Tragedy: Slovak husband arrested after wife’s body found in Hungary

A missing persons case involving an elderly Slovak couple has taken a tragic turn after authorities discovered the body of a 72-year-old woman in Hungary. Her 77-year-old husband, now the prime suspect in her death, was found alive and is currently in custody.

Disappearance and discovery

The couple, who lived in the Slovak town of Moldava nad Bodvou (Szepsi), were reported missing at the end of March 2025. According to Blikk, for weeks, there was no trace of either the husband or the wife. The breakthrough came when Hungarian police located their car on Hungarian territory. Inside the vehicle, officers found the woman’s lifeless body. The husband was later found in a Hungarian hospital.

Cause of death and investigation

As Parameter.sk reports, according to the Slovak police, initial findings indicate that the woman died from suffocation. Given that the couple was found in Hungary, Hungarian authorities launched the initial investigation. However, the case was soon handed over to the Košice Regional Police Headquarters in Slovakia, where a formal murder investigation was opened.

Extradition and legal proceedings

After being taken into custody in Hungary, the 77-year-old suspect was extradited to Slovakia following a decision by the Budapest Metropolitan Court. He is now being held in pre-trial detention in Slovakia, where investigators have requested that he remain in custody while the case proceeds.

If convicted of murder, the man faces a prison sentence ranging from 20 to 25 years, or even life imprisonment under Slovak law.
