Strange legends behind the discovery of famous Hungarian medicinal waters

hungary harkány water visit

Termalfurdo.hu notes that Hungary is abundant in medicinal waters and Southern Transdanubia is no exception to it. The medicinal waters and spas of Harkány, Igal and Kaposvár, are among the most beloved recreational places of the region. This article unfolds how these secret waters were discovered and what strange stories are behind them.

Just like the majority of thermal baths in Hungary, the ones in Southern Transdanubia were also discovered while searching for mineral reserves. In fact, the discovery of these waters also meant the failure of geologists looking for oil or natural gas. The communist regime commissioned these people, but instead of minerals, they found emerging hot water. At that time, people did not know about the therapeutic and touristic opportunities lying behind the waters.

However, not only industrial researches led to the discovery of well-known Hungarian baths, but everyday observations of people, too.

In many cases, the emerging water was used for the treatment of animals, but after witnessing the beneficial effects of waters with their own eyes, locals also liked standing or sitting in the hot springs. In the following, you can read about some of the gorgeous Southern baths in Hungary which provide evidence for the theories mentioned above.

1. Gunaras Bath – once the pond of geese

The Gunaras Bath, the name of which already refers to secret stories, is only 3 km from Dombóvár. Allegedly, it got its name after being the pond of geese at the beginning of the 20th century. According to the legend, local women working on the cornfield washed their legs in the water on their way home. It was them who spread the news about the beneficial effects of the water that alleviated their rheumatic pain. As the news spread about the magic water, more and more people arrived at the settlement and scientists also proved the medicinal effects of the emerging hot spring. The water of Gunaras was declared to be medicinal water in 1977.

2. Igal Health Spa – the home of thermal water instead of oil

The history of the Igal Health Spa can be retraced to the 1940s when people looked for minerals, especially oil, in the neighbourhood. In contrast to the assumption that the area is rich in oil, oil was not found, but from a 651-meter depth, 81 °C water emerged onto the surface. People had to wait until 1962 when the decision was made about constructing a spa. In 1962, two pools were opened to the public, but three years later, they winterised the pools and covered them so that they can be used now all year round. In 1967, outdoor pools, a swimming pool and children pools were constructed which make the establishment one of the most beloved complexes in the region.

3. Bath of Magyarhertelend – famous for its thermal water and not for its coal

Generally considered, typical Hungarian baths were discovered during the search for natural gas or oil. However, the bath located in Magyarhertelend, not far from Pécs, is an exception to this assumption. In 1958, people were looking for coal and not for oil like in most settlements when at a depth of 550 meters, thermal water emerged out of nothing.

Today, the bath is well-known for its two thermal wells which provide water of 38°C and 68°C .

The water of the bath is beneficial for those suffering from rheumatic or circulatory problems.

4. Harkány Thermal Bath– preserves the footprint of the devil

There are some stories about the rightly famous hot spring of Harkány. According to one of the legends, which can also be read on the wall of the establishment, the water was created by the devil. As the story goes, the devil wanted to get married to a beautiful local girl, but eventually, he could not win her hand. Therefore, the devil escaped under the ground, and at that place, sulphur water emerged. This is how the famous Thermal Bath of Harkány was born according to the tale.

/harkanyfurdo.hu/

However, this is not entirely true. The speciality of the area is that the high-temperature water is very close to the surface.

The medicinal effects of the water rested unknown for quite a long time until the Batthyány family living there wanted to drain the swampy land to obtain more pastures.

For this reason, day labourers had to dig a channel. Among the workers, a man called János Pogány regularly suffered from rheumatic problems. He realised, however, that after working in the swamp, all his symptoms and pain were alleviated. The news spread very quickly about the magical power of the water, and the owner also saw the business opportunity lying in the land. For this reason, in 1825, construction works started in the area. This is how the Harkány Thermal Bath was born.

Hungarian people’s choice – the best thermal baths

According to Origo.hu, one-third of Hungarians visit thermal baths at least once a year. People over 55 years return regularly.

