Recently, the European Commission decided to protect a traditional, special Hungarian product: lumpy cottage cheese. The material arguing for the case was compiled by the Milk Interprofessional Organisation and Product Board.
According to Turizmus Online, this type of protection is only awarded to products that have traditional ingredients or a traditional process of production. They can only be made with the pre-determined traditional ingredients and/or traditional preparation procedure.
Hungarian lumpy cottage cheese has a pleasantly sour yet fresh and juicy taste. It has an aromatic smell, and it clumps together into loose lumps resembling cauliflower. These lumps are preserved all throughout the procedures of portioning and packaging.
There are several traditional meals, for the preparation of which it is essential to use Hungarian lumpy cottage cheese, which is a basic ingredient of Hungarian gastronomy.
Hungarians use it for making salads as well as desserts: cottage cheese pancake, cottage cheese pie, cottage cheese cake, cottage cheese strudel, cottage cheese pasta, pogácsa with cottage cheese, and so on. These dishes are not only delicious and diverse, but they are also filling and relatively healthy.Â
The Milk Interprofessional Organisation and Product Board expressed their gratitude toward the Minister of Agriculture and the experts of the Ministry of Agriculture for their accommodating cooperation throughout the entire process with the European Commission.Â
