Deer roaming in downtown Budapest – why and where do they come from?

News spread that a vehicle hit a deer in downtown Budapest near Kálvária square (District VIII). People started to wonder what a deer is doing downtown, and many speculate that the animal came from the Fiumei Road Cemetery. A biologist explains why this is not such a crazy idea.

Even though graveyard operators claim that they did not see any deer roaming around the cemetery, they think it possible that some animals wandered in from the wooded outskirts of Budapest due to the decreased traffic in town, 24.hu reports.

Dr Viktor Löki, a biologist from the Centre for Ecological Research, explains why deer can be expected in capital graveyards.

This phenomenon is not new, more significant city parks and graveyards have always been known to attract wild deer and other larger species worldwide. Smaller animals like foxes and badgers may choose such a place as their permanent residence, but larger species like deer are not likely to do that. Deer without a designated territory often wander as far as 10 km from the others.

Another factor at play here is the fact that deer are not that bothered by humans anymore. When traffic is low, usually near dawn, they are likely to roam around cities. Given that there is much less traffic is due to the coronavirus situation, they may roam as far as downtown.

Humans have been living together with several animal species like rats, pigeons, sparrows and flees for centuries. Other animals like boars, foxes, and badgers can often be seen in the outer districts, near wooded outskirts. Furthermore, some even say that currently, at least 30-40 beavers live in Budapest. The urban environment provides these animals with numerous benefits, including easy to find food and shelter, which gives them significant advantages compared to their peers surviving in the wild.

A WWII grenade was detonated on Saturday in an apartment of a 10-story building in Vác, Hungary. The blast broke windows and ripped down a wall. Although there was no fire, the building was temporarily evacuated.

The police have since reported what had happened precisely, wrote Index.

The blast originated from a third-floor apartment’s kitchen, where two men tried to heat up a grenade, they thought was disarmed, on a gas stove. The two men suffered minor injuries from the detonation.

During the inspection of the apartment, police found many weapons thought to be disarmed. These are to be investigated with the help of demolition and weapon experts.

The two men are being investigated for the abuse of explosives.

On March 9th the Counter Terrorist Unit arrested the man, who the grenade was purchased from, in his home in Kóka. His home is also being investigated.

Jackals seen in South-Hungarian city of Pécs

Golden jackal, animal, jackal, Hungary

Foxes and wild boars no longer surprise the citizens of the South-Hungarian city, Pécs as they considered to be the regular visitors from the mountain-region Mecsek. However, another citizen reported that some strange animals appeared in the city, and they did not look like the two mentioned above.

BAMA reported that one of the readers of the online magazine revealed to its editorial staff that golden jackals were seen at Tettye, which is a part of the Hungarian city Pécs in Baranya County. The newspaper reported the case to the Hungarian Wildlife and Haunting Association, and the following summary was given about the case.

Jackal, golden jackal, animal, Hungary

The association reported that they have no information about the whereabouts of golden jackals in the area of Tettye, but they emphasised the possibility that these animals may actually live in the area.

The golden jackal can be easily mistaken for the common fox as the two animals share almost the same look. It does not make any sound while hunting because it would betray its location, but when it does, it can be heard miles away. Jackals do not settle down at one place, and sometimes they can be seen inside the areas of villages and towns.

Experts stated that the golden jackal is harmless to people.

Golden jackals appeared in the southern part of the country in the 90s in Baranya and Somogy Counties and their number increased rapidly. They adapt to any kind of natural features and climate and stay away from people. Jackals are medium-sized omnivorous mammals of the genus Canis, which also includes wolves and the domestic dog.

The golden jackal is similar to the gray wolf but is distinguished by its smaller size, lighter weight, more elongated torso, less-prominent forehead, shorter legs and tail. Males measure 71–85 cm in body length and females 69–73 cm. Its most common portrayal is related to the ancient Egyptian god Anubis who wears a jackal mask.