According to the study, three counties lead the list of regular bathers: Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Tolna, and Komárom Esztergom. The national representative research made on behalf of NaturMed Hotel Barbona of Hévíz reveals that the rate of visitors of thermal baths is the highest in these three counties.

34% of respondents visit a thermal bath at least once a year, 39% visit a bath every two or three years, or even more rarely, and one-quarter of them has never been to a thermal bath before.

The study shows that visiting thermal baths is a popular past-time among young people and the middle-aged age group as well.

More than one-third of 18-24 year-olds and 35-44 year-olds go to thermal baths at least on a yearly basis, 37%, and 36%. Two more age groups are conspicuous: 37% of 45-54 year-olds and 39% of 55-64 year-olds go to baths at least once a year.

40% of respondents believe that medicinal water has a beneficial effect on rheumatic diseases.

28% mentioned its positive effect on inflammatory joint diseases and spine diseases. 20% of respondents mentioned the follow-up care of joint surgeries, 18% the rehabilitation after bone breaks, injuries caused by accidents, and locomotor surgeries.

The research was conducted by Tárki Társadalomkutatási Intézet Zrt. by order of NaturMed Hitel Carbona last October.

The baths of touristic importance are popular according to data from the Hungarian Touristic Agency and the data of the statistics office. In 2016, thermal baths generated a tourist traffic of 28.8 million people and 64.2 billion HUF income.

Tackle wintertime colds with the steam baths of Hungary

sauna

According to termalfurdo.hu, steam bathing has been one of the favourite activities of people desiring to rest and heal for centuries. Most people connect it with relaxing and facial treatments, but it actually has much more to it 😉

Hungarians and different cultures all over the world discovered the benefits of steam baths quite a long time ago. The bathing ritual played an important role in – among others – the Roman, Turkish and Indian culture. Hippocrates, the father of sciences, stated:

“Let me be powerful enough to cause fever so that I could cure all diseases”

This is something researchers and academics still find true and relevant. Fever is one of the most effective protection against diseases. Fever increases the body’s temperature, thus trying to kill invasive microorganisms and extruding contaminants from the system.

Fever has been acknowledged as an effective and natural way of curing illnesses and restoring health for centuries.

The hypothermia generates fever in the body on purpose so that it can take advantage of its natural, curing reaction. And the easiest way to produce hypothermia is by using the steam bath.

You can strengthen your immune system by visiting one of the many steam baths found in Hungary. The process invigorates blood circulation so that our body can detoxify itself through the lymphatic system.

Steam bathing isn’t only beneficial for our health and appearance, it can also be considered a type of therapy. Thanks to its high humidity, it has a positive effect on respiratory problems since it works similarly to inhalation. It eliminates exudates and allergens from the lungs.

It is a great therapy in case of asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, frontal sinusitis and allergies. The warm and wet air of the steam bath alleviates the bronchia, lungs, nasal passages, thus decreasing the pain.

In addition, sweating is quite beneficial for the skin, because the pores open up so that our body can make a clean sweep of toxins and dead epithelial cells.

Dermatologists have also confirmed that steam bathing makes your skin shinier and softer. The reason behind this is that the process invigorates blood circulation, the oxygen supply of deeper layers increases, therefore cells get the nutrients faster and more effectively.

Last but not least, steam baths offer a cure for muscular pain and arthralgia. The injured parts of our body get oxygen and nutrients faster, which speeds up the healing process. This is beneficial in two ways: it immediately eases the pain and speeds up the self-curing mechanisms of our body.

Even 10-15 minutes of steam bathing could do wonders for your health 😉

Thermal baths of Budapest – main attraction among foreigners?

széchenyi bath budapest

According to turizmusonline.hu, the traffic of Budapest baths has reached outstanding rates in the past ten months, because they have been visited by 15% more guests compared to the previous year. The Budapest Gyógyfürdői Inc. recently conducted a survey in the Széchenyi, Gellért, Rudas and Lukács Baths to find out more about the visitors.

The company conducts a survey like this every year, to learn about the visitors of the baths of Budapest. They ask about sex, nationality and the age of the guests.

