meteorological service, HungaroMet.
According to Vasas, this is the period when the Balaton midge undergoes its annual mass emergence. The sheer density of the insects creates interference that appears on weather radar as precipitation, despite there being no rainfall. Researchers also warn that although the current swarming only intensified a few days ago, it is likely to continue for several weeks.
A nuisance for people, but essential for Lake Balaton
The swarms have become an increasing source of frustration for lakeside residents, restaurant owners, accommodation providers and event organisers, particularly during warm summer evenings. However, experts stress that the insects are completely harmless to humans.
Unlike mosquitoes, Balaton midges do not bite, and their control or eradication is prohibited by law. As a result, neither local authorities nor pest control organisations are permitted to carry out extermination measures. Scientists say the insects play an indispensable role in maintaining the lake’s ecological balance, despite the inconvenience they cause.
Why the insects matter
The larvae spend their lives in the sediment at the bottom of the lake, feeding on organic matter and algae. In doing so, they help clean and aerate the lake bed while also serving as an important food source for young fish, aquatic birds, swallows and bats.
Their ecological contribution continues after they emerge as adults. During this process, they remove significant quantities of phosphorus and nitrogen from the lake. According to calculations by the BLKI, a single mass emergence can transfer several tonnes of these nutrients from the water into the surrounding terrestrial environment.
This natural process helps reduce eutrophication—the excessive nutrient enrichment that can lead to harmful algal blooms and deteriorating water quality.

An important indicator of water quality
Despite their ecological benefits, researchers say the unusually large swarms may also signal changes within Lake Balaton itself. The abundance and species composition of midge larvae are highly sensitive to changes in water quality. The current increase suggests that the lake’s internal nutrient load is rising again, a trend that could contribute to water quality problems over the longer term if it continues.
Scientists therefore emphasise that the insects should not be viewed as the cause of environmental problems but rather as a biological indicator that provides valuable insight into the health of Lake Balaton.
