Day one of Australian Open: Hungary’s Fucsovics beats 13th ranked Shapovalov

FUCSOVICS Márton australian open

Despite billing itself as the summer Grand Slam, the Australian Open was brought to an abrupt halt by rain on day one of the tournament on Monday.

With Australia in the grips of a horror bushfire season and record-breaking drought, the change of weather was not unwelcome, but did force the cancelation of a number of fixtures.

Matches on outside courts were suspended as rain hit Melbourne Park at around 3 p.m. local time, while the drawcard contests, hosted on the indoor stadium courts, continued.

Among those progressing to round two were Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Caroline Wozniacki and local favorite Ashleigh Barty.

Earlier in the day, reigning women’s champion Osaka beat the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova 6-2, 6-4, kicking off her campaign for a second consecutive Australian Open title.

Osaka said she hoped to remain focused and not let the hype of playing for back-to-back titles get the better of her.

“There’s no reward for being a defending champion and you just have to go into it with the mindset that everyone wants to beat you and it’s going to probably be tougher the second time around,” the Japanese told reporters.

Osaka will be joined in the second round of the women’s competition by Serena Williams and Wozniacki, who also won their first round clashes.

Williams made short work of Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 6-0, 6-3, while Wozniacki – who is playing in her final tournament before retirement – beat American Kristie Ahn 6-1, 6-3.

In the men’s draw, veteran Federer topped Steve Johnson from the United States 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, and Greece’s Tsitsipas dispatched Salvatore Caruso 6-0, 6-2, 6-3, despite a late fightback from the Italian.

Seven-time Australian Open winner Djokovic progressed with a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory against Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff at the Rod Laver Arena.

“It’s great to be back in this arena that has a very special place in my heart,” Djokovic said in a post-match interview.

“This has been by far my most successful court in my career and I love coming back to Australia, the land of tennis.”

Local hopeful and women’s World No. 1 Barty had the home crowd on edge after losing the first set against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, but she dominated the remainder of the contest with a final score of 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

One of the day’s surprises was a deja vu win for China’s Zhang Shuai, who staged a dramatic comeback to topple U.S. competitor Sloane Stephens 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

The scoreline was eerily similar to that at the 2018 Australian Open, when the two women met in the first round, on the same court, with Zhang also triumphing after dropping the first set, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.

Another shock was the departure of 13th ranked Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who went down to Hungary’s Márton Fucsovics 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6.

The hot-headed Canadian youngster exchanged words with the umpire after receiving a code violation for slamming his racquet on the ground. He claimed that there was no violation if the racquet did not break, though the umpire maintained that it was still an infringement.

“The rule [according to] what I know is that if I break my racquet, you can code me,” Shapovalov said in a post-match interview.

“But you can’t code me for slamming it. I’m not doing anything and it didn’t impact anyone and the racquet was still intact.”

Hungarian tennis star Babos wins WTA Finals for 3rd time in a row!

Tímea Babos – along with her doubles partner Kristina Mladenovic – defeated Hsieh Su-Wei and Barbora Strýcová to win the WTA Finals in Shenzhen, China, for the third time in a row.

As reported by nemzetisport.hu, this feat has not been replicated since 1998, when Lindsay Davenport won the doubles tournament for the third consecutive time.  The result means that the Hungarian-French team have a 100% success rate (2 out of 2) in winning the final of this event. Babos won the final in 2017 with Czech player Andrea Hlaváčková.

Babos and Mladenovic got off to a flying start by breaking the serve of the Taiwanese-Czech duo at their first opportunity. Su-Wei lost her round of serving as well, meaning Babos and Mladenovic wrapped up the fate of the first set in 25 minutes by winning it 6-1.

The second set proved to be more difficult as Babos lost her serve. However, the Hungarian-French pairing redeemed themselves by breaking Su-Wei-Strýcová straight away. The set appeared to be balanced at 2-2, however, a set of impressively won points by Babos-Mladenovic seemed to have mentally defeated Su-Wei-Strýcová; the Hungarian-French team were able to break once again.