According to the main result of the survey, 61% of the four greatest baths’ visitors come from abroad.

This rate is especially high in the Széchenyi and Gellért Baths, where more than 70% come from abroad. Besides European countries, the ten most common countries of origin also include Asian countries like China and South Korea.

The top ten countries where foreign visitors come from: Great Britain, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, South Korea, China, Russia, Sweden.

Concerning Hungarian guests, the survey found out that 80% of them were from Budapest, while 10% live in other settlements of Pest County.

Almost 60% of guests are women, except for the Rudas Bath, where the thermal section reminiscent of Turkish times is mostly visited by men.

In contrast with the misconception, more than 30% of bathers are under the age of 30, so baths are not only visited by the elderly wishing to recover.

However, most of the young visitors are foreigners. The circle of Hungarian guests is still dominated by the 50+ age group.

It also turned out from the survey that, while Hungarian guests tend to visit the historic baths of Budapest alone, foreigners usually go with their partners.

Hungarian baths to visit in the colder season

Budapest bath

What could be more cosy than gazing at the autumnal landscape or the snowflakes from a nice hot tub? There are numerous outdoor pools awaiting visitors during winter as well, says termalfurdo.hu. Here is a list of some of them.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Széchenyi Thermal Bath is the biggest and most popular outdoor pool in the capital, one of the ‘stars’ among tourists from abroad. The outdoor pool, which can be found between the beautiful antique buildings, awaits the ones longing for a nice bath in the autumn and winter as well.

In the outdoor pool there is a lazy river, underwater bubbling, neck shower, and a water jet for back massage.

You can quickly get to the indoor pools or saunas from the poolside, where we can warm our bodies even more if we need to. Széchényi Bath, nicknamed “Szecska”, is the biggest bathing complex in Budapest and the whole of Europe. It is so wonderful in the autumn and winter, everyone should try it at least once.

Palatinus

The newest four-season bath in Budapest is Palatinus. Starting from this October, Palatinus will not only have a new covered bath with four pools and a brand new wellness section in it, but two pools of its beach can be used in the wither too: the 40 meter swimming pool and the thermal one beside it.

Napfényfürdő Aquapolis in Szeged

The Napfényfürdő Aquapolis in Szeged offers countless experiences for its visitors in the summer and in the winter alike, even under the sky. In the four-season water city in the indoor pools there are lazy rivers, bubble beds, cascades and other experience features. The indoor pool is connected to the outdoor one. Good news for adults longing for a rest: a new, exclusive wellness section was created in Napfényfürdő Aquapolis, which allows perfect relaxation.

Agárd bath

The surroundings of Velencei tó are reachable in less than an hour from Budapest. In the Bika-völgy in Agárd the Agard Thermal Bath and Spa can be found. The water is 58 °Celsius hot. It has a positive medical effect primarily on musculoskeletal and gynaecological diseases, but can provide a pleasant refreshment for visitors only willing to relax a bit. In the bath, an almost 1400 square meters big water surface, one outdoor and four indoor pools await families wanting to heal or relax. The outdoor pools can be visited during the summer and winter as well.

Demjén Thermal Spa

The hilly landscape of the Demjén Alley must have been created when God was in a good mood. Proprietors imagined and built a Roman bath here. Its medical baths are lighted up at night, which gives it a magical atmosphere. If you can stay up, you can enjoy the bath until 2 am. The well which provides the water for the bath was created in 2006. This is the most recently explored thermal water in Hungary and is 68°C. The bathing treatment can be used for many kinds of locomotor disorders: rheumatic diseases, joint diseases, osteoporosis, before and after musculoskeletal surgeries. It optimises blood circulation and motility.

Hévízi tó

Hévízi tó (lake) counts as a curiosity in the whole of Europe and the world. It is the largest natural thermal lake in the world. Its fantastic composition and the area’s unique microclimate makes the wonder of Hévíz uncommon, which provides a different experience for the visitors each time they return. The lake Hévíz lies on a nature reserve, the marsh, the source cave, and the lake are all protected natural rarities. In the winter a natural inhalatory forms over the surface of the lake where a natural ‘humidity cap’ arises, keeping the water from cooling down. Once everyone must see the beautiful lake in the winter from the bath.

