Budapest is among The Huffington Post’s Top 50 cities to see

parliament budapest

The Huffington Post has recently made a list about the Top 50 cities to see in your lifetime, and one of them is Budapest. The Post emphasized how colourful Budapest’s night life is, and how wonderful its baths are, welovebudapest.com reports.

The Huffington Post made a list to collect the top 50 cities which they have already written about, but got lost among all the other posts. According to the writers, every ruler has left his mark on Budapest, and that makes the city incredibly colourful, not to mention its busy night life and great thermal baths which make Budapest an ideal destination for tourists.

Venice got the first place, Seville is the second, and New York City became third, but several other metropoleis are on the list, such as Paris, Rome, and Athens, but there are further cities from the United States, Asia, and Africa as well.

Here’s a photo gallery of the must see places in Budapest.

These are the best universities and colleges in Hungary

Semmelweis University has ranked first on HVG’s newest higher education list (again), and there’s no change in the second place either; however, the third institution came as a big surprise, writes eduline.hu. HVG’s Diploma 2016 is already out, listing more than ten disciplinaries and forty programmes.

According to HVG’s 2016 higher education list, the Semmelweis University (SE), Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the National University of Public Service (NKE), the University of Szeged (SZTE), and the University of Pécs (PTE) are among the best universities in Hungary based on their professor-and student excellence.

HVG took several features into account when composing the list, such as the number of people who chose the university as their first option when applying, the average score of those who were accepted, the number and type of language exams people had, the number of first year students who had excellent rankings during their high school years in different competitions, the number and proportion of professors with an academic degree, the student-professors with academic degree ratio, and the number of professors with an MTA title.

Rank Institution Professor excellence (rank) Student excellence (rank)
1. Semmelweis University (SE) 4. 4.
2. Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) 7. 3.
3. National University of Public Service (NKE) 6. 5.
4. University of Szeged (SZTE) 5. 7.
5. University of Pécs (PTE) 3. 11.
6. University of Pannon (PE) 2. 17.
7. University of Physical Education (TE) 7. 13.
8. University of Debrecen (DE) 13. 8.
8. Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE) 16. 5.
10. Corvinus University of Budapest (BCE) 21. 1.
10. Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) 21. 1.

If the institutions are put into order according to the number of students they have, then the first ten universities make up almost ¾ of the student population, which indicates the role of these universities in the Hungarian higher education. Among the ten universities, five of them especially stand out; individually, these institutions have an enrollment over 10.000, and make up half of the total student population: the University of Debrecen, Eötvös Lóránd University, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the University of Szeged, and the University of Pécs.

Forbes list of 10 richest Hungarians

Forbes list of richest Hungarian people was published. There is no big surprise in the lead, if not that Sándor Csányi is even richer than it has been calculated so far, szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu wrote.

The Singapore interests of OTP bank’s leader have not been calculated into his assets so far. He keeps HUF 64.5 billion in his fund called Sertorius there, at least Forbes could find this.

The total assets of Csányi are worth HUF 287.9 billion which means he entered the club of US dollar billionaires, that is, for example he is on the list of Forbes World Billionaires, even if just at the end.

This is interesting because his fortune was estimated at “only” HUF 159.5 billion, but Forbes calculated nearly the double of it with the growth of assets and the money of the Singapore fund a year after.

Where is the increase of wealth from? Csányi was involved in the sale of TriGránit, which was a huge business; he also had big income from real estate market, while he became an important actor of the energy market. But what hit really hard that he gained unshakable positions in the agriculture by the acquisition of KITE. KITE had HUF 230 billion revenue last year, it is no wonder that László Bige (whose assets are mainly from fertilizer production) – who is third on the list of Forbes – left no stone unturned to get the company, szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu wrote.

Another curiosity is that Lajos Simicska is now the 6th on the list.

Here is the list:

1. Sándor Csányi HUF 287.9 billion
2. György Gattyán HUF 165.4 billion
3. László Bige HUF 157.3 billion
4. Sándor Demján HUF 155.6 billion
5. Gábor Széles HUF 125 billion
6. Lajos Simicska HUF 112
7. Tibor Veres HUF 107 billion
8. Lajos Kasza HUF 92.8 billion
9. György Waberer HUF 81.3 billion
10. Tamás Rákosi HUF 78 billion

The spring’s list of napi.hu:

