Coronavirus in Hungary

Breaking – government cuts quarantine period!

Gergely-Gulyas-government-info
Hungary’s government has decided to shorten quarantine periods for people who test positive for Covid, the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.

Adults will be required to self-isolate for a seven-day period and will be allowed to leave quarantine after five days if they are symptom-free and produce a negative Covid test, Gergely Gulyas told a regular press briefing.

Unvaccinated primary school children in grades 1-4 will be required to quarantine for five days if a positive case is confirmed in their class,

he said, adding that they will be allowed to take part in classes online while in isolation. Otherwise, in-presence education will have to be uninterrupted, he said.

About the referendum and the election Gulyás said that the government welcomes the decision to hold the general election and a referendum on protecting children on the same date. That is because it will save 7 billion forints (EUR 19.6m), the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.

Gergely Gulyás told a regular press briefing that it was a rare occasion to have consensus among all political parties on an issue. He thanked opposition Párbeszéd lawmaker Tímea Szabó who had originally proposed holding the election and the referendum on the same day.

Gulyás said hugely important issues were at stake in both ballots, and the government asks everyone to express their opinion not only in the general election but also in the referendum.

French, Serbian handball players dissatisfied with Hungarian Covid rules

The players gave short interviews to French newspaper Le Figaro, and just like last summer, the football players complained about their hotel and Hungarian Covid rules, so did handball players now.

Covid regulations and problems

Several members of the French national handball team were outraged by the local epidemiological rules after arriving in Hungary. Three-time Olympic and four-time world champion Nikola Karabatić, who was chosen as the best player in the world three times, complained that after Christmas and New Year’s Eve, time that they spent separated from their families (to prepare for the European Championship and not to catch Covid), they had to mix with unmasked guests in their hotel in Hungary where they could not even get separate meals from the other guests.

The goalkeeper of the national team, Vincent Gérard, was surprised by the Hungarian situation, compared to the measures of the two big 2021 handball tournaments, the Tokyo Olympics and the Egyptian World Cup. “It’s not necessarily respectful to players and staff members who really tried their best and worked really hard to arrive in a healthy condition,” reports hvg.hu about what the player said.

Federal Captain Guillaume Gille expressed a similar position of how he did not find it acceptable that there was such a difference between the rules of the international federation and those of the host country. However, Kentin Mahé, the French player of Veszprém, was not surprised by the Hungarian situation: “Knowing Hungary, I was not surprised. We know that the Hungarian government will make decisions later than its neighbours. Why? I don’t know, I’m not a politician.”

Last year, the French footballers also complained to the media

This is the second time in a short span of time that French teams came to Hungary because of the European Championship and did not like something. Last summer, the national football team was dissatisfied with the accommodation in Budapest as it was not luxurious enough for them.

That time, Hungary played a draw against the French team. You can see our article about the game in the Puskás Arena Budapest here:

At the Hungarian-Slovak European Handball Championship, the French Olympic champions will be grouped with Croats, Ukrainians, and Serbs and will play all three matches in Szeged.

The Serbian coach on Twitter

Toni Gerona, the Spanish coach of the Serbian team, also complained. He wrote a Twitter post stating that the Hotel’s guests are in the same area as the players, the teams were not tested on time, several players have already become infected, posing the question: how could they play like this?

The Handball Association replied

The Hungarian Handball Association (MKSZ) responded to the objections of the French national team in a statement. They are stating that the European Championship is organised according to the regulations of the European Handball Association (EHF).

“Delegations from all participating countries have already visited the four-star hotels in the autumn, and no problems have been raised since then. In addition, the current legislation and the Covid protocol required by the EHF have been known to everyone and are being followed in the host countries,”

they write. MKSZ also adds that the organisers of the European Championship provided detailed information to the teams and gave thorough answers to all the questions that arose, which were accepted by everyone.

“We are puzzled by the statement of the French and Serbs. If there are still legitimate needs in the future, we are able and willing to settle them, and the appropriate contacts are available,”

says MKSZ, according to Telex.hu.

The Euro Championship starts on the 13th of January. There are three locations in Hungary: Budapest, Debrecen, and Szeged. The largest new handball arena in Budapest was recently completed, you can read more about that here.

The Szeged Arena was also completed recently. Pictures HERE!

Lucky African country receives 400,000 vaccines from Hungary

Hungary is donating another 400,000 coronavirus vaccine doses to Ghana, bringing the total number of doses donated to other countries to 3.8 million, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Facebook on Wednesday.