The baths of Budapest on Lonely Planet’s incredible video

Magyarorszagkul.nlcafe.hu noticed a very cool video on Lonely Planet’s Facebook page, which presents the baths of Budapest through amazing shots. The number of views, likes, comments and shares are constantly growing as the video is becoming viral.

The video has been viewed by more than 200,000 people in two days, it has received more than 3.9 thousand likes and more than a thousand comments. These numbers are growing dramatically minute by minute.

The two and half minute long compilation was shared on the world’s N°1 guidebook publisher’s Facebook page, which has 1.7 million followers.

Users tag their friends, acquaintances in the comment section along with comments like “I want to go back”, and “I miss it”.

The footage starts out by stating that the bath culture has always been important in Hungary and that visiting a thermal bath is a great way to get to know the Hungarian culture and history. Not to mention the health benefits.

They first present Europe’s biggest bath complex, the Széchenyi Bath, in the case of which they find it a curiosity that some people play chess on floating boards in the water and that the outdoor pools are also open in winter.

Next up is the glorification of the Gellért Bath, highlighting its architectural value.

“It’s like taking a dip in a cathedral.”

Finally, they invite you for a time-travel to the Ottoman times with a trip to the Rudas Bath. It has an only woman/only man schedule during the week, while it turns into a party hall at the weekends.

The video’s conclusion: it’s no wonder Budapest is frequently referred to as the “spa capital”.

The history of the Turkish baths of Hungary

According to termalfurdo.hu, the 150 years of Turkish rule left deep marks in the Hungarian history. It might sound strange, but the era had positive effects as well, for instance, the spreading of baths, out of which several still function in Budapest and Eger. But how were these built and what was their role? This is the story of Turkish baths in Hungary.

Many contemporary European travelers reported on baths in the Turkish in a praising way, because they were all dazzled by their architectural style and fantastic health benefits. Since the Turks used them for social and clearing aims, they were always built in the centre, close to religious venues like mosques, turbes and minarets. The appropriate water temperature was especially important for them, so they tried to build the baths as close to thermal springs as possible.

Why were they built?

Cleaning baths play a significant role in the Islamic religion. According to the Coran, both still water and running water can be used for this aim. Prophet Muhammad emphasized the role of bathing in potence. Moreover, they believed that the purgation of the soul and body were necessary. Bathing masters and maids helped in the process. Even though the joint bathing of men and women was prohibited, the institutions were the prominent venues of social life. Following the rules, the halls were built in the following order: hot, warmish, cold, dry. All of this was completed with skin and hair care.

The architectural masterpiece

The Turks already had well-developed systems for canalage and heating in the 16th century. The heating of the pool area and other watery halls were provided by the hot thermal water directly from the pools, and indirectly from the walls through clay pipes. When designing steam baths, they also built boiler-rooms and heating furnaces to store cold springwater. The sealing of the pools was ensured by lead plates. But the most eye-catching solution was definitely the cupola-shaped roofing.

The layout always had a tripartition: first came the atrium, then the hall, and the bathing area last. The latter was filled with hot water by wall fountains, the floors were covered with marble, while there were seats along the walls. The pools found in the middle of the halls were usually octagon-shaped or circular. This central position was taken by marble platforms in the hamams.

Changes

The baths built by the Turks were used according to their original function even after the Ottoman conquerors left Hungary, because people realised their health benefits. For instance, they were frequently visited by soldiers, generals, but they were also the beloved venues of political conversations and conspiracies. The 20th century didn’t spare the Turkish baths, but thanks to the restorations they can be visited by anyone in Budapest and Eger. Out of the Turkish baths of Buda six has archaeological marks, out of which four still function as thermal baths (onetime Horosz Gate: Király Bath today, onetime Jesil direkli: Rudas Bath today, onetime Veli beg: Irgalmasok Veli Bej Bath today, onetime Kücsük: Rác Bath today).