Babos-Mladenovic were able to hold their serve for the rest of the games. They eventually won the set 6-3, winning the whole match in 64 minutes.

This was Babos’s third win, second with Mladenovic. In addition to Lindsay Davenport and Babos, there are only 8 players to have been able to win the WTA Finals doubles tournament three times: Martina Hingis, Liezel Huber, Lisa Raymond, Cara Black, Natasa Zvereva, Billie Jean King, and Betty Stöve. However, she still has a way to go to catch 10-time winner Pam Shriver and 13-time champion Martina Navratilová.

Last week, the Hungarian U-17 national football team topped their Euro qualifying group. The new Puskás Arena has been sold out for its opening game against Uruguay.

What a sports moment! – Hungarian Tímea Babos wins Roland Garros!

Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic won the women’s doubles competition at the French Open 2019 tennis championship, after defeating in two sets the two Chinese opponents of Sunday finals, Duan Ying-Ying and Saisai Zheng.

During the first five games, the audience could see a balanced competition with smooth serves by both tennis teams. However, in the sixth game, Babos successfully obtained serve from Duan and scored an advantage of 4:2. Soon, Zheng also lost the rhythm of the game, while the Hungarian-French duo played more and more comfortably, as a result of which they took advantage of the first set ball in the 33rd minute.

Babos and her partner successfully maintained their winning position for 2:0; however, Mladenovic unexpectedly lost her serving. Soon, another break came, and the Hungarian-French duo managed to take the lead by 4:1 thanks to Babos’s fantastic serves. Later on, the Chinese pair came up for 4:2; however, Babos and Mladenovic continued their winning streak and successfully won the competition with 6:2 in the first set, and 6:3 in the second set.

As the Hungarian news portal 24.hu describes, the 26-year-old Tímea Babos realised her 22nd tournament victory in doubles; this is her second Grand Slam triumph, and she was the first Hungarian female player who won two GS title in pros category.

Besides the golden trophy, the Hungarian-French duo was rewarded 580 thousand EUR (186 million HUF).

“Congratulations to the opponents, and thanks to Kiki for her partnership and friendship. Every day we play together seems like playing in the finals” – said Babos, who also expressed her gratitude in Hungarian for the support of her family and fans.

The winning duo will get to the top of the WTA doubles world ranking – Mladenovic will occupy the first place, followed by Babos in second place.

Amazing! Adrienn Nagy makes Hungarian tennis history during the Australian Open!

hungarian sucess, tennis win

The Australian Open takes place every year in Melbourne, in the last two weeks of January. This year, Hungarians can be excited as the just 17-year-old Adrienn Nagy was crowned champion in the Junior Girls’ Doubles category, along with Nacumi Kawaguchi.

In the final on Friday, the Hungarian-Japanese duo defeated the American Chloe Beck-Emma Navarro duo in two sets, both ending in 6:4. The sets were similar in that the American pair lost the games twice, while Nagy and Kawaguchi only gave up one game -reports NlCafe. The match lasted for 61 minutes altogether.

This is a significant event in Hungarian sports history as no one managed to win the cup in junior tennis in 19 long years.

In 2010, Tímea Babos made it to the finals with Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, but they lost the match. Before that, the same thing happened to Ágnes Szávay and the Czech Nikola Frankova in the final in 2005.

It was in 2000 that Anikó Kapros secured the win in Junior Girls’ Doubles category, along with Australian Christina Wheeler. That year, the Junior Singles’ title was also taken home by the Hungarian Kapros.

This year, Adrienn Nagy also entered the Junior Girls’ Singles category but did not get past the third round. Nevertheless, she did a great job in the doubles category and proved to be a graceful winner when accepting the trophy:

Tímea Babos was also there at the Australian Open this year. Babos and French partner Kristina Mladenovic made it to the final but lost to Australian Samantha Stosur and Chinese Shuai Zhang in the end.

