Hungarian Govt. launches new support program to help couples conceive - Hungary

The government aims to ensure that people who want to have children are given all possible support, not just financial, but aid for health interventions for people struggling to conceive, too, a government official said on Friday.

Bence Rétvári, parliamentary deputy state secretary of the ministry of human resources, told a press conference held ahead the “Natural Child Blessing” conference in Budapest that many potential parents faced not only financial obstacles to conception but health barriers, too.

This is why the government is providing 70 million forints (€ 195,000) each year in support of the Catholic Charity’s “natural conception” project, he said.

The methods involved have been tried and tested in other European countries and the United States, and the project provides similar spiritual and lifestyle guidance to help infertile couples, he added.

Government: Hungary will continue to resist pressure of ‘LGBTQ lobby’

Bishop Zsolt Márton of Vác County, who is chairman of the family committee of the Hungarian Catholic Episcopal Conference, noted the charity has been coordinating the project that provides a mix of family planning and medical aid for infertile couples since 2018.

Norbert Vajda, the Catholic Charity’s head, said the aim was to bring planned children into the world. Much of the problems and stresses of modern-day living can be addressed through health awareness and by ensuring proper professional help is made available, he said.

Heritega transport services started on one of the most beutiful tram routes of the world

tram

Vintage trams will be operating every weekend untill 31 October on the route of tramline 2 in Budapest.

From Saturday, 25 September, heritage vehicle enthusiasts can ride on board brown-coloured tram 611 renovated to its original condition, while on Sunday, yellow tram 2806, characteristic of the 1960s and ’70s, will be in service. Thereafter, trams will depart Saturdays and Sundays every hour between 14:08 and 18:08 from Közvágóhíd terminus, and between 14:37 and 18:37 from Jászai Mari tér. The route along the Danube was selected as one of the 10 most beautiful tram rides in the world by National Geographic Magazine as it features several admirable monuments, such as the Parliament, the bridges spanning the river as well as Buda Castle along with Gellért Hill.

Heritage transport services have been available in Budapest since 2009.

According to BKK, historic trams form an integral part of the Hungarian capital’s cityscape and the characteristic vehicles frequently appear in guidebooks and touristic articles, and they often decorate souvenirs. Last weekend on Car-Free Day, the general public had the chance to look at heritage trams exhibited at Deák Ferenc tér: more than 10 vehicles were on display starting from a more than 100-year-old, wooden-framed vehicle to the most modern, low-floor CAF trams. Passengers will be able to enjoy travelling on the vintage vehicles from 25 September until the end of October.

Heritage transport services are popular with families with small children as well as with foreign and domestic visitors alike.

Historic vehicles are more than a simple transport service: they offer „time travel” and also make public transport more loveable and fun. The selected crews comprise drivers and conductors (inspectors) who enjoy talking with and informing passengers about the old trams whilst doing their jobs. Riders can punch their tickets or even ring the bell of the 100-year-old tram at the terminus, if that strikes their fancy.

Heritage transport single tickets or daily travelcards are required for using the services.

Tickets can be obtained on site from the crew or in advance at the usual BKK sales points.

Bloodcurdling details! Hungarian mother stabs her own baby to death in Italy – 18+

Baby Child Victim Family Black adn White Crime Abuse

We have previously reported about the brutal murder of a two-year-old child by her own mother who took the toddler away from his father. Since the incident, more information has surfaced about the murderous mother’s past and the details of the inhuman homicide.

One of the saddest details about the merciless killing is probably the fact that the father has tried to take custody over the child several times before, but according to the father, the court always believed the mother.

Tamás Gaudi-Nagy, Katalin’s lawyer, said that Katalin was convinced that little Alex was in danger with his father, so she had previously asked to stay away from him.

When the father has finally succeeded in getting a warrant for the child to live with him, the mother took off and travelled to Italy, where she eventually murdered her own child with tremendous brutality.

The father recalled that his partner hated the child from the first moment. He recalls her punching her own stomach and taking pills to cause miscarriage, and even after the child was born, she called the boy an “idiot hyperactive gnome”. Still the mother would not let the father have the baby.

