Cave Bath of Miskolctapolca renewed – PHOTOS

Renovation work has begun at the cave bath of Miskolctapolca. This has resulted in the closure of the bath, along with its medical units and aqua-therapy facilities, between 22 January and 1 February. The cave bath will be re-opened on 2 February. But not all entertainment has stopped in the caves: a special trip can be taken in the tunnels during the renewal period.

The Cave Bath in Miskolctapolca is a unique phenomenon in Europe, according to its MEK page. It is a natural indoor pool, which provides the opportunity to bathe in the thermal water that is bursting up from the depths of the mountain, accompanied by the freshest and cleanest air available. The bath is also famous for its medicinal effects, which are related to the climate and the warm water.

Miskolctapolca can easily be accessed from the city of Miskolc, either by car or bus, not to mention the bicycle track for more athletic visitors. The path can also be taken on foot alongside Hejő creek.

Visitors can admire the winter scenery from the warm outer pools (as visiting outdoor baths is a popular activity in Hungary even in the cold season) or enjoy the summer sunshine on sunbeds, or if the weather gets too hot, the tunnels of the cave provide shelter. Besides the pools, saunas and medical therapies are also available. The micro-climate of the clean blue water, the scenery and the useful services contribute to the refreshment of tourists.

The Cave Bath is currently under renovation: all the equipment and the tiling will be repaired. The crew is cooperating with alpinists, who check the stability of the cave’s rock walls. The medical units will be renewed with fresh paint and new massage beds.

On 27 and 28 January, the management of the Cave Bath has organised so-called “dry feet” trips through the tunnels of the cave, according to Hirado.hu. Visitors could roam among the stalactites in waterproof boots, exploring the unique and mysterious caverns.

The trip took about 45 minutes, during which visitors could even see the hidden network of boilers and pipes and the other mechanisms used during the operation of the bath. Even the unfinished tunnels could be visited.

The Cave Bath will re-open to the public on 2 February.

Trams of Miskolc to be auctioned off on the internet

The Miskolc City Transport is auctioning off the Tatra trams online, hvg.hu reports.

“The trams were made between 1986 and 1990, they measure 30 metres and 38 tons, they transport 300 people at once, and they’ve run 1-1.5 million kilometres, but they are exceptionally reliable even today,“ reported the Intergavel Ltd., the organiser of the auction.

“Similar trams to the ones to be auctioned off are or were in operation in many Czech cities, as well as Kosice, Pyongyang, Sarajevo, Moscow, Volgograd, and Strasbourg,” said Csaba Kocsis, head of Intergavel Ltd.

According to Kocsis, it would not be surprising if the trams were bought by a foreign bidder. It is also not rare that the tramcars are used as catering units, children’s playhouses, or in other capacities which differ from their original function.

Intergavel is offering most of the trams for 25-50 thousand euros, but some can be purchased for 8 thousand euros as well.

Canadian bloggers gushing about Miskolc

The Canadian Feather and the Wind travelling couple – Felicia and Wesley – visited Miskolc in December. Turizmusonline shows some videos and photos about their experiences.

The blogger group started to explore the world based on the saying “you only live once”. They visited Mexico, Japan, France, Germany, Poland and many other places. They think that travelling is cheaper than many think. They make their dreams come true and collect several happy memories via travelling.

11 things were emphasized on their blog about Miskolc. One of them is the Miskolctapolca Cave Bath which enchants everyone by its wonderful atmosphere and natural cave pathes.

When visiting the Diósgyőr Castle they could get to know a historic castle where the world of the Middle ages becomes alive.

According to them, travelling to Lillafüred by the little train is a picturesque must-see. In one of the titles of their videos they compare their trip to Lillafüred to a fairy-tale and they advise everyone travelling to Miskolc to see Palotaszálló with a walk next to the Hámori Lake.

They found the taxodiums, the interactive and playful places, and the photo exhibition Inverse Everest (until the 15th January) of the Pannon Sea Museum amazing. The photo exhibition shows the expedition to the deepest caves available with dry feet.

They gush about the old streets of the downtown. They think that going on a sightseeing tour in the city of Miskolc is a great idea, because the streets of the inner city are for pedestrians only.

They did not forget about the Hungarian local dishes. They emphasized the typical Hungarian cousins: fish soup, stuffed cabbage and goulash soup. While they suggest Kis Anna Halászkert and Kispipa Halászcsárda for those loving the Hungarian kitchen, A Leves gastro workshop and Reinpold’s KOLbice, which is famous for its sausage ice cream, are suggested for the fans of modern gastro experiences.

The blogpost of Filicia and Wesley can be found here.

Miskolc builds postcard wall

The touristic organization of Miskolc would like to attract tourists by encouraging them to present their own settlements with a postcard. They can give them to any Tourinform offices or Infopoints, and in return for it, they get a Miskolc postcard, travelo.hu wrote.

The touristic institution starts the collecting of postcards during the Becherovka Miskolc Jelly Carnival. It is planned that the special postcard wall – which will be built out of these – will be set up in June, but they collect the postcards all year round. The goal is that more and more people share their favorite programs, restaurants and accommodation in Miskolc and the things they liked the most.

According to travelo.hu, the postcard wall will connect settlements and experiences by the end of the year. The guests can present their own hometowns on the postcards and their Miskolc experiences on the gift postcard.

The statement of the touristic organization says that Hungary’s “biggest offline touristic social media channel” can be born and it can keep the Miskolc experiences for decades. You can read about the project here.

Péter Jakab faction leader of Jobbik in Miskolc vehemently asked not to hire models and friends but people who are ready to take up the confrontation with criminals or offices.

Roma To Protest Against Plan To Bulldoze Miskolc Slums

(MTI) – Members of the Roma community in the north-eastern Hungarian city of Miskolc plan to hold a demonstration on June 25 in protest against a recent local council decree on the elimination of slums on the outskirts of the city, which “discriminates” against their community, a local Roma leader said on Thursday.

Gabor Varadi, president of the Roma National Self Government of Miskolc, told a press conference that they had asked Prime Minister Viktor Orban in an open letter “to help resolve the mounting crisis.”

The city council approved a ruling Fidesz-KDNP-sponsored decree on dismantling “ghettos and slums” in Miskolc which aims to make the city safer and more liveable.

Under the decree, the city council offers tenants of buildings regarded unsuitable for human habitation 1.5-2 million forints (EUR 4,900-6,500) to help them purchase better homes outside the city.

The open letter says that “the text of the decree avoids labelling the Roma collectively, but in statements by local politicians the Roma are made to appear as potential threat and a security risk.”

The Roma community sees “a real threat” in reactions triggered by the decree, namely that several other towns and cities in the area of Borsod County have made strong statements rejecting the affected inhabitants of Miskolc.

Varadi said they were asking for the prime minister’s intervention to ensure that the city council seeks to resolve the issue in cooperation with the Roma and not against them.

The demonstration is planned to be held in front of the city council on Wednesday afternoon, he said.