These are the weird habits of Budapest locals

széchenyi bath chess

Budapest is one of the most popular European capitals among travellers. Hungarians, like any other nation, have their unique habits and behaviours that outsiders may find highly unusual or just plain weird. These quirks are things that make our world colourful and fun, and they should be celebrated more often.

The Culture Trip collected five unusual traditions that no one but the locals of Budapest can understand.

Clearing Out Day (lomtalanítás)

When it’s clearing out time (time varies according to districts), the whole city becomes a garage sale without the garage. Residents are only allowed to put their no longer wanted stuff (like furniture, clothes, etc.) on the streets for a limited period of them (otherwise, the city would become a junkyard. During this clearing out, anyone can take the stuff from the streets for free. Lomtalanítás literally means “getting rid of junk.”

Santa Speedo Run

Santas in speedos take over the streets of Budapest in mid-December. People have been celebrating the arrival of Christmas and raising money for charity at the same time since 2004. The Santas collect money for a different charity each year by running 3.5km through the centre of the city in the freezing cold.

St. Stephen’s Day fireworks

If you like fireworks, you need to visit Budapest on the 20th of August, when we celebrate the Christian foundation of the state. The first Hungarian king Stephen I was crowned king of Hungary in 1000, which marks the foundation of our country. In honour of this day, organisers go all the way with the fireworks. These are set off from the middle of Danube so that they are in the middle of the city above the Danube, and that is how people from both sides of the city can get a clear view.

Carnival Doughnuts

The carnival season arrives in Hungary during February. There are celebrations all over the country: people dress up in costumes and dance the cold away while eating traditional carnival food, like donuts! Doughnuts might not seem so strange in themselves, but there are a bunch of myths surrounding them. Click here for a great recipe and to learn more about the carnival doughnut.

Playing chess in thermal baths

Budapest is the capital of thermal water with dozens of amazing historic baths. One thing that travellers often find odd are the chess boards that can be found in almost every one of these baths. Locals like a little brain exercise while they are relaxing their bodies in hot water. It is customary for old friends (or enemies) to challenge each other to a friendly game of chess.

WOW! You can now buy a secret KGB-bunker in Hungary for only 372,000 EUR!

Secret KGB bunker Hungary

It is near the thermal power station of Inota (Várpalota, Veszprém county) and it costs only 125 million HUF (372 thousand EUR). Its existence was kept secret for decades because the KGB, the Soviet secret service, used it before.

The power plant was built with the help of Czechoslovak engineers between 1950 and 1954 as the first big industrial investment of post-war Hungary. However, in time, it grew old, so without the needed technological development, the ageing of its equipment and working mechanism became inevitable. Since it polluted its environment badly, the government started to dismantle it in 1999. The process was slow; for example, the plant finished its operation only at the end of 2001.

Of course, near the power station the state built blocks of flats, kindergartens, schools, community centres and even a beach heated by the steam of the Inota thermal plant.

Furthermore, here is Hungary’s biggest military object, a shooting range used by the Soviet and later by the American troops. It is 45 km long and 2-15 km wide. But there are some other buildings, as well, which were kept in secret during the Socialist era

so even those who lived near it knew nothing about them.

Some of the classifications were revoked after the change of the regime. For example, it became known in 1998 that there is a bunker underground. Now somebody would like to sell this land (2012 square metres) for 125 million HUF (372 thousand EUR) on the most prominent Hungarian real estate website.

The owner says that it is

ideal for growing mushrooms or for creating a logistics centre.

Under the ground, there is a network of tunnels protected by thick concrete and dolomite. Its area is 1,400 square metres, and there are three huge halls inside with toilets and bathrooms. Moreover, there is electricity, running water and phone connection inside the facility.

The bunker was part of a tropospheric news chain operated by the KGB, the Soviet secret service.

Flight from hell: People collapsed on Budapest-Edinburgh flight

ryanair

Chaos ensued on a flight from Budapest to Edinburgh last Friday. Passengers started to collapse presumably due to a lack of oxygen on board. The cabin crew had to pass out oxygen tanks to help the stricken passengers.