The Italian investigators are trying to piece together the last moments of the innocent child’s short life:

  • Katalin said to the Italian police that she had arrived for vacation. When they asked how she had the money for the travel she said that she was working in a furniture store in Budapest but was currently on maternity leave.
  • Bors said that it was found out that before the murder on Friday, the woman was in Chiusi. It is not clear why she visited there, but it is believed that she went there to visit her former employer. She worked there as a dancer and the mother also worked in the porn industry before.
  • On the day of the murder, she took the little boy to the help centre of the town of 8,800 inhabitants. She seemed distraught and without talking to anyone she just left. The employees of the help centre immediately called the authorities.
  • According to the paper’s information, not long after, the police officers asked her on the street, but even though the woman seemed untidy, the boy seemed healthy and their papers were in order.
  • Katalin was next seen on the highway to Po’ Bandino. The following day in a town 1.5 kilometres away, she brutally murdered the two-year-old in an abandoned building in Umbria.

According to Bors, the boy was stabbed 9 times, several wounds were found in his chest and neck.

The mother tries to defend herself by saying that she left the child alone for a moment and when she came back, somebody has stabbed her son to death. But Origo reports that the witnesses and the CCTV footage says otherwise.

Outrageous! Young Hungarian man charged with rape, chaining, human trafficking and slavery

The footage recorded the mother and the little boy walking on the street and losing some of the child’s toys on the way. The footage also contains the moment when the mother steps into the abandoned building with the toddler in her arms.

Another upsetting detail is that after she had stabbed the defenceless child to death, she took photos of the baby’s dead body and sent the images to the boy’s father.

Minutes later Katalin had reappeared at the door and headed for the local supermarket. When entering she cried for help and then placed the dead boy on the conveyor belt. The authorities were immediately called, and the locals tried to help the baby while the first responders arrived.

When the police arrived at the scene, they have found a bloody knife in the mother’s purse. According to Bors, the police report says that blade was broken. They are trying to find out if it broke due to the force of the stabbings.

When asked, the perpetrator Katalin’s own mother, the grandmother of the victim has said that three weeks prior to the animalistic murder, Katalin had threatened to kill her too. “She said she will kick my head in and break my skull and then tell the police that I fell into the tub.”

“To be honest I am afraid of my own daughter” – she added.

Tragedy! Hungarian mother puts her murdered child on a conveyor belt in an Italian Lidl

polizia police italy

The boy named Alex  was only two years old. The woman lives in Siena, but the tragedy happened in a village called Città della Pieve.

A 44-year-old woman walked into a Lidl supermarket in Italy last Friday and put the child on the conveyor belt at the cash register. She wanted to get help for the child, but the doctor who arrived could not help the boy. He died from having been stabbed multiple times, writes 24.hu.

Later, a knife was found in the mother’s bag. She also sent a video to the father about the killing of the child.

The woman had a warrant for “changing the placement of a minor”. The police station of district 13 of Budapest got a report from a man on 29 September that his former life partner took their son to Italy, despite the fact that he got full custody of the child nine days prior to her running away. The police started an investigation, the woman got a warrant, and the guardianship authority was contacted. On 1 October, when the video was sent to the father of the child, Hungarian police started gathering information and data, while they kept in contact with Italian authorities. The woman is charged with homicide.

Index wrote (via RTL) that the mother threatened to put the child’s life in danger half a year prior to the tragedy when she mentioned spilling petrol on him.

From the standpoint of Apák az Igazságért (Fathers for Truth), a non-profit association, the Hungarian police made mistakes along the process. They did not put a warrant on the woman the first time the father made complaints. The police said that at first, they did not have a suspicion that the woman might commit a crime, and they immediately gave out a warrant as soon as the father reported that the child had been taken abroad.

The mother did not seem like a character without spot and stain before the murder, either. She worked in the adult movie industry. A producer known as Kovi did not see anything unusual about her during the time they worked together. “At the time, I did not see anything unusual about her. She did her job, and when we turned off the cameras, she dressed up and went home,” he told Bors. The producer is baffled by the events.

The father of the deceased child told Blikk that he feels sick whenever he sees a child in the streets. “I do not wish my enemy what I am going through now,” the heartbroken father said. He also talked about the mother’s issues.

Norbert met Katalin in an evening school, and she moved in with the man soon after. At first, they had a normal relationship. Katalin said she could not have children, but she got pregnant. The woman, however, was not happy to have a child.

The father said that she hit herself in the stomach and took medicine to cause a miscarriage. Then she just left, and Norbert later found out that Katalin’s first child was taken away from her, and she had had issues with the police before.

She hated baby Alex, but she did not want him to live with his father. She called the boy an “idiot hyperactive gnome”. The father tried everything so that the little boy could live with him, but the court always believed the mother, except for one time, after which she took the 2-year-old child and left. Norbert wants to bury his child in Hungary.

