As temperatures climb above 30°C or even more across Hungary, thousands of people are heading to beaches, spas and outdoor pools in search of relief. In recent years, a day spent in the water has become increasingly expensive, but is it really that costly?

Spending a day at a spa can cost a hefty amount

For many families, a simple day of swimming has become a significant expense. A closer look at Budapest’s famous Palatinus Bath on Margaret Island shows just how much a summer outing can cost in 2026.

The Palatinus is widely regarded as Budapest’s main outdoor bathing complex. Its central location, extensive pools and wellness facilities, including thermal water and saunas, make it one of the capital’s most popular summer destinations.

A standard adult ticket costs HUF 6,000 on weekdays and HUF 6,500 at weekends, while visitors who only wish to stay for two hours can purchase a shorter ticket for HUF 4,400–4,900, depending on the time of entry. Family discounts are also available, with a four-person weekend family ticket costing around HUF 18,000.

The buffet can be more painful than the entrance fee

While admission prices often attract the most attention, food and drink can quickly push spending much higher, reports Telex.

A recent comparison of prices at Palatinus found that a traditional fried hake now costs close to HUF 5,000, making it one of the most expensive items on offer. Hungary’s beloved lángos topped with cheese and sour cream has reached HUF 3,500, while a Nutella pancake costs around HUF 750. A draught beer is typically priced at HUF 1,200.

The figures highlight how much costs have risen in recent years. According to the comparison, recreating a typical HUF 10,000 beach-day budget from 2018 required approximately HUF 19,000 in 2024 and around HUF 23,500 this year.

However, there is another side to the story. Average net wages in Hungary have also increased considerably, rising from roughly HUF 220,000 per month in 2018 to around HUF 540,000 today. As a result, despite higher prices, the affordability of many beach-related expenses has remained relatively stable.

In fact, based on average earnings, Hungarians can theoretically afford more Palatinus entrance tickets today than they could eight years ago. The number of tickets purchasable from an average monthly salary has increased from around 63 in 2018 to more than 80 today.

How do other Hungarian spas compare?

Budapest is not alone in charging premium prices. Across the country, major spa complexes have introduced similar admission fees.

According to Origo, at Aquaticum in Debrecen, an adult weekend ticket costs HUF 6,900, while the famous Hungarospa in Hajdúszoboszló charges HUF 7,400 for adults. Zalakaros Spa has matched that price, while visitors to Gyula’s Castle Spa pay HUF 5,200 for a standard adult ticket, with additional charges applying for some attractions.

For a family of four, admission alone can easily exceed HUF 20,000 at Hungary’s larger spa resorts before any food, drinks or extras are added.

The Balaton remains the budget-friendly alternative

Compared with large spa complexes, Lake Balaton continues to offer significantly cheaper options. At Balatonfüred’s Esterházy Beach, adult tickets cost just HUF 2,700 during the high season, while children pay HUF 1,700. Nearby Csopak Beach charges HUF 2,800 for adults and offers family tickets for HUF 8,800.

Those looking to save even more can choose one of the South Shore’s free beaches, including popular spots in Balatonlelle and Zamárdi.

For many Hungarians, therefore, the real cost of a summer swim depends not only on the entrance ticket but also on what happens after passing through the gates. At flagship venues such as Palatinus, a relaxing day by the pool remains a popular tradition, but one that increasingly requires visitors to dig deeper into their pockets.
