Hungarian reality: teenage boy kills 86-year-old man with brick and broomstick— all for cash

An elderly man made the mistake of letting a 17-year-old and his younger brother pick plums in his garden. The older boy spotted a large bundle of cash in the man’s shirt pocket, which, according to the prosecution, he was desperate to get his hands on at any cost. The incident happened back in August last year, but the verdict has just been delivered—though it is not yet final. A mitigating factor was that the offender was a minor.
The motive behind the crime: money for drugs
On 26 August 2024, the teenager brutally attacked an 86-year-old man in his home in Öcsöd, striking him repeatedly with his fists, a metal mixing bowl, a brick, a rake, and a broom handle until the man sadly died from his injuries, according to the Szolnok Court’s statement.
The young offender had accompanied his 10-year-old brother to collect plums from the elderly man’s garden. But when he noticed cash in the man’s shirt pocket, he was determined to take it by any means necessary. The stolen sum of HUF 103,000 (EUR 262) was spent on narcotics, which he consumed shortly afterwards, the statement revealed.

The very next day, the teenager’s own father took him to the police station, explaining that his son had assaulted an elderly local the previous day. Police rushed to the scene but found only the man’s lifeless body.
A crime marked by cruelty and ignoble motives
The Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County Prosecutor’s Office brought charges on 12 August 2025. At the preparatory hearing on 2 October, the accused admitted to the crime and waived his right to a full trial, a move accepted by the court. The Szolnok Court sentenced him to 10 years and 6 months in a juvenile detention centre and banned him from public affairs for 10 years.

The court convicted the young man of murder, citing greed, ignoble motives, exceptional cruelty, and the victim’s frailty due to age as aggravating factors, the authorities reported.
Appeal for leniency
The verdict is not yet final. While the prosecution reserved three working days to decide whether to appeal, the defendant and his lawyer have already appealed, seeking a reduced sentence.

This whole business of reduced liability needs to be stopped with. If you are capable of committing barbarism like an adult, then you are capable of being tried and sentenced like an adult.
This little s… should be publicly hanged for what he did.