Last November, Hungary donated 800,000 vaccine doses to Ghana with a view to helping the country speed up its vaccination drive, Szijjártó noted. The current donation will be delivered to the West African country on Friday, he added.

A total of 2.5 million of the vaccine doses Hungary has donated to other countries has gone to Africa, the minister said, noting that the pandemic situation on the continent was critical.

Hungary is fortunate to have enough vaccines in stock to vaccinate everyone three times over and still be able to help other countries in an effort to prevent the emergence of new virus variants, Szijjártó said.

Hungary is the refuge of the world’s circus performers – PHOTOS, VIDEO

Hungary circus performers

The Budapest Circus Festival started today and ends on 17 January. Monday marked the “zero-day”, world-known Czech circus performer Pavel Valla Bertini broke a world record in unicycle. Before, State Secretary Péter Fekete, said that the world’s circus performers “fled” to Hungary. That is because circuses closed everywhere due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, they remained open in Hungary.

Circus performers come to Hungary

As fnc.hu, the official website of the Budapest Circus Festival and the Capital Circus of Budapest, says, the world’s circuses shut down when the pandemic broke out. The only exception was the Capital Circus of Budapest.

The management of the Capital Circus of Budapest took a bold step: several times a week, it entertained the audience with live broadcasts,

giving hope and faith not only to them but to all those working in circus arts as well. More than a hundred Hungarian circus artists performed in the show of four different themes named ‘Dynasties’ in the Capital Circus of Budapest. The premiere performances of the plays of ‘Dynasties’ of the Capital Circus of Budapest were held online” – they said.

They highlighted that the world started to pay attention to Hungary because the only functioning circus was there. The Budapest circus was in line with all epidemiological measures in force. At the same time, they could entertain the Hungarian audience, which provided work for their artists.

New unicycle world record set in Budapest

According to telex.hu, Pavel Valla Bertini, Europe’s number one unicycle performer, broke a record by riding 17 unicycles. First, the director of the Capital Circus of Budapest appeared on stage. Dr Beáta Borsós said that the new world record would mark the opening of the Budapest Circus Festival (11-17 January). He added that the original idea came from Péter Fekete, State Secretary for Culture. The former magician not only manages the sector as a member of the government but also creates performances in the circus.

Mr Fekete said that the world’s circus performers think about Hungary as a refuge.

That is because circuses closed everywhere due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, they remained open in Hungary.

After him, acrobat students came, followed by Pavel Valla Bertini. He performed tricks first on one unicycle, then sat on a 17-wheeled one. He was not only able to sit on the structure without falling but could also cycle around on it in the arena.

Omicron spreads shockingly fast in Hungary

Coronavirus Szent László hospital
Altogether 67 patients died of a Covid-related illness during the past 24 hours, while 7,883 new coronavirus infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Wednesday.

Fully 29 percent of new infections have been caused by the Omicron variant, official data says. However, we reported HERE that Neumann Labs said the new variant was present in 78 pc of their samples at the beginning of January. This rate was above 60 pc in December.

According to MTI, so far 6,297,101 people have received a first jab, while 6,039,940 have been fully vaccinated. Fully 3,299,569 Hungarians have received a booster jab. The number of active infections has risen to 118,945, while

hospitals are treating 2,758 Covid-19 patients, 257 of whom are intubated on a ventilator.

Since the first outbreak, 1,308,877 have been registered with the virus, while 40,083 deaths have been recorded. Fully 1,308,877 people have made a recovery.

Eduline.hu reported today that the number of infected skyrocketed in elementary and secondary schools. In some Budapest schools, all students are home and take part in online education. In another school, students and teachers produced 50 positive tests last week. Therefore,

no open days will be held in the schools in January and February. But the Educatio fair will be organized.

The trend of the growing number of new infections started in December. Since the inoculation rate of the students is not high enough, the omicron variant spreads quickly among them. A third of the 5-18-year-old students received one, and a quarter of them two jabs. For teachers, the state prescribed obligatory vaccination. As a result, 780 teachers left the education system since they refused the jab.

Chief medical officer: Omicron variant currently accounted for 29 pc of new infections in Hungary

hospital coronavirus

The chief medical officer has strongly recommended that everyone should receive a third, booster jab against Covid, and argued that protection would decrease 3-4 months after the second shot.