What happened to Hungarian sports? – Scandal about the Hungarian Tennis Association

Tennis Association Scandal

The Prosecution Office of the 9th district ordered an investigation into the Hungarian Tennis Association because they found the accusation of one of the member associations valid. A case concerning incompatibility might have drawn the attention of the authorities.

The Prosecution Office of the 9th district of Budapest ordered further investigation because of the suspicion of an offence of malpractice causing significant financial loss – says a report from the Prosecution office, which hvg.hu got hold of. The investigation will be executed by NAV (National Tax and Customs Administration of Hungary). As far as we know, it is a management issue, and one of the member associations filed the complaint.

The Prosecution office found the accusation valid after a discovery of information that causes much concern.

Part of the controversy is that, since April 2017, the Tennis Association publishes neither the decisions of the board nor the public benefit reports, so it is not possible to get information about certain decisions. This is particularly important because 22 million Euros (7 billion Ft) worth of state finance has gone into the sport recently. It might not be a coincidence then that 4 out of the 7 board members resigned from their positions.

We only know a few pieces of information concerning the case. A new company headed by one of the Association’s managers has been established, and the Association transferred 3.2 million Euros to the company to execute a task.

Lots of people have criticised the Association lately,

among them were some of Hungary’s best tennis players, Tímea Babos and Márton Fucsovics included.

Márton Fucsovics spoke out on Facebook, according to zoom.hu. The most shocking part of his writing is when he talks about how three weeks before the Davis Cup, no one has contacted him about it. He said that “I only think that they want me to play because they have been promoting the event with my face for weeks. I do not want to disappoint anyone, but I can hardly imagine myself playing against the Czechs.”

He also wrote that he feels like something has broken. “I stood up for my partners and the team because, in my experience, the Association does not give the acknowledgement that is due for the sportsmen and for the coaches who prepare them. I expressed that the conditions and the atmosphere are not suitable for further successful performance.”

Amazing! Tímea Babos is once again a World Champion tennis player!

Babos WTA

The Hungarian tennis star Tímea Babos competed alongside the French Kristina Mladenovic against the Czech Barbora Krejcíková and Katerina Siniaková at the WTA Finals. Nemzeti sport writes that the Hungarian-French duo beat the Czech duo for 6:4, 7:5 at an 86 minutes long match.

WTA World Championship, Singapore – Duo, Final

Krejcíková, Siniaková (Czech, 1.) vs Babos, Mladenovic (Hungarian, French, 2.) – 4:6, 5:7

Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic competed against the world champion Czech duo, Barbora Krejcíková and Katerina Siniaková at the duos’ final round at the WTA. For the Hungarian tennis player, this was the second world championship she competed in, while for the French Mladenovic it was the first.

Their biggest moment as a duo in this year was a win at the Australian Open, but they made it to the US Open finals too.

At the final match the world’s best duos were competing with one another: the two Czech players are at a tie on the top of the duo world raking list (they have won this year both the Roland Garros and the Wimbledon tournaments), while Babos and Mladenovic are the second bests, at a tie with each other.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/timea-babos-becomes-first-hungarian-world-champion-tennis/” type=”big” color=”orange” newwindow=”yes”] Tímea Babos is actually the first Hungarian World Champion in tennis[/button]

Both duos started off the first round extremely focused, scoring 3:3, but after only 24 minutes, Babos managed to take over the Czech serve, thus the Hungarian-French duo had the upper hand with 4:3, eventually ending the first set with 6:4 after 36 minutes.

In the second set it was Babos again who broke the 2:2 serving score, despite the fact that she made a grave mistake as well during this round. The Czech duo grabbed the opportunity, and almost immediately took back the lead from the Hungarians, by reducing Babos’ serves to zero. Nemzeti Sport writes that the Czechs focused their attention on breaking Babos, though her partner never failed to support her.