Official: Orbán cabinet committed to building ‘family-centered child protection’

The Hungarian government is committed to “making the country’s child protection system family-oriented”, a state secretary of the human resources ministry told a conference on foster parenting in Budapest held under the auspices of Hungary’s Council of Europe presidency.

In his address, Attila Fülöp said that 23,000 Hungarian children were currently receiving child protection services, noting that 70 percent of them were living with foster parents. “This ratio has never been this high and the goal is to further increase it,” he said.

Fulop said that the government’s aims were to help those who chose foster parenting as a career, and to “recruit helpers” to work with child protection professionals. He noted that foster parenting was recognised as employment in Hungary, and referred to legal stipulations under which children under 12 must be ensured foster parents if possible. He added that 86 percent of the Hungarian children without parents are now under care of foster parents.

Concerning “helpers” to the state system, Fülöp said that the government was primarly relying on the churches, noting that 75 percent of Hungary’s specialised child protection services were offered by religious organisations.

In a letter to the conference, Human Resources Minister Miklós Kásler said that “taking care of needy children is among our most ancient Hungarian and Christian traditions”.

“It is our task to provide human answers to the challenges of the current times and create an opportunity for a decent and full family life; foster parenting is not work but service and commitment,” Kásler said.

Maria-Andriani Kostopoulou, the head of CoE’s committee for children’s rights, who attended the conference online, said that 1.5 million children in the organisation’s 47 member states were living in some form of “alternative” care. She said that family and community care was much better suited to the needs of children than being raised in institutions. She added that the CoE supported that children’s homes should be closed.

74-year-old GP accused of child pornography!

74-year-old family doctor accused of child pornography!

Police started criminal proceedings against a 74-year-old general practitioner living in Balassagyarmat, Northern Hungary. Before, he was accused of forging documents.

According to telex.hu, police searched the home and workplace of the 74-year-old GP in Balassagyarmat in February because of the document forgery case. They seized his computer and cell phone. However, during their check, police experts found pornographic content depicting children on the devices. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the GP not only stored photos but also made some of them.

He was taken into custody on Tuesday, and the court allowed his

pre-trial detention because of the danger of recidivism.

The doctor appealed against the decision.

According to the news of RTL Klub, the police did the house search because they accused him of forging documents. Based on media information, he prescribed sedatives without a medical examination. The doctor wrote then on his Facebook page that the police seized his computer system unlawfully, so he could not continue patient care. Because of the forgery issue, the local government of Balassagyarmat ended his contract, saying that he breached its content.

43-year-old paedophile extorts pornographic content of Hungarian children

At the beginning of August, police arrested a former Jobbik representative of Gyula for obtaining pornographic content depicting children. The karate trainer

not only stored but also took some photos and videos.

Based on the latest news, the court prolonged his pre-trial detention until the end of November.

As we reported before, unfortunately, news platforms all around Hungary report more and more crimes that involve child victims. One of the more recent cases brought to court involves three young victims aged 16, 11, and 9.

The Győr District Prosecutor’s Office indicted a 43-year-old man who had persuaded several underage girls on online chat platforms to take off their clothes.

He secretly recorded the video feeds on his computer and later used the footage to extort even more pornographic content from the victims, Ügyészség reports. According to the indictment of the Prosecutor’s Office, the perpetrator contacted several girls on online chat programs and disguised himself as a teenage boy to seduce underage girls for pornographic content back in 2016. This is how the man came into contact with the three victims, who were 16, 11, and 9 at the time.

After contacting them, he proceeded to earn the young girls’ trust and asked them to send him photos of themselves without clothes, says Kisalföld. The perpetrator, however, did not stop there. Using the images he received, the man blackmailed the victims into stripping naked for him on live video chat, or

he would release their nudes on the internet.

Out of fear the images would go public, the young girls obeyed the perpetrator, who made them pose naked in front of the camera. Unbeknownst to the girls, the man recorded the video calls and later uploaded the footage he acquired to child pornography sites on the DarkNet.

The actor has been following Dotti’s and her father’s sports activities for a long time, and rumour has it that the 2,700 kilos car she pulled actually belonged to the famous actor. “I was stunned, but now I say waking up early was worth it.”- said Dotti.- wrote Bors.

The girl said that Schwarzenegger was very kind, gave her lots of compliments, and said he was proud of Dotti.