Ryanair’s flight took off at 9:50 p.m. on 31 January from Budapest Airport, and it headed to Edinburgh, Scotland. About an hour after take-off, passengers started to faint, and chaos ensued, The Scottish Sun reports. One of the passengers, 27-year-old Shaun Pinkerton, told The Scottish Sun: “I was knocked out and needed an oxygen mask. There was something seriously wrong with that flight.” He recalled the incident as:

“The fire alarm was going off while we were boarding, but the flight took off as planned. We got up in the sky, and about an hour in the first person collapsed. She was only 17 and needed CPR. Then the second person went down, then me, and then a fourth. People were standing in aisles giving CPR, and they had huge oxygen tanks out. I was knocked out and needed an oxygen mask. Then I went into shock and was total shaking.”

Shaun described his experiences as a “flight from hell,” and he also filed an official complaint with Ryanair. Even though he is a frequent flyer, the experience left him terrified of ever flying again:

“I’m a young guy, I fly all the time, and I’m always fine. There was something seriously wrong with that flight; folk were worried there wasn’t enough oxygen. I don’t know why they didn’t divert the plane to land sooner. Everyone was panicking, and we still don’t really know what happened. It makes you not want to fly again … I’m due to go to Poland in three weeks, and Madrid three weeks after that but I don’t want to step foot on a plane ever again. It was like something out of a movie.”

A historical letter emerged from the bottom of a Hungarian wardrobe in the Netherlands

Imre Szabó Nyilatkozat Statement

Deep within this piece of furniture, the new owners have found a document of a man from Kecskemét who had entered the Communist Party despite his own conviction, 24 wrote.

The Dutch page of The Best Social Media – which mainly draw their content from Facebook and Instagram posts – wrote on Thursday that a Dutch couple had bought a cabinet colourfully decorated with Hungarian folk art about 20 years ago, and they recently found a Hungarian letter in a hidden corner of one of the drawers.

The full text of the document reads as follows:

Statement

Below, I declare that, despite my political convictions, I am going to join the Hungarian Communist Party as this is the only way I can provide for myself and my family.

According to the 5,000/1946. M.E. edict, I was placed on List B without bail and I could only get a job if I joined the above-mentioned party.

So, under the influence of compelling circumstances, I am forced to enter.

Kecskemét, September 9, 1946.

Imre Szabó

The couple posted this surprising document signed by four witnesses in a Facebook post. This find is very rare as even in Hungary there are only a few similar documents left.

Similarly, the wardrobe with the Hungarian folk motifs is very rare and venerable itself. This two-door wardrobe that once held clothes was probably considered old even back in 1946, as these pieces of furniture appeared around the 18th century in the homes of the Hungarian peasantry.

If you are interested in other Hungarikums like the folk art on this wardrobe, then you can read this article about Hungarian embroidery. You should not lose heart if you are sweet-toothed, as you can learn more about one of Hungary’s most famous cakes here.

Hungarian Vizsla dog killed by a jackal in Hungary!

Hungarian Vizsla killed

The Hunting Association of Dorozsma held a traditional New Year’s hunting when a jackal attacked and killed one of the hunters’ Hungarian Vizsla. The tragic case was reported on the Facebook site of Nimród Hunter.

The attack happened on Saturday afternoon. Szikra, the short-haired Hungarian Vizsla came out of a ditch, when the jackal jumped out of the five-foot grass and grabbed him by his throat. The dog drowned within a few minutes.

The jackal tried to attack the hunters as well. According to a hunter, the attack happened so close to them that there was no opportunity to shoot the predator; they could not endanger human lives. After the offence, the aggressive jackal immediately disappeared.

Szikra’s owner said that the whole family is mourning as they profoundly loved the 7-year-old dog whose work was irreplaceable. Szikra grew up with his children; he was a beloved member of the family and a good hunting buddy.

The expert also added that – “The case perfectly demonstrates that jackal is a murderous predator. Its strength, courage and aggressiveness are more intensive than we previously thought, as it chose to kill instead of the possibility to escape.”