1.Sándor Csányi – HUF 165 billion (+15 bn compared to 2014), finance, real estate, agriculture
2. László Bige – HUF 160 billion (+15) chemical industry, agriculture
3. Gábor Várszegi – HUF 115 million (-15) investments
4. Sándor Demján – HUF 93 billion (+1) finance, real estate, investments
5. Gábor Széles – HUF 92 billion (+4), contract manufacturing, tourism, media
6. György Gattyán – HUF 90 million (-45), information technology, media, film, fashion
7. Tibor Veres  – HUF 85 billion (-1) real estate investment
8. Tamás Rákosi  – HUF84 billion (+5) media investment
9. György Wáberer  – HUF 80 billion (+7) transportation, logistics, Financial Services
10. Lajos Simicska – (?) HUF 73 billion construction industry, media, agriculture

Three Hungarian cities among world’s most popular ones

pécs

One of the world’s largest accommodation meta-search engines has published this year’s top 100 list. There are three cities among the most popular destinations as well: Pecs, Gyor and Szeged, hvg.hu wrote.

The three Hungarian cities are included in the first half of trivago’s top 100 list. In fact, Pecs, which is the county seat of Barany and was European Capital of Culture in 2010, is among the top performers with the 8th place. Gyor became 43rd and Szeged became the 50th.

The list established under trivago’s Best Value Index considers three factors: the average accommodation prices of the given city over the past year, the assessment of the accommodations (a minimum of 150 assessments are required for a city to be on the list), as well as the number of accommodations (at least 50). By comparing the average price and the accommodation assessments, the best value for money destination are included on the list.

According to hvg.hu, trivago’s Best Value Index combines the site’s Hotel Price Index with the Reputation Ranking of the accommodation. The former shows the average accommodation prices of the world’s most popular cities for one night or for two people. On the top 100 list of Best Value, towns getting the highest per cent on the basis of average price and the visitor’s assessment are included.

Trivago has been launched on the basis of a German company in just 10 years, it has 45 platforms and more than 80 million users.

Hungary slips to 63rd place in global competitiveness ranking

Budapest, September 30 (MTI) – Hungary has slipped to the 63rd place in the latest ranking of 140 countries based on competitiveness compiled by the World Economic Forum.

In the report released on Wednesday, Hungary fell by three places (the report included 144 countries a year earlier).

On a scale of 1-7, Hungary’s overall score edged down to 4.25 from 4.28 a year earlier.

Hungary reached higher scores in the category of health and primary education, the macroeconomic environment, higher education and training and technological readiness.

The lowest score was in innovation followed by institutions and business sophistication. Among efficiency enhancers, the country also received a low, 3.9 score on financial market development.

Hungary reached its highest ranking in the infrastructure category (48th) and the lowest in institutions (97th).

Hungary was preceded in the ranking by the Czech Republic in 31th place, Poland in 41th place and Romania in 53th place, but was ahead of Slovakia, in 67th place. These regional countries in contrast to Hungary saw a rise in their rankings.

4 Hungarian universities are on the World University Rankings’ list

Szegedi Tudományegyetem

There are four Hungarian universities on the latest (2015/2016) list of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), which was released on Tuesday. The first place is occupied by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and it’s followed by Harvard, and Cambridge.

Among the Hungarian universities, the University of Szeged had the best ranking, according to the composers of the QS Ranking; it got placed to 501-550, improving a couple of places since last year. Eötvös Lóránd University’s and the University of Debrecen’s place did not change; both of them are 601-650. The Corvinus University of Budapest also stayed in the 701+ category.

Quacquarelli Symonds, a London based company, has been composing world university ranking lists yearly since 2004. They are considering six aspects when making the list: the student – teacher ratio, the number of foreign students and teachers, the opinions of the employers, how frequently their works are quoted, and how their academic achievements are regarded by others.

Institue 2015 ranking 2014

University of Szeged (SZTE) 501-550. 551-600. 501-550. 501-550. 551-600.

Corvinus University of Budapest (BCE) 701+ 701+ 651-700. 551-600. 601+

There’s not much change regarding the first couple of places; they are filled with universities from the United States and Great Britain. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) got first place for four years in a row now, and is followed by Harvard, and Cambridge.

Stanford, Oxford, the University College London, the California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, ETH Zürich and the University of Chicago are among the bests as well. To everyone’s surprise Princeton and Yale could not make it to the top 10.

Hungarian Restaurant Is Among the Best

One of the world’s best publications of bar, restaurant and hotel design is Night Fever. The 560-page yearly publication provides a comprehensive view of the world’s best and most beautiful bars, restaurants and hotels. For the first time, a Hungarian place is also on the list, ZONA Budapest in Lanchid Street, Buda, Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu said.