“He treated me as kindly as if I were his granddaughter. And people say he’s not an overly direct person, and he only lets few people close. He also complimented my English.” –  said Dotti. She added that she talked to him about everything, and the actor even invited her and her father to the Arnold Classic and his home. Dotti told Schwarzenegger that she likes his donkeys, and he said he would introduce them to the little girl.”

Record 110,000 children in state-sponsored summer camps

lake balaton

A record number of 110,000 children attended state-sponsored Erzsébet camps this summer, the family affairs minister said on Monday.

The camps including the newly refurbished facilities at Zánka and Fonyódliget at Lake Balaton offered a variety of programmes under safe conditions, Katalin Novák told a press conference.

“The coronavirus pandemic has avoided the camps where not a single case of Covid infection has been registered,” she said.

Answering a question, Novak said the Erzsebet camps had been revamped with a 30 billion forint (EUR 86m) state support.

Tibor Hornyák, the director of the Erzsébet Foundation, said that the camps this summer had hosted as many as 4,500 children in foster care.

He was the only person who pulled a 92-tonne plane with his teeth. Their example truly illustrates that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

Tények made a report with a Hungarian girl who trained hard to achieve her goal of setting a new record. Her father oversees her training. The child is under medical supervision, doctors who specialise in sports medicine and dentists check her condition in order to make sure the training does not take a toll on her health.

As Daily News Hungary wrote in another article, Dotti started taking part in her father’s field of sports at the age of two.

The family chose to live in the United Arab Emirates because this sport and similar fields of fitness are highly supported in the country. The 10-year-old kid and her family travelled back to Hungary specifically to set the new record. It was definitely a good choice and a trip made worthwhile!

Dotti recently set a Hungarian and a world record by pulling a 2,700-kilo car with her teeth. Her current weight is only 40 kilos. World-famous superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger also noticed Dotti’s achievements, as his Hungarian friend always transports his with cars that were towed by the Hungarian girl.

Before taking up a demanding sport, it is important to rule out genetic problems and to have medical checkups with a sports doctor.

A teaching assistant at Semmelweis University told Tények that weightlift training is not advised before puberty. She thinks that children can properly prepare for strength tests, but it is necessary that the training is based on working with their own weight and doing cardio. As far as she is concerned, Dotti’s training is appropriate for her age. However, she does not recommend this type of effort or pulling cars.

Hungary is preparing for in-person education

corvinus in person

The government is preparing for in-person education in the academic year starting on September 1, with a vaccination campaign for children over 12 to be held on Thursday, Friday, as well as next Monday and Tuesday, the minister for family affairs said on Tuesday.

Children over 12 studying in public education facilities will receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, Katalin Novák told a press conference after a meeting of the operative body responsible for relaunching community life.

Parents will have to declare whether they want their children vaccinated by Wednesday, she said.

School doctors and nurses will also be involved in the campaign, she added. So far, 5.7 million Hungarians have received the first and 5.5 million both coronavirus jabs, Novák noted. Some 187,000 have already registered for the booster shot, she added.

The government is launching a campaign to provide accurate information on the vaccine, Novák said, and called on politicians of all parties to encourage Hungarians to accept the vaccine.

The government is as yet “not considering further restrictions,” Novák said.

Schools will receive the government’s guidelines on pandemic protection, but will have the freedom to employ stricter methods and to quarantine individual classes if necessary, she added.

Ten-year-old Dotti traveled home to Hungary with his family to set a new, quite unusual world record.

Dotti’s father, Zsolt Sinka is one of the strongest people in the world, he prepares his daughter for rehearsals and competitions. The family has been living in the United Arab Emirates for years because they not only love it there but this sport and similar fitness sports are also highly supported, based on TV2’s Tények Plus (as reported by Origo).

The girl started taking part in her father’s sport at the age of two, she has accompanied and participated in tests since then, causing a lot of surprises.

Zsolt Sinka, the girl’s father said that they are preparing for Hungarian and world records, it is certain that his daughter will be the youngest competitor who is able to perform such wonders:

the girl will atempt to pull a 5 ton car with her teeth.

He also talked about being known in the Emirates and the United States, but less so at home, which he has yet to process. His record is currently towing a 95-ton fire truck, but he’s also trying to break that by pulling a Boeing 270-ton machine.

Justice minister: Government responding to ‘unprecedented attacks by Brussels’

Hungary has been attacked by Brussels “on an unprecedented proportion only because the protection of children and families remains our priority, and in view of this, we are unwilling to let LGBTQ lobby into our schools and kindergartens,” Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Facebook.