Babos almost hit the tennis legend, Billie Jean King, once, who was sitting in the front row.

While Mladenovic was serving, Babos had time to get her game back on, and at 5:5 she almost singlehandedly took Siniakovás serving. Thanks to this, the French tennis star was now competing for a world champion title.

With the third match-point (5:7), Babos defended her title, earning her second world champion title in women’s duo.

The winners’ awards are 250 thousand US Dollars and 750 points on the world ranking list each, while the losers earn 130 thousand US Dollars and 540 points.

Tímea Babos – the first World No. 1 in Hungarian tennis history

You might have already heard of Tímea Babos, who is the best Hungarian female tennis player of the last few years. It has become official: Tímea Babos is also the first Hungarian tennis player to become WTA Doubles World No. 1, 24.hu reports.

Tímea Babos keeps writing tennis history: first, she became the first Hungarian world champion in tennis, then she triumphed at the Australian Open, and now, she managed to become WTA Doubles World No. 1.

Babos and her partner Kristina Mladenovic won 14 matches in Wimbledon 2018, and they only lost two so far. However, regardless of the outcomes of Wimbledon 2018, Tímea Babos will become the World No. 1, because the second-best Andrea Sestini Hlavackova – Barbora Strycova double lost. Babos knew that the only way she did not get the title was if Hlavackova wins.

In an interview with Nemzeti Sport, Tímea Babos said that she tried not to pay attention to what others were achieving, but she focused on herself and her partner. She also emphasised in the interview:

“The World No. 1 title was not handed to me by others; I managed to get it with years of hard work.”

Photo: www.facebook.com/BabosTímea

She also mentioned that so far, she has always managed to achieve every goal she and her coach set for her, let that be the WTA finals in Singapore, the Australian Open or the World No. 1 title right now.

In another interview with wtatennis.com, Tímea said that

“We set this goal this year that, after winning the Singapore Masters last year, I would like to have a Grand Slam title and the world No. 1 spot in my pocket. Here I am having both at the moment.”

She also said that she is incredibly happy and thankful that she managed to get the title. She also mentioned that she feels capable of achieving big things with different partners, as she won in Singapore and at the Australian Open with two different partners. She also told during the interview with WTA:

“The Grand Slam title was waiting for itself. I had a couple of finals behind me, so to finally get that title, especially with one of my best friends on tour, it was extraordinary (…) I have a feeling that I keep writing history all the time with having the Australia Open title or the masters title, or I was holding the highest career ranking also before, and just to be No. 1 is, of course, very special.”

She thinks that the people at home are delighted and supporting, even though Hungary is not a typical tennis country.

Amazing! Hungarian win at the ATP Tennis World Tour after 36 years

Fucsovics Hungary tennis

Márton Fucsovics gained his first ATP World Tour title on Saturday, beating German Peter Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-2 at the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open, ATP World Tour and Index.hu report. Fucsovics is now within the Top 50 of the ATP world rankings with 250 points.

Huge achievement

Fucsovics was the first Hungarian player to even get to the ATP finals in 34 years.

He also has been the first Hungarian to claim the ATP World Tour since 1982, when Balázs Taróczy was able to claim the same title in Hilversum 36 years ago.

Taróczy won the same tournament in Geneva 38 years ago, in 1980.

As World Title winner, Fucsovics gained 250 points, and he is now No. 45 on the ATP world rankings. He also earned EUR 89,000. He is the first Hungarian to be within the top 50 of the ATP world rankings since Taróczy, who was world No. 12.

The match

The match between Fucsovics and Gojowczyk lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes. Fucsovics managed to stay much more relaxed, calm and concentrated, while his German opponent made quite a few mistakes, which Fucsovics was able to take advantage of.