The Turkish baths of Eger and Budapest

In the 16th century two baths operated in Székesfehérvér, while there were already three a decade later. Pécs also had three baths from the 16th century. Rüstem Pasha built a bath in Esztergom. Moreover, several Turkish baths functioned in Gyula, Szeged, Szekszárd, Bács, Becskerek, Hatvan and Lippa. Based on the estimations of Balázs Sudár, the Turks built 75 baths during their 150 years of rule. The ruins of the Valide Sultana Bath are under reconstruction in Eger, but if you happen to be passing by, you can enjoy the bath complex built around the onetime bath of Arnaut Pasha.

7 baths deserving more attention

If you visit Hungary, it is difficult to avoid visiting a spa or a bath. Due to the country’s favorable characteristics concerning thermal water, we can find a spa almost anywhere we go in the country. Termalfurdo.hu collected seven of those that are less known, but still worth a visit.

Bihari Termálliget

Bihar Termálliget was renewed a couple years ago, so it has become even more modern and comfortable. The spa offers opportunities for both doing sport and having fun with its different pools, spa and sauna. The most popular part of the bath is the “leventemedence” (“The Pool of Levente”), which was extended by five new pools and several spa services. Bihar Termálliget’s water has been officially announced a thermal water in 1997. The spa receives its water reserves from a well nearby. The thermal water coming up from the ground is 63 degrees Celsius hot. Musculoskeletal diseases can be treated with the water that contains sodium, hydrogen carbonate and silicic acid.

Another hidden gem is Szarvasi Szent Klára Thermal Spa, which awaits visitors all year. The bath provides various pools and wellness services for its guests. Pools of several heat rates can be found in the bathing complex like a thermal pool (36 degrees Celsius), a medicinal pool (36-40 degrees Celsius), a swimming pool (28 degrees Celsius) and a whirlpool bath (32 degrees Celsius). Wellness, fitness and alternative medicine services can also be enjoyed there.

Swimming Pool of Bükkszékfürdő

Swimming Pool of Bükkszékfürdő is also one of those bathing spots that does not get the attention it deserves. Multiple types of pools and thermal baths await the visitors, along with a 136-meter-long slide. It is the perfect place for both resting and healing. Pools with medicinal water, a swimming pool, a fun pool and a children’s pool can be found in Strandfürdő.

Near the Slovakian border, you can find Lipót Thermal Bath with lots of swimming and thermal pools, slides and sport opportunities. The bath was renewed in 2002, and it has become one of the most modern complexes in Hungary. Two thermal pools, a beach pool with four slides, a children’s pool, a fun pool and a medicinal pool await guests there. The atmosphere of the bath is enhanced by the creek, the watermill, and the small island. Visitors may also try mini-golf, beach volley ball, mini soccer, cableway, playground and table tennis. The medicinal water eases musculoskeletal, rheumatic and inflammatory symptoms.

Kristályfürdő in Ajka offers an enormous water surface of 1700 square meters with 6 fun pools all year. The bath was renewed in 2006, thus becoming a true adventure land for the whole family. Several programs, wellness treatments and various sports are available in the park.

Lenti Thermal Spa and St. Georg Energy Park

Lenti Thermal Spa and St. Georg Energy Park provides seven indoors pools. Saunas and steam rooms await inside, while a beauty farm and massage services can be found upstairs. The outdoors area consists of five additional pools and a 74-meter-long slide. The biggest pool of the bath is 1340 square meters large. The world-famous medicinal water of the spa can be applied to musculoskeletal diseases, arthrosis, as well as spine and back problems.

Not too far away from Lake Balaton lies Marcali Local Town Spa and Leisure Center in a large park. A swimming pool, a children’s pool, thermal pools and medicinal pools serve the needs of visitors on a 50,000 square meters large territory. There are great opportunities for refreshment in saunas, steam rooms, cold diving pools and a jacuzzi. Those who prefer active resting may also find their luck there: four tennis courts, two beach handball and volleyball courts, and a basketball court can be found in the leisure center.