The government has responded to “indecent attacks, as well as to the Rule of Law Report of the Commission,” she added in an English-language entry posted late on Monday.

“We have had many disputes with the institutions in Brussels before, however, we have settled them officially by answering all questions correctly, we have addressed all concerns, furthermore, we have always complied with the Treaties.

“We hit a nerve in Brussels only because we consider the protection of children more important than pampering the LGBTQ lobby. So now they’re using all tools, bringing back old debates, thus foisting everything on us,” she added.

Varga said the sources of the report were one-sided and politically biased, reflecting a double standard against Hungary, “thus, its findings are inaccurate”.

“They expect the independent constitutional organs of Hungary to take decisions that the Commission considers desirable in specific cases – regardless of both facts and regulations,” Varga said. “This is an abuse of power by the Commission,” she added.

“The independence, organisation and administration of the Hungarian judiciary have been examined by international fora,” she said. “Based on these, it can be ascertained that the Hungarian constitutional framework is in line with European standards and provides for a wider range of institutional guarantees than those of many EU Member States,” she added.

“We reject the unfounded and politically motivated concerns of the European Commission regarding the fight against corruption in Hungary. Even in a European comparison, a detailed anti-corruption strategy, an effective whistle-blower protection system and strict criminal law provisions apply in Hungary,” Varga said.

Varga insisted that contrary to the European Commission’s assessment, genuine pluralism prevailed in the media in Hungary. “As opposed to the Western European media landscape, which is largely dominated by left-wing and liberal media channels, the Hungarian situation is more balanced, since all political views and directions can reach the public”, he said.

“Contrary to the unfounded concerns of the European Commission, the diversity of civil society in Hungary is evidenced by around sixty thousand civil society organisations established and operating freely,” she said.

“The 2021 Rule of Law Report of the European Commission is yet another tool for political pressure,” Varga said. “It does not present an objective and substantiated picture of the rule of law situation in Hungary or in other Member States of the European Union. This Report cannot serve as a basis for further EU mechanisms or procedures,” she added.

“We condemn the European Commission’s attempts to intervene in the operation of Hungary’s independent constitutional organs and, as Hungary’s representative in the European Union, we reject on behalf of all the bodies involved the pressure exerted by the European Commission as regards the handling of specific cases,” Varga said.

She said she would share the Hungarian Government’s position “regarding such unprecedented attacks” with the institutions and member states of the European Union in different languages.

“Let common sense prevail,” Varga said.

Hungarian man living in Austria charged with child sexual abuse

abuse harassment crime

The Pest County Chief Prosecutor’s Office charged a Hungarian man living in Austria of sexually abusing three minors over the past ten years, as well as of owning child pornography, the office said on Thursday.

According to the charges, the man, who has been living in Austria over the past 20 years, stayed multiple times at the home of a relative in Hungary, and seemingly befriended their child who was under six at the time. The man sexually abused the child multiple times between 2011 and 2019, the charges said.

Between September 2019 and February 2020, the man abused the younger child of the same family on five occasions, and took naked pictures of the child and sent them over a social media site, the charges said.

Authorities have found over 15,000 images of child pornography stored in his mobile phone, the prosecutor’s office said.

In Austria, the man also befriended a Hungarian family and sexually abused their child on multiple occasions between 2012 and 2018.

The man has been taken into pre-trial detention, the office said.

Varga: EC admits its objection is to ‘LGBTQ lobby’ not being allowed into schools

pride-gay-parade-rainbow

The European Commission has admitted that its real objection to Hungary’s child protection law is that the “LGBTQ lobby” is not allowed into Hungarian schools or kindergartens, Judit Varga, the minister of justice, wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

“The cat’s out of the bag,” she said, adding that the commission had initially denied that the problem with the law was its prohibition of the dissemination of all forms of sexual propaganda, including the activities of LGBTQ organisations and activists in Hungarian kindergartens and schools.

But the commission, she said, had made clear in its letter of formal notice that “the problem [with the law] … is that we shan’t allow the LGBTQ lobby into our public education institutions.”

Varga said the commission considered that the ban on education regarding sexual culture, sexuality, sexual orientation and sexual development in terms of promoting different gender identities, gender changes or popularisation of homosexuality violated the free movement of EU services. She insisted that the commission found the fact that this kind of “propaganda” was banned “painful”.