The jabs are available at vaccination points and from general practitioners, Cecília Müller told a press conference on Tuesday, adding that residents could choose from five kinds of “effective and safe” vaccines.

Müller welcomed the results of recent vaccination campaigns, in which people could receive the jab without prior registration, and said that some 300,000 people received their first shots through the programme. She said that

the aim was to ensure that anyone could get the vaccine “without technical or physical restrictions”.

She also said that the highly infectious

Omicron variant currently accounted for 29 percent of new infections in Hungary.

She said that Omicron caused milder symptoms in general, but warned that “it may not be true on the level of individuals; the gravity of symptoms depends on one’s state of health and their level of vaccination”.

Concerning vaccination of the 5-11 age group, Müller said that the dates originally offered had all been reserved, but a further opportunity would open for them to get the shots on Saturdays.

Müller said that the number of cases “with flu-like symptoms” was low, adding that it was likely that, similarly to last year, there would be no flu epidemic. She noted, however, that flu numbers usually peaked in late January or early February.

12 people received six doses of a Covid vaccine in a Budapest hospital

Vaccination Koronavírus Coronavirus Covid Hungary Vaccine Oltás

Not so long ago, our portal reported that many people wanted to acquire a Hungarian immunity certificate without receiving any vaccine or getting infected with the coronavirus.

In that article, it surfaced that in many cases, nurses or doctors were involved in the fraud and made a lot of money illegally by creating fake immunity certificates.

If you are interested, you can read more about it in THIS article, as well as HERE.

The pandemic has been rampaging through the world since early 2020, and this has put a huge strain on many healthcare workers worldwide. The strain on Hungarian healthcare workers is probably even worse as approximately 40,000 people died from Covid in Hungary.

However, a stressed-out and tired staff leads to mistakes. This is exactly what happened a few months back in one of the hospitals in Budapest.

Multiple doses at once

According to Blikk, approximately 12 people could have received a dose several times larger than the recommended vaccine dose during the previous vaccination period.

24 reported that the incident happened at the Gottsegen National Cardiovascular Centre in Budapest where a staff member forgot to dilute the ampoules of the vaccine they used.

It is important to note that every ampoule contains doses of vaccines for several people and that healthcare workers need to add a special liquid to it to dilute the substance.

However, in approximately 12 cases, this step was accidentally omitted, and a dozen people received six doses of the vaccine.

The National Healthcare Service Centre sent an answer to the inquiry of 24 about the case in which they stated that the necessary measures have been taken and they are continuing to monitor the health of the 12 people who have been affected.

Fortunately, there is no suspicion of any health damage, only the normal reaction to the vaccine.

Other similar cases

The news portal also reported that this was not the first case to have happened. Last May, a GP accidentally gave an entire ampoule of vaccine to a man in Szombathely, but he has had no health complications since.

However, similar cases have happened all over the world, such as in Germany, Italy, Australia, and the US. During their testing, Pfizer studied the consequences of receiving a high dose of the Covid vaccine but have found no signs of health damage.

Public health centre to sue opposition politician for alleged defamation?

Koronavírus Coronavirus Vaccine Vakcina Ampulla Ampoule January

The national public health centre (NNK) said on Friday that it is taking legal action against independent lawmaker Ákos Hadházy for alleged violation of personality rights and defamation.

Hadházy stated in a Facebook message posted on Thursday that he had “filed a criminal complaint for alleged abuse of office and endangerment committed in the line of duty” and attached an image of Chief Medical Officer Cecília Müller to the post, the NNK said.

The context and the post directly imply that he was accusing the chief medical officer of those actions, it added.

The NNK and the chief medical officer have not acted as a licencing authority for the issuance of distribution permits for vaccines, the NNK said.

read also: Secret documents reveal concerns about Sputnik V and Sinopharm vaccines

The distribution permits of “Chinese and Russian vaccines” have been issued by the authority in line with the law and the vaccines have been in use accordingly, it added.

The NNK said Hadházy’s public post had demonstrated “a lack of professional knowledge and ill faith” and had discredited the public health centre, an authority in charge of protecting the public against epidemics. As a result, he has “intentionally misled the Hungarian people”, it added.

The health centre said Hadházy’s actions posed a “direct and severe threat” to epidemiological protection. He has “questioned the professional credibility of those involved and undermined public trust in the methods of protection”, the NNK added.

His statements “strengthened the anti-vaxxer movement” and his attacks have been “motivated purely by political profiteering”, the NNK said.

