A Hungarian court has ordered the pre-trial detention of a man accused of violently attacking a train conductor on a Budapest–Vienna service, before allegedly threatening to kill the railway employee and resisting police officers at Komárom railway station.

The Tatabánya District Court ordered the suspect to remain in custody for one month on suspicion of committing violence against a person performing public duties, according to a statement issued by the court.

Alleged assault began during ticket inspection

Prosecutors say the incident took place on 28 July, when the man was travelling on a train from Budapest to Vienna.

According to the investigation, the conductor asked the passenger to present his ticket. The suspect was reportedly talking to himself before suddenly standing up and striking the conductor forcefully on the head and chest without any apparent provocation.

The conductor retreated into the train corridor, but investigators say the man followed him and repeatedly punched him across the body.

Emergency stop at Komárom

The train came to an emergency stop at Komárom railway station, where the suspect allegedly continued behaving aggressively.

According to the court, he threatened to kill the conductor even after the train had stopped.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the man reportedly shouted aggressively at them and refused repeated instructions to comply. Officers eventually restrained and handcuffed him using physical force.

Court cites flight risk and witness intimidation concerns

The court ruled that the legal conditions for pre-trial detention had been met because the offence carries a potential prison sentence. Judges also found there was a genuine risk that the suspect could flee or go into hiding. According to the court, there are indications that he intended to leave Hungary for an unknown destination before his arrest.

In addition, the court said there were reasonable grounds to believe that, if released, the suspect could intimidate or unlawfully influence witnesses who have yet to be questioned during the criminal proceedings. For these reasons, the court ordered his detention for one month. The decision is final.