Fucsovics dominated proceedings from the beginning to the end. Fucsovics dictated the play throughout. He never faced a break point and converted on four of his own. An immediate break to open the match set the tone. In the second set, the German player became more focused, but he could not handle Fucsovics’s serves. As ATP World Tour reports:

“Fucsovics’ serve was an impenetrable force, as he conceded just two points on his first delivery and earning 78 per cent of total service points – to Gojowczyk’s 50 per cent. He would streak to a set and a break lead and celebrated the title on his first championship point. Chair umpire Fergus Murphy overruled a serve initially called wide, giving Fucsovics his sixth ace of the match and the title.”

Fucsovics claimed his trophy to the music of Star Wars, and he gave a speech worthy of champions:

“I really love Switzerland! Last year, I played my first ATP quarter-final in Basel and now I won my first title here, so it’s really special for me. We’ve been working a long time for this. The last two years were very hard for me in my life, but hopefully I will have a very long career after this.” (ATP World Tour)

He also congratulated his German opponent, and he thanked his team, family and friends for their support.

LMP blasts Margaret Island tree cutting for tennis stadium

margaret island margitsziget budapest

Green opposition LMP has slammed the cutting of trees on Budapest’s Margaret Island (Margitsziget) to make way for a tennis stadium to be built there.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, LMP lawmaker Antal Csárdi said authorities have started cutting down trees on the island despite President János Áder having recently sent back a law on the construction of the stadium to parliament for reconsideration.

Csardi said he will submit a public data request to the National Sports Centre and the Hungarian Tennis Federation for the release of their contracts with the government and the organiser of the ATP tennis tournaments.

József Gál, an LMP member of the City directorate, noted that earlier in the spring, parliament had approved a law that would have enabled the construction of a tennis stadium as high as 27m on Margaret Island without taking into consideration construction, environmental protection or flood protection regulations. However, the president returned the law over the absence of the necessary impact studies, he noted.

Gál insisted that the authorities had not obtained the necessary permits to start preparatory works for the stadium.

Tennis court being built on Margaret Island

babos tímea tennis budapest

The government acted surprisingly fast regarding the question of the new tennis court on Margaret Island. They passed the bill allowing the construction within only a couple of days, as HVG reported.

The whole process took only a couple of days: the National Assembly decided last Monday about the voting on Tuesday concerning the new bill about constructing a tennis court that can provide a venue for even an international championship. The issue was urgent because of the upcoming Hungarian Open ATP World Tour tennis contest.

The constructors must make haste, as the law that makes the building possible expires on 31 December 2019.

The new complex will be built on Margaret Island in Budapest. The tennis court is meant to be suitable for hosting an “ATP 500” type championship and the international matches of Davis Cup.

But even more than the expiration of the law, another factor makes the construction urgent. Gazprom Hungarian Open ATP 250 will be hosted in April 2018; then the clock starts ticking for one year during which the tennis court must be built. The bill is mostly required for speeding up the public procurement. The fastest process involves the invitation of three bidders among which the cheapest contender wins the opportunity. Though the bidding itself is not open, its documents will be available for the public, as it is written in the bill.

However, the bill contains some quite radical points, such as the “municipal might transfer its right for the property in its possession to the state without competition” and “the ownership might be transferred to the state for free”.

The path from bill to law took roughly 24 hours.

The tennis court in Margaret Island received a legal green light. The representatives of the Parliament decided about the vote on Monday, they held it on Tuesday, and the law was introduced by Tuesday afternoon.

The complex will be designed to satisfy the needs of international sports events. The estimated territory of the building will be around 14,500 square meters, and its height will be 26 meters.

It will be one of the most challenging sport complex projects in Hungary as it will be even taller than the Groupama Arena.

The law provides right for the constructors of the auditorium to ignore the regulations concerning parking in Budapest. They also do not have to comply with rules regarding the protection, cutting and replacement of trees, which meant to preserve the famous green areas of Margaret Island.  Demolition, earthwork and deep foundation are neither restricted to a license in this particular case.