Australia has been warned to brace for record-breaking heatwave

australia beach

Central Australia has been warned to prepare for potentially record-breaking temperatures.

With much of Australia set to experience sweltering heat in the lead-up to Christmas on December 25, the Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday warned that temperature records could tumble in the nation’s arid center, which is otherwise known as the Outback.

“We could see temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius (C) and possibly a new record in Alice Springs,” senior forecaster Angeline Prasad told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

advent-Budapest-hungary
Read alsoNo white Christmas this year either, temperatures might rise to 18°C in Hungary!

“Alice Springs’s record temperature is currently 45.6C.

“Temperatures in Alice Springs over the next week are forecast for 44C, 44C, 41C, 42C, 43C, 43C and 45C,” she said.

A similar warning has been issued for South Australia where soaring temperatures have increased pressure on the hospital system.

According to research published by Adelaide University on Wednesday, high-intensity heatwaves result in a 15 percent increase in ambulance callouts in the state.

“As silent killers, heatwaves kill more people than any other natural disasters,” lead author Peng Bi told News Corp Australia.

Prasad said that a number of temperature records have already been broken in the

Northern Territory with Darwin having recorded its longest streak of days of 35C or more with 11.

Darwin has also broken its record for the most number of days exceeding 35C in a single year with 35 so far in 2019.

Prasad said that relief from the heat was unlikely before Christmas.

“This Christmas we are looking at a hot Christmas,” she said.

“We are looking at very hot days and the nights will be very warm,” she added.

Deadly prank! Friends duct-taped victim to a chair

crime-police-hungary.

A deadly prank ended the life of 43-year-old Zsolt Göbölös last Friday. Local people can still not fathom what had happened to the most innocent man in the village.

Zsolt fell asleep on a table last Friday night on a pub’s terrace. Three other guests of the pub thought that it would be fun to tie a chair to his back and duct-tape his hands and legs together, reported Blikk.

“The bartender videotaped the whole scene and sent the videos to his friends. Half the village was laughing at poor Zsolt,” a local said. “When a guest told them to let Zsolti go, he said they would untie him. But they forgot about it, and after closing, Zsolt fell to the ground and could not get up. In the morning, the driver of the 4 AM bus went over to him. He called an ambulance and the police, but by that time he had gone so cold they could not save his life.”

According to another article, after falling asleep at around 7 o’clock, Zsolt must have spent about 10 hours out in the cold, until having been found by the bus driver.

Zsolt, a public worker, had not been able to take care of his four children for a while, so their godmother, Ramóna Török, 27, took custody of them. When the children found out about their father’s passing, they could not stop sobbing for hours.

“I hope everyone who pulled such an evil prank on Zsolt will be behind bars for years,” said Ramóna. “They did not even bother to find me or Zsolt’s father to apologise.”

Zsolt’s father, Imre Göbölös, 68, still cannot get the last words of his son out of his head. He never thought his son would never return from grocery shopping.

“The next day, the shopkeeper told me that my son had died on the terrace of the pub, his hands and legs tied together, a chair on his back,” recalled Imre. “I did not believe him, I told him not to joke with this. Then others confirmed the story as well, but I still cannot believe it.”

Zsolt lived together with his father, while his daughter and three sons lived with their godmother. “I do not want to believe that I will never see him again. I am still looking at the door and waiting for him to walk in. No one apologised to me, but really, I do not want his murderers to show their faces to me. I wish them the same thing they did to my son,” the heartbroken father said.

When Blikk went to the pub, the owner was behind the bar, and he did not want to comment on the situation, nor about his colleague making photos and videos instead of helping.

The police charged the three men with careless manslaughter. The mother of one of the accused stated that his son did not even touch Zsolt, only his partner testified that he did. “I recently buried my husband, and now I will die from shame.”

Stranger things in 1989: UFO detected over Hungary?

It was 30 years ago, in 1989, that UFOs caused a sensation and people were speaking everywhere about them.

