The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI Budapest) hosted a public Bazaar and Cultural Celebration to mark the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The event brought together members of the Indonesian community, Hungarian friends of Indonesia, and the wider public in a festive atmosphere of friendship, cultural exchange, and togetherness.

The celebration began in the morning with a lively bazaar featuring a variety of Indonesian food and products. The bazaar offered visitors an opportunity to experience the flavours of Indonesia while providing members of the Indonesian community with a platform to showcase Indonesian culinary traditions, creativity, and products to Hungarian and international audiences.

The festive atmosphere continued with a series of traditional games involving children, teenagers, and adults. Popular Indonesian games, including marble racing, the pencil-and-bottle challenge, cracker-eating contests, sack races, and wooden-clog races, created an atmosphere of excitement and friendly competition. Beyond the entertainment, the games also provided an opportunity for different generations to interact and strengthened the sense of community among Indonesians living in Hungary.

The Cultural Celebration featured a diverse programme of Indonesian traditional arts and performances. The programme opened with the Mojang Priangan Dance, followed by Angklung instrument, Saman Dance, Rampak Kendang, traditional dances from Maluku, and Pencak Silat. The performances highlighted the rich cultural diversity of the Indonesian archipelago and introduced audiences to artistic traditions from different regions of Indonesia.

The celebration also featured a special batik exhibition by Christina Szabó, highlighting the beauty and cultural significance of Indonesian batik. The exhibition offered visitors an opportunity to discover the artistic richness of batik, its diverse motifs and techniques, and its significance as an important part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. The exhibition also reflected the growing appreciation and cultural connection between Indonesia and Hungary through the arts.

The programme was further enlivened by musical performances by Equalizer and Soroksari Band, entertaining visitors throughout the celebration. The performers had prepared extensively for the event, reflecting the spirit of participation, mutual support, and gotong royong—the Indonesian tradition of working together for a common purpose.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Hungary also officially opened the celebration and visited the various bazaar booths. The occasion provided an opportunity for the Ambassador to interact directly with members of the Indonesian community and participants in the bazaar.

In addition to cultural performances and the bazaar, the celebration featured prize-giving for the winners of the traditional games and a number of door prizes for visitors. The event concluded with the announcement of the Best Bazaar Booth, recognising the creativity and participation of the bazaar exhibitors.

The Bazaar and Cultural Celebration was more than a commemoration of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day. It also reflected the spirit of unity, mutual cooperation, and togetherness among Indonesians living abroad. The active involvement of members of the community in preparing and delivering the event demonstrated that the spirit of independence continues to thrive among the Indonesian diaspora.

Through events such as this, the Embassy in Budapest continues to promote Indonesia in Hungary through culture, cuisine, the arts, and people-to-people interaction. Such initiatives are expected to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and understanding between Indonesia and Hungary.

As the Bazaar and Cultural Celebration came to an end, the spirit of Indonesia’s Independence Day is expected to continue beyond the celebration itself—through solidarity, positive contributions to society, and a lasting love for Indonesia.

Happy 81st Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia!
