Oremus Winery’s 2016 Tokaji Aszú, a six puttonyos selection, has been named among just 50 ‘Best in Show’ wines at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), widely regarded as one of the most prestigious competitions in the global wine calendar.
Now in its 23rd year, the DWWA was held in London, attracting nearly 17,000 entries from 58 countries. A panel of 245 experts, including 63 Masters of Wine and 24 Master Sommeliers, judged the field. Hungary’s Kreinbacher Estate, meanwhile, secured one platinum, one gold and two silver medals at the event, according to a company statement.
Under the competition’s notably exacting judging criteria, gold medals are awarded only to wines scoring 95 points or above. Platinum awards are then granted following a second tasting of gold medal winners, recognising the very finest entries; this year, 198 wines achieved that distinction, with scores ranging from 97 to 100 points.
Hungary once again delivered a strong performance, with the international jury awarding a total of eight platinum, 15 gold, 52 silver and 68 bronze medals to Hungarian wines.

Among the competition’s top 50 wines overall was a Hungarian entry: Oremus’s 2016 six puttonyos Tokaji Aszú from Tolcsva.
Tokaji wines dominated Hungary’s platinum medal haul this year, with Antalóczy, Balassa (which secured two platinum awards), Béres, Füleky and Juliet Victor all receiving top honours. Beyond Tokaj, Heumann’s La Trinita red blend from Villány and Kreinbacher Estate’s Brut Classic sparkling wine from Somló also claimed platinum awards.