Hungarian restaurants that fell prey to COVID – PHOTOS

closed restaurant sign

Numerous Budapest restaurants had to close down for good due to COVID-19 and its disadvantageous consequences. In this article, you will find some of the most famous restaurants that no longer feed hungry guests.

Tamás Flesch, the head of HHRA (Hungarian Hotel and Restaurant Association), finds it sorrowful that many popular restaurants had to close their doors in the past few days in Budapest, reports InfoStart. However, he does not fear the mass closure of high-quality restaurants. We wrote about Olimpia, Kárpátia, and Csalogány26 in the past. Now, here are some other dining venues and the reason they had to close since the pandemic reached Hungary.

1. Kádár étkezde (Kádár canteen)

As Index reported in April 2020, Kádár étkezde closed not just due to the COVID situation as it was also up for sale. With its red-and-white checkered tablecloths, soda bottles on the tables, and homemade flavours, Kádár canteen was a favourite for more than 60 years. Over the decades, many artists, athletes, politicians, and media workers visited the place.

2. Soul Food

The place was famous for its home-style, fresh, and affordable exotic food. It was a fast-food restaurant with “spicy, exciting one-dish meals, soups, hamburgers, freshly roasted ribs, chicken wings, desserts,” according to their Facebook page (still available). At the end of April 2020, they posted a picture on their Facebook page, captioning it with “We are closed, again. Wish you the best, guys. Hope to see you once again. ✌️

3. AUM Restaurant

The Óbuda restaurant opened its second unit in the inner city at the beginning of March 2020. Both places aimed for an authentic Asian feel. Dániel Varga, the chef of both units, spent years in Thailand and has a passion for Asian flavours, while he also incorporates local ingredients and nostalgic home cooking in his dishes. When the second unit opened, Style.hu wrote an in-depth article about the restaurant. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic situation, both units have been closed and will continue to remain so indefinitely.

4. Le Poulet

As their official description said, they were a restaurant that served “Fresh, Hungarian premium grilled chicken based on French rôtisserie. Guaranteed quality, recommended by a French chef. Everything that is chicken.” Unfortunately, COVID and the restrictions did not spare them either. Their once-guests still hope they will reopen somewhere sometime in the future.

Hungary receives Sputnik Light for testing

Eighty doses of the Russian Sputnik Light coronavirus vaccine arrived in Hungary for testing, prior to purchase talks with the manufacturer, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Friday.

The foreign ministry quoted Szijjártó as saying that the tests were the next step in Hungary’s and Russia’s cooperation in terms of vaccination against Covid. If Hungarian experts consider the new vaccine safe, effective, and suitable for a booster jab, trade talks will ensue, Szijjártó said.

Szijjártó noted that Sputnik Light was already distributed in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Argentina, and India, while a licence had been issued in San Marino, and it was being licensed in Serbia.

“The more kinds of the vaccine Hungarians can choose from, the better,” Szijjártó said, and encouraged residents to take booster jabs.

Semmelweis rector: fake news = more patients, more deaths

Béla Merkely
The Omicron variant of Covid is highly infectious, and full protection is only provided by a booster jab, the rector of Semmelweis University said on Friday, in Kossuth Rádio’s Good morning, Hungary programme.

Béla Merkely said that a fifth wave is under way in Hungary, caused by the Omicron variant. Due to Omicron’s highly infectious nature, tens of thousands of cases can be expected, but those vaccinated could only experience mild ailments of the upper respiratory tract – a running nose, throat pain and headaches, and fever for a day or two. Those unvaccinated could be hospitalised in larger numbers,

but the proportion of serious cases could stay below that of the third or the fourth wave.

Speaking on M1 television news channel, the expert warned that false news in the media could compromise people’s willingness to get vaccinated thus

contributing to higher case numbers and the likelihood of more deaths, adding that people should only accept information from creditable sources.

Vaccination is the only solution against coronavirus, because it can significantly decrease the risk of hospitalisation, he stressed.

It’s official: the fifth wave started in Hungary, nr of infections rise

Crowd-Gyor-people-hospital

Professor Béla Merkely, the rector of the Semmelweis University, said that the omicron variant is very virulent and can find the smallest “chink in the armour.”

Omicron = fifth wave

According to hvg.hu, Professor Merkely added that the fifth wave of the epidemic started in Hungary. In a Kossuth Rádió interview, he added that the original Vuhan variant of the virus caused the first two waves. Meanwhile, the British were behind the third and the delta behind the fourth waves. The newest,

omicron variant is responsible for the fifth, he cleared.