And this was the first time that the Hungarian public media spoke about the question of UFOs and whether they exist – 24.hu reported.

On November 25, many people living in the Transdanubia region said that they saw unidentified flying objects over many cities and settlements. A woman reported to the local meteorological station that she saw yellow lights of the size of orange after 6 pm. At around 7:30 pm, people reported four different lights over Pápa, one of which was moving on an elliptic course while another one was flying 6 km high. According to the news, the meteorological station of Farkasfa could calculate

the speed of the flying objects but the result was shocking: 4.200 km/h

which is almost four times the speed of sound.

I would like to hear more about these phenomenons because I am very interested in them. Together with my classmates, I am waiting for the continuation” – wrote Zoltán H., a 23-year-old university engineer student for M2 (Channel 2 of the Hungarian State Television). His request was heard, and on November 28, the news reported about the strange phenomenons of which everybody in Hungary was talking about.

Those who were talking about what happened were not dubious people but a colonel of the Hungarian army and a meteorologist. The flight director of the Budaörs airport, Éva Tóth, added that the moment she warns pilots about the flying objects they disappear as if they understood what she said.

Reports about UFO detections came every day from people. Some were curious why the leading meteorologist of those days, Szilárd Aigner, does not say anything about the phenomenon while others did not understand why the Hungarian media remains silent about the UFOs that have been seen over Pápa before. Others talked about small red points flying from Ózd to Budapest.

Hungarians remained very much interested in the topic even in 1990, so the Hungarian State Television started a show titled Nulladik típusú találkozások (in English it can be translated as Close Encounters of the Zero Kind) with János Déri.

Paramedic helps Hungarian woman give birth in a public park

child-baby

A woman gave birth in a public park in Sátoraljaújhely. She was extremely lucky, as a paramedic was on his way to work when he heard their desperate screams for help. Talking about being in the right place at the right time.

The Hungarian National Ambulance Services shared a unique case on its Facebook page on Monday.

A paramedic was on his way to work when he noticed a couple in despair in the nearby park. The desperate couple was shouting for help because the woman started going into labour.

Everything happened so fast that there was no chance for them to get to the nearest hospital in time. She was in labour on a park bench when the paramedic arrived.

Luckily, the experienced paramedic immediately knew what to do. He called an ambulance, then started to help the childbirth.

Everything went by the textbook when suddenly there was a complication. One of the newborn’s arms got stuck in the birth canal. Luckily, the paramedic remained calm and used a special manoeuvre to release the baby’s arm.

The birth continued smoothly afterwards, and the baby was born. The ambulance arrived, and mother and baby were transferred to the hospital in stable condition.

You only take your sheep to McDonald’s in Hungary – VIDEO

A video was also made of the strange scene with the sheep – the “pet” was not really disturbed as it seems, and it just kept sniffing around in peace at the McDonald’s of Eger.

According to 24.hu “Bori” the sheep has grown on her owner in such a way that she is kept as a pet besides the dogs and cats of the household. The leashed sheep was waiting patiently while her owner was eating. The special scene was uploaded by Natália Bocsi to her Instagram page.

It has been revealed that this was not the only case when Bori made an appearance in Eger because she regularly appears in different parts of the city at her owner’s side and makes locals smile around her.

“I have brought her downtown to make children happy. I think I managed to do so because many of them have taken photos with my little Bori,”

said Imre Seres, the owner of Bori in December 2016, reports egerhirek.hu.

EIGHT shocking Hungarian mysteries!

road fog mist

Here are eight true stories of unsolved mysteries from Hungary.

Do you like mystery novels and shocking stories? Paul Street on YouTube has collected eight unsolved or shocking cases from Hungarian history just for you.

1 Attila Moczó

November 7, 1997, was a tragic day for the people of Jászberény. Attila Moczó was shot dead on this day, only to be discovered hours later, but by that time, it was way too late to do anything to help.

