(MTI) – Once refurbished, Budapest’s Puskas Ferenc Stadium will become a suitable venue for competitions in over 20 branches of sport, big concerts and other large-scale events, Development Minister Miklos Sesztak said on Thursday.

15Presenting the mock-ups of the project, Sesztak said he trusted the stadium would lend fresh impetus to Hungarian sports and enable the country’s sports diplomats to bid to host big sporting events.

The investment project will create plenty of new jobs and provide orders for a broad range of Hungarian suppliers, he said.

Laszlo Vigh, director of National Sports Centres, said that the new stadium would be “unique in the world” in so far as it would be built within the old one, and the space between the two would accommodate offices, a 180-bed hotel and a diagnostics centre. On its roof there will be a six-lane panorama track, open to all.

The top-notch stadium will be an all-seater with a capacity of 68,000. In case of concerts, however, it will offer space to as many as 80,000 spectators, Vigh said.

Sandor Csanyi, President of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), said the MLSZ had presented a bid to organise some matches of Euro 2020. Before that, the association hopes to host a Champions League or a Europa League final in Budapest.

According to estimates, the new stadium will cost 90-100 billion forints (EUR 288-320m), Vigh said.