Authorities detected this variant in South Africa last November. Experts say that omicron is very virulent and can find the smallest “chink in the armour.” However, only non-inoculated people have to be concerned, he highlighted. Those vaccinated struggle only with lighter symptoms like sore throat, fever lasting for a couple of days, and headache.

Merkely said that the number of new infections would rise quickly in Hungary. It might happen that the number of patients will grow tenfold.

The number of people in severe conditions will also increase.

The number of new infections rises unstoppably

International data show that the omicron variant spreads quicker than the previous variants. Based on the calculations of the WHO, its doubling time is 1.5-3 days.

According to MTI, altogether 101 patients died of a Covid-related illness during the past 24 hours, while 6,524 new coronavirus infections were registered, koronavirus.gov.hu said on Friday. So far, 6,278,355 people have received the first jab, while 6,006,178 have been fully vaccinated. Fully 3,217,724 Hungarians have received a booster jab. Where is the EU money provided for Covid testing in Hungary?

COVID-testing-Israel
The Hungarian government has been allocated nearly 900 million forints (EUR 2.3m) in European Union funding to provide “cheap or even free” Covid tests, an MEP of the Socialist-Párbeszéd parties said on Thursday, adding that “we do not know how the government has spent the money”.

István Újhelyi said he would send a letter to the prime minister asking for detailed information, later in the day.

Újhelyi said that the total was part of a 100 million euro package aimed to help EU members provide the required tests to residents in the wake of Covid-related travel restrictions. The EU has also prescribed the purchase price of rapid tests at 13 euros and PCR tests at 40 euros, he added.

The MEP said he wanted to know how much of the 900 million forint total the government has used, and what was its methodology of distributing the tests.
Újhelyi also asked how the government had used 500,000 rapid tests sent to Hungary last spring under another EU aid programme.

Fifth wave arrived in Hungary?

coronavirus in hungary hospital

It seems that the positive trend of the last few months stopped in Hungary. The number of new infections is rising again, while the rate of positivity also grows. More and more patients have the virulent Omicron variant. Furthermore, the reproduction rate of the virus grows, and the amount of the virus’s hereditary material in wastewater increases. As a result, experts say the fifth wave of the epidemic arrived in Hungary.

Number of new infections

According to portfolio.hu, Hungary reported 2,429 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, which rose to 5,270 on Wednesday. That is 77 pc more than a week before. Of course, the previous week’s data might be lower because of the fewer tests done after Christmas. The news website says, however, that the trend is positive again. That means the number of new infections will rise in Hungary again.

Positivity rate

The rate of positive tests is rising in Hungary. At the end of the fourth wave, it decreased to 15-16 pc, but that rose to 19-20 pc. Based on WHO, an epidemic is under control if this rate is below five pc. The above data show that the fifth wave started in Hungary before the fourth wave stopped. The same happened between the second and third waves, as well. As a result, employees of the Hungarian healthcare system do not have a chance to relax and regenerate.

Omicron wave

Everybody agrees that the new wave’s reason is the Omicron, not the Delta variant. The National Public Health Center said it was responsible for 11 pc of the new infections. Meanwhile, Neumann Labs said that the new variant was present in 78 pc of their samples. As we reported, this rate was above 60 pc in December.

Gábor Vattay, a physician professor of ELTE University, said yesterday that in Budapest, the Omicron rate might be around 50 pc. Thus, he added that the fifth wave started in the capital. He cleared that the national rate might be at 25 pc. Today he updated his data: 64 pc in Budapest and 33 pc in the country.

Reproduction number

The so-called R number is rising again in Hungary. At the end of the Delta wave, it went under 1, but now it is above. That means one infected gives the virus to more than one person.

Wastewater

The National Public Health Center said the amount of hereditary material of the virus rose again in the wastewater. The trend was a significant decrease in the last few weeks. The turning point was in the last week of 2021. The tendency shows rise again in Budapest, Eger, Kaposvár and Szekszárd. The amount of the virus’s RNA decreases only in

Summary

Data show that the fifth wave of the virus arrived in Hungary. That means the number of new infections will show a significant rise in the next few days. As a result, there will be a lot of infections, international data say. Although the Omicron spreads quicker, international experience shows it does not cause as severe symptoms as the Delta did.