Attila’s father had reported his son missing a day prior to his body being found by the border. The police told him that if he was missing the following day, they would start a search.

Attila left on his regular trip to his shop in Budapest, where new supplies had arrived. His body was found by his car, on which police found prints of a known car thief from around the shop.

According to the car thief, he leaned on the car to talk to Attila, but after realising he was not going to be able to steal his vehicle, he left. The first time he recreated the encounter for the police, he did not lean on the car, but he had to redo it as the police’s camera had not recorded it the first time. The second time, he did lean on the vehicle, explaining the print. The police decided he was not their man and let him go, but whenever they tried to investigate a new lead, it led to nowhere.

The mystery has never been solved, and the brutality of Attila’s wounds indicate that the murder happened out of rage against the victim. This complicates the case because Attila led a simple and unproblematic life, with no known enemies or conflicts.

Could he have led a double life and perfectly hid his dark side? We will never know…

2 The interruption of the Duck Tales

On December 12, 1993, many, many children were watching the Duck Tales on TV in Hungary, when an unusual interruption occurred.

Every child who watched the show that night later developed a flash memory, which means they have a bizarre memory from childhood which they had not known how to react to at the time, but it is stored in their subconscious forever.

That night, the episode suddenly stopped after Uncle Scrooge complained about a sea monster eating his ice cream. After that, sad piano music started and played for several minutes, before Péter Boros appeared on screen to announce that Prime Minister József Antal had died.

Children did not understand what was happening at the time; all they knew was that everyone seemed to be sad and that there was a man on television instead of their beloved cartoon.

Some people who were watching the cartoon as a child at the time now, as adults, feel like crying whenever they hear the piano music that was playing during the announcement.

3 Brigitta Árvai

One of the biggest mysteries in Hungary to this day is surrounding Brigitta’s death. It all started on October 27, 1995, when she was last seen by her sister.

Brigitta told her sister she would go home to rest because she was tired, but they found her burnt body on the side of a highway three days later.

The investigation revealed that the woman was hit by a car, dragged to the side of the road, and burnt. It is unknown whether it was an accident or the perpetrators intentionally hit her. But who would burn the body if they accidentally hit someone instead of calling an ambulance?

Police even identified the type of car that had hit her based on her injuries, but they never found the one.

Police found a diary that Brigitta had kept, in which she writes about a man named István, with whom she was in love, and she might have been pregnant. Police started looking for men named István in her life. Her boss was one, but he was a married man. However, on the day she was last seen, her boss drove her to her sister’s house. But police found nothing on her boss’s Volkswagen. He refused to participate in questioning with a lie detector.

4 Sándor Petőfi

One of Hungary’s biggest and most well-known historical figures, Sándor Petőfi, was reportedly last seen on July 31, 1849, in the Battle of Segesvár.

The case of his death – or disappearance? – is not the only interesting thing about him, though. He had one of the most iconic artist friendships with János Arany in Hungarian history, as they were both key figures both in literature and the revolution in their time. He also influenced eastern culture so much that there are statues of him in Peking and Shanghai. He also had a son, named Zoltán, who was born not long before his father died, and who died aged 22 because of his wild lifestyle.

Petőfi was fighting in the Battle of Segesvár, where 200 Hungarian soldiers fought 800 Russians. After surrendering, Hungarians ran for their lives, including Petőfi. He was last seen by a soldier named József Lengyel, who yelled to Petőfi to run in the direction of Fehéregyháza. We know nothing of Petőfi’s fate after that, but many theories surfaced.

One of them is that he died as a prisoner in Siberia on May 15, 1857, under the name Alexander Steponovich Petrovich, which sounds like the Slavic version of Petőfi’s name.

Check out our in-depth article about Petőfi’s mysterious death HERE.

5 Eszter Tompa

Eszter was only 22 years old when her body was discovered in 2003 by a woman walking her dog.

Her injuries were severe and brutal; she was probably strangled with some sort of string.

