A 23-year-old man has died after being stabbed in the heart during an attack in Debrecen in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to eyewitness accounts cited by RTL Híradó, the two young men had confronted the alleged attacker after seeing him assaulting a woman in the street.
As previously reported, two young men were stabbed by a 64-year-old man on Múzeum Street in Debrecen at around 3 AM on 30 August. Police said the attack was preceded by a verbal altercation, after which the man pulled out a knife and stabbed both victims.
Both men were taken to hospital by paramedics. Police arrested the suspect approximately two hours after the incident.
Young man stabbed in the heart dies
The 23-year-old victim from Létavértes was stabbed in the heart and suffered life-threatening injuries. RTL Híradó has now reported that he died from his injuries despite efforts to save his life.
His 24-year-old friend was stabbed in the abdomen. He also suffered serious injuries but was able to reach a nearby tobacconist’s shop and ask for help. His condition is reportedly stable.
A third member of the group escaped the attack unharmed. According to the report, he tried to stop the bleeding from his friend’s chest wound with both hands while waiting for help to arrive.
The injured 23-year-old was still able to communicate at the scene, but paramedics were unable to save his life.
Young men allegedly confronted attacker over woman
RTL Híradó reported, citing eyewitnesses, that the incident began after the 64-year-old man allegedly assaulted a woman while shouting at her in the street.
The two young men reportedly approached him and told him to stop and leave the woman alone. The man allegedly then pulled out a knife and approached the two victims, who were sitting on a bench. The precise circumstances of the confrontation are still being investigated.
Police previously said that the 64-year-old suspect was arrested after officers searched the surrounding streets for approximately two hours. He was questioned as a suspect, taken into custody, and prosecutors were asked to order his detention.
The Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters’ Criminal Directorate is investigating the case on suspicion of causing life-threatening bodily harm. Following the victim’s death, the legal classification of the alleged offence may now be subject to change.