Hungarian tennis player gives Federer a tough time at Australian Open

At the Australian Open, 25-year-old Márton Fucsovics battled with the famous Swiss tennis player Roger Federer on 22 January, 24.hu reports. Federer won 6-4, 7-6, 6-2. Even though Federer reached the quarter-final without dropping a set, he said that Fucsovics played very well, clean and solid.

American Jim Courier, former World No. 1 professional tennis player winning four Grand Slam singles titles (two at the French Open and two at the Australian Open) interviewed Roger Federer after the match:

“I thought he [Fucsovics] played very well. Look, it’s fast conditions, you’re going to have quick ideas and execute them well. I thought that he did that very well.”

Federer claimed that the 25-year-old Hungarian tennis player gave him a tough time in the first two sets.

“I think being two sets down is never easy. You might make some mistakes eventually, but I thought that he was playing very clean and solid, bit of everything. Serving, volleying, chipping. It was good to see. Only in the third set did I start to pull away. I had a hard time breaking through until two sets to love and a break. That’s when I started to feel that I got the win behind my back, but it was tough until then.”

The always refined Federer wished his opponent all the best in the future:

“Credit to him [Fucsovics] for playing a great tournament, that’s what I told him on the net, and I wish him all the best for the rest of the year.”

Courier and Federer’s interview is worth listening to until the end, as the two have quite a funny and entertaining conversation.

At the moment, Márton Fucsovics is resting in Australia, but supporters can see him play in person at the Hungarian Challenger Open starting 3 February. Tickets can be purchased on the tournament’s website.

Tímea Babos becomes the first Hungarian World Champion in tennis

Hungarian Tímea Babos and Czech Andrea Hlavácková won the women’s doubles WTA Finals held in Singapore, thus Tímea became the first Hungarian World Champion in the history of tennis.

According to nemzetisport.hu, Babos already made history when she qualified into the semi-finals, as no other Hungarian player had done that before. Andrea Temesvári made it into the quarterfinal in 1984 and 1985 (singles), just like Tímea Babos did in 2015 (women’s and mixed doubles), but Timi was the first to qualify to both the semi-final and the final.

Their opponents were the Dutch Kiki Bertens and the Swedish Johanna Larsson, who dominated the first set. But Babos and Hlavácková took over the lead in the second part of the second set, won an important break point, which resulted in winning the whole set.

Photo: MTI

Then came the super tie break, one of which the opponents had already won at the WTA Finals. However, they started out quite bad, while Hlavácková played very well at the net (3-0). Then came a minibreak and several winner points, which led to a final score of 10-5.

“We were able to turn the match around; I am very satisfied with our performance. We showed in the super tiebreak how great we were this year” said Tímea after the match.

For that matter, Tímea Babos won’t continue her career with Andrea Hlavácková. She will soon announce who’s going to be her partner from the next year.

Young Hungarian tennis player dies after a victorious match

Borsonline.hu writes that Tamás Tihanyi, a young tennis player from Gyula, recently passed away without any premonitory signals. There were no signs of the 23-year-old athlete’s incurable disease.

On the day of his death, the young player of the Gyula Tennis recreational Sport Club, Tamás Tihanyi played a victorious match in the national cup. It is believed that after the success, he travelled to Budapest to visit one of his best friends, but he never returned. He died in his sleep due to sudden cardiac arrest after 10 pm. Allegedly the reason behind the tragedy was an incurable disease, which didn’t have any premonitory signals.

“I trained with him for 4-5 years when he was a kid, I made him love tennis. He was an everyday guest at the tennis court, but he also loved to play basketball and football.

He was a good-hearted person, a real team player who always had a kind word”

said the president of the club, Béla Vincze, who also added that the boy had big plans with his life.

“He already had a diploma in pedagogy, and he went on with his second diploma this year. He was preparing for a specialised translator exam, and he also wanted to attend a tennis coach course to help with the second line athletes of our club.”

The tennis player who was quite successful in the Gyula region is mourned for by his parents and two siblings. His funeral was held last Friday in the Calvinist Cemetery of Gyulavár.