The day before, two little girls ran into Eszter and they greeted each other. Eszter kept on biking in the other direction, and the little girls were watching her when a red car stopped next to Eszter – who kept biking – and the man got out to watch Eszter, then got back in the car and drove in the same direction as her. The little girls got worried and ran after Eszter, but she was too far gone. An older man tried to help them by calling out Eszter’s name.

Later, the two girls saw the car and the man again. The man pulled up to them, rolled down his window, smiled, and drove away. They never saw him again.

Police put out a prize for the one who would help them discover the killer, but his identity remains unknown, and he was never caught.

6 Miklós Fehér

Miklós was a soccer player. He was playing on January 25, 2004, where he got a yellow card, and a few minutes afterwards, he started feeling really unwell. Within 10 seconds, he was lying on the floor. He had a sudden heart attack, which would have been nearly impossible to help, so by the time paramedics arrived to the field, he was gone.

But the strangest thing is that cameras recorded everything, and people watched on their televisions as Miklós died right as it was happening live.

7 The bombing of Kassa

Most of the questions about the case are still unanswered. It all occurred on June 26, 1941, when at 1 PM Hungarian air monitoring services detected three bombing planes, but they had no time to report to the headquarters, and they could not make out the models of the aircraft even with their binoculars.

At 1:08 PM, the planes dropped 29 bombs on the town and flew to the left. 32 people died in the attack and over 300 were injured. All of the bombs were Soviet-made, and two Hungarian planes tried to catch the aircraft, but they had sped up by that time, and they were impossible to follow.

There are many theories of who might have bombed the town, including Romania, Yugoslavia, Germany, Hungary, or the Soviet Union.

The German theory is that they bombed Hungary to make Hungarians suspicious of the Soviets and make them join the eastern campaign.

One of the strangest theories is Hungary bombing itself. People theorise that they did it to include themselves in the war; however, the planes were nothing that Hungary could have possibly gotten its hands on.

The Soviet theory is not the strongest either, because, at the time, Soviets wanted to please Hungary so that they would not be too attached to Germany.

8 Bus crash in Verona

The tragic accident took place on January 20, 2017, when students of a Hungarian high school were on their way to the annual ski trip to France. There were a total of 54 people on the bus, including the driver, the students, some parents, and the teachers.

The bus service said the vehicle was 100% safe and the drivers were experienced.

Everything was all and well until the last day of the trip when they were already on their way home. For some unknown reason, the bus got off the road, went into the railing, then crashed into a pillar and caught fire.

People sitting on the right were stuck to the pillar and had no way of getting out, so they burnt alive in the vehicle.

17 people lost their lives, and 24 were severely injured.

One of the teachers saved many children by helping them out of the bus, but could not save his own children.

The cause of the accident is still a mystery. There are rumours that the driver had difficulty with sleeping, or that they built in a larger fuel tank into the vehicle without a permit, but these are just guesses.

Mysterious box left in front of the Tropicarium with a living caiman inside

caiman hungary

Workers of the Tropicarium stumbled upon an unusual surprise in Budapest Sunday morning. Someone left a living 130-cm-caiman for them in a box, asking the establishment to take the poor orphan in.

RTL Klub reports that a mysterious wooden box was found in front of the Tropicarium in Budapest Sunday morning. There was a hand-written note on top of the box which said:

“Tropicarium, please take me in. 130 cm caiman. Be careful, it bites!”

At first, the workers at Tropicarium thought that it was a joke, and they expected to find a stuffed caiman inside or something like that. Much to their surprise, there was a live 130-cm-caiman inside the box. The animal seemed healthy and in good shape. It was carefully transferred from the box into a humidified room.

Six reasons to visit Tropicarium

The Tropicarium already has a caiman named Kálmán. Unfortunately, they cannot put the newcomer together with Kálmán, so they need to transfer it to another zoo where it can be taken care of.

Caimans are relatively small-sized crocodilians that are found mostly in Mexico, Central and Northern South America. They live in marshes, swamps, or mangrove rivers and lakes. They are characterised by scaly skin and an average maximum weight of 6 to 40 kg. They are nocturnal predators. Similarly to alligators and crocodiles, their diet consists of a great deal of fish.