She said the commission’s complaint was that practices that were already established in western Europe were “not possible in Hungary”.

“We don’t allow LGBTQ activists into schools,” said Varga. “Based on all this, I hope the domestic and international press will amend yesterday’s widespread fake news.”

PM Office: Linking child protection law, EU subsidies ‘detrimental’

hungary children camp

The European Union will “come to ruin” if “unrelated issues are linked”, Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, told his weekly press conference on Thursday.

Gulyás said that the EU’s “legally linking” community recovery funds and Hungary’s recent child protection law was “an extremely negative development”.

Gulyás insisted that Hungary was entitled to the funds, but emphasised that being an EU member was in Hungary’s interest.

“There are more arguments for the EU membership than against it.”

Concerning the contested legislation, Gulyás said that the government would not give up its position that sex education was up to the parents, adding that “when Brussels demands equlity in sex education it means that we should allow LGBTQ activists into schools and kindergartens”.

EC climate change plan ‘unacceptable’ in current form

Hungary considers the European Commission’s new “Fit for 55” catch-all climate change plan “unacceptable in its current form”, the prime minister’s chief of staff said on Thursday.

Gergely Gulyás told a regular press briefing that the EC’s plan would make households, rather than polluters bear the costs of the fight against climate change, and would also “destroy” the achievements of the government’s policy of reducing household utility fees.

Hungary is prepared to support a more ambitious climate plan, Gulyás said, adding, however, that most European Union member states were not even honouring the commitments they had made so far.

He also underscored the importance of making climate protection and emissions reduction a global issue.

EC takes legal action against Hungary over violation of LGBTQ rights

The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against Hungary over its child protection law as well as the insistence by the authorities that a children’s book with LGBTQ content should carry a content warning.

The EC sent Hungary letters of formal notice, the first step of an infringement procedure, saying that the two cases concerned violations of European Union rules and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

In a statement, the commission noted that under Hungary’s new child protection law it is forbidden to carry content aimed at youth below the age of 18 portraying gender identity at variance with gender at birth.

It said the legislation was in breach of the EU’s directive on the free provision of cross-border audiovisual media services and contained “unjustified restrictions that discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation and are moreover disproportionate”.

The EC said Hungary had failed to explain why the exposure of children to LGBTQ content would be detrimental to their well-being or not in line with their best interests.

It added that some of the law’s provisions also violated the bloc’s e-commerce directive, namely the so-called country-of-origin principle, as well as the right to data protection laid down in the EU’s GDPR privacy and security law.

The commission said the Hungarian law was in violation of the EU’s principles of the freedom to provide services and the free movement of goods.

The other infringement procedure concerns the consumer protection authority’s decision to oblige the publisher of a children’s book portraying LGBTQ people to include a content warning to the effect that the book depicts forms of “behaviour deviating from traditional gender roles”. The commission said such an obligation restricted the right to freedom of expression and the right to non-discrimination as enshrined in the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The move also violates freedom of expression on the part of authors and publishers, and “discriminates on grounds of sexual orientation in an unjustified way”, the EC said. It added that Hungary had failed to justify the restriction of these fundamental rights or explain why the depiction of LGBTQ content would be detrimental to children’s well-being.

The EC has given the Hungarian authorities two months to respond to its concerns.

Foreign minister: Child protection law doesn’t conflate pedophilia and homosexuality

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has told CNN that reports that Hungary’s child protection law conflated pedophilia and homosexuality were “fake news”.

Asked about strict punishments for paedophilia appearing in the same law as provisions concerning the education of children with regard to their sexual orientation, Szijjártó told CNN the provisions were “two completely separate” parts of the law and were isolated from one another.

Educating children about sexual orientation was the sole right of the parent, he said, adding that the government’s aim was to prevent LGBTQ activists from promoting any particular sexual orientation in kindergartens and schools.

The minister said Hungary’s constitution prohibited all forms of discrimination and no one in Hungary had cause to be afraid because of their sexual orientation.

Put to him that an Ipsos survey in May found that 56 percent of Hungarians thought that same-sex couples should have the same rights to adoption as heterosexuals, Szijjártó said Hungary’s fundamental law stated this clearly.

Szijjártó also noted that the child protection law was adopted not only with ruling party votes but also with the support of the largest opposition party, Jobbik.

He said the assertion that Hungary’s ruling parties were the only forces behind the law was “neither true nor fair”.

The minister also insisted that the law was purely about the protection of children and was unconnected to the 2022 general election.