Just like the previous releases, this book is a must for those who would like to watch the prominent participants of the profession and follow the latest trends. This is the fourth year the publication is issued, and it digs deep into the design conception of the world’s best catering units and provides insight into the unique vision of the creators.

From bijou bars and small restaurants through the multi-storey clubs to the luxurious hotels, the publication divides the world’s bests into three parts main parts: “drink”, “eat”, “sleep”. More than 130, in the last three years made interiors can found in the book, which were designed by so renowned studios as Estudio Campana, Marcel Wanders Studio, Ministry of Design and Positions collective. Exhaustively, the publication collects the designers and the address and contact information of all the displayed bars, restaurants and hotels.

Although the Budapest bar, restaurant and hotel design also took a huge turn in the past few years, new, internationally recognized places are opening from the shadows of the ruin pubs, there has not been ever a Hungarian place in the publication of Night Fever., Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu says.

10900063_784845598247775_5150908000116824360_oZONA Budapest is the first Hungarian restaurant which could appear in the book. All of this due to the outstanding culinary performance and the thoughtful design conception which perfectly connects cuisine and interior.

ZONA is a casual fine dining restaurant which combines top gastronomy with everyday slack. In the center, there are not the main dishes but the smaller portions. “The name ZONA expresses two features: one hand, it refers to the exciting two “zones” split interior that is at once a wine bar and a restaurant; the other hand it refers to the nature of the served food, which is served in zone portions, well-known in Hungary earlier” – read on the ZONA website.

The kitchen is led by Krisztian Huszar who is inspired by beside the reinterpreted Hungarian cuisine the Eastern and the Basque kitchen as well. ZONA also places great emphasis on wines: more than two hundred Hungarian and foreign items can be found on the wine list.

10603511_713628878702781_3295924281067721350_nAccording to Szeretlekmagyarorszag.hu, the design is the work of POSITION Collective involved in spatial and object design and visual communication, who mainly wanted to make see clean-reliance, spontaneity and functionality in the background – epiteszforum.hu said. Key elements of the interior are the rugged wooden furniture which revived the 1950s designed by the famous British designers Tom Dixon and the Wild Spirits. The drink wall is unique, made of hot-rolled steel sheets, and the special lights are retro spheres reminding of grapes, made by the Szarvas lamp factory. A Hungarian professionalist provided them unique cupper sockets too.

Best Hotel of Europe Is in Budapest

According to the users of TripAdvisor, the fourth best hotel in the world is the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest, which is the best in Europe. They adore the staff, the rooms and the location too, Travelo.hu says.

The 2015-favorites of the TripAdvisor users have announced: on the list of the world’s best hotels, Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palaces became 4th and won the first place on the list of the European hotels, overtaking places such as the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Shanghai or the tarnished London The Milestone Hotel.

By the way, Gresham Palace only was the 23rd best hotel in the world 2 years ago. And why so much love from guests? ‘It is exactly as a fantastic hotel should be. The rooms, the staff, the location…everything is perfect!’ – writes a user.

According to Travelo.hu, on the top of the list, there is Gili Lankanfushi Maldives holiday resort, which is located over the turquoise water. Not surprisingly, Hungary’s best large hotel is Gresham, and Baltazar became the best small one, which opened in the Varkert, Buda in 2013 summer.

How Happy Is Your Country? Find out on this map!

Are Hungarians really as discontent as the stereotypes say? Happy Planet Map, an immense survey helps us finding the truth, hvg.hu reports.

The project’s aim was mapping the ”happiness-index” of every single country, summarizing the given answers of each nation and creating a map which features the extent to which people are happy in a given state. Of course, the outcome should not be taken too seriously, as the answers were all very subjective and the actual full picture might be far from the one displayed by Happy Planet Map.

The data had been given by answers to questionnaires, so the ”happy” countries are those, whose residents answered that they are very happy in their countries, and those who were the least content with their residence, are the people of ”unhappy” countries, accordingly. The criteria of a happy country also includes the expected life span, the ecological footprint, and the standard of living and sustainable development.

Costa Rica ranked first, Columbia second, and Vietnam is the third happiest country in the world. Hungary conquered the 107th place, which does not seem very pleasant, but if we consider, that Hungary overtook the United States, this rank seems quite impressive. However, if we go into details, it seems that the stereotypes about the pessimistic Hungarians are true: they ranked their happiness in their country on the average of 4.7 (out of 10), while Americans seem to be much more content with their 7.2 rate.

It was the difference of the ecological footprint that resulted in Hungary overtaking the U.S.

If you are interested in the project, visit their website HERE.
