Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathered at the annual Pentecost pilgrimage in Csíksomlyó on Saturday, where Bishop János Székely urged Hungarians to “hold on to Christ’s hand” and rebuild the future together with hope and unity.

Speaking at the traditional open-air Mass between Kis- and Nagysomlyó hills, the bishop said people in the Carpathian Basin could only prosper together while respecting each other’s rights and cultures. He described the pilgrimage as a reminder for believers to draw strength and hope from faith and reconnect with one another.
Székely also praised the faith, resilience and hospitality of the Hungarian communities in Transylvania, saying their perseverance and optimism serve as an example for all Hungarians. Referring to the many “storms” facing humanity today, he said Christians should seek strength in Christ and remain faithful even in difficult times.
The bishop highlighted the examples of former Transylvanian bishop Áron Márton, Saint Francis of Assisi and the Virgin Mary, calling on pilgrims to build a future based on faith, love and solidarity rather than hatred.
Pilgrims arrived from across the world, many travelling overnight on foot while singing church hymns. Among those attending the Mass was Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, alongside former President János Áder and his wife Anita Herczegh.