Blacked out passenger dragged across the metro like a sack of potato in Budapest – VIDEO

m3 unconscious man metro budapest

Two security guards were seen dragging an unconscious man on the floor out of the metro at Deák Ferenc Square metro station.

444 reports that according to one of their readers, an unconscious man was dragged out of the metro unit by security guards like he was a sack of potato.

The unidentified reader was commuting on metro M3 on Tuesday afternoon when another passenger has passed out. The reader did not know the reasons why the man lost consciousness, though he thought that it was on account of the hot temperatures on the metro, or the man was simply too drunk.

However, the story gets interesting and shocking once two security guards show up: the guards dragged out the unconscious man on the unit floor.

The reader, as 444 accounts, caught a glimpse of the man eventually sitting up, as the metro continued its journey to Nagyvárad Square.

Someone filmed the incident and uploaded it to YouTube.

444 has contacted BKV (the Budapest Transit Company), who seemingly concluded upon watching the video that nothing out of the ordinary has happened:

‘Today afternoon, at 14:55, security guards have removed an unconscious man from the 6046 wagon of the E5 metro serving the M3 line at Deák square. Later the man was seen by the personnel on call, and then an ambulance transported him to the nearest hospital’ – reads the reply.

As it later turned out, the man was drunk.

The story of the Hungarian countess who became a man

vay-sarolta

The Hungarian writer Sándor Vay was actually born as a woman, Sarolta Vay, but the young countess crossdressed from an early age. Even in her attitude and hobbies, she was a man: she travelled, took part in duels and had female lovers.

Magyarország Kúl tells the story of Sándor Vay, the dutchess who became a man and a writer. He was not only an excellent writer but a strong personality who was exceptionally brave in his time.

Sándor was said to sport a male haircut, smoke thick cigars and use a walking cane. His mannerisms were so manly that people rarely saw through him. One of the greatest Hungarian prose writers of the 20th century, Gyula Krúdy, wrote that Vay could have fooled even the madam from the Mark Twain novels. Krúdy was taken with him and gave detailed, passionate accounts of Vay’s appearance and adventures.

Sarolta Vay was born in 1859 in Dabas to a respected aristocratic family. Her father was in the personal employment of Archduke Joseph of Austria. As a child, Sarolta became skilled in fencing and riding, later studying at famous universities abroad. However, the count’s family became bankrupt, so, Sarolta had to work for her money.

Sarolta began writing and published her short stories and poems under her own name, but when she turned to journalism,

she started using the pseudonym Sándor Vay, among others, like D’Artagnan, Vayk, Floridor and Celestin.

Vay was a columnist, who wrote mostly about noble families in Pest from the 18th-19th centuries and about noble country houses with a male, nostalgic tone.

Vay’s father played a significant role in the child’s transition: he raised Sarolta as a boy on purpose, while her smaller brother, Péter, had to wear skirts. Sarolta’s first romantic encounter with a girl took place in Dresden, at an all-girls seminary when she was 13, having posed as a boy. From this point on, everyone in the family knew about Sándor’s affairs with women.

Sándor’s relationships were adventurous: he took part in a duel for the honour of Mari Hegyesi, an actress from Eger, although the actress did not return Sándor’s feelings. He then eloped with Emma Eszéki, the daughter of a judge from Nyíregyháza, and moved with her to Pest. Later, Sándor fell in love with a governess, Mária Engelhardt, but their relationship was forbidden by the governess’s family.

However, from the letters they have exchanged, it is known that Mária was unaware that Sándor was a woman, as the former wished to have his children.

Vay was thriving as a man: he often got drunk, liked male sports and was widely known for his fencing skills. His appearance and mannerisms reminded one of a refined gentleman, as he respected the traditions regarding clothing. He used socks to make up for the loss of his ‘manhood’.

Vay was enchanted by women. He regarded them with the utmost respect in his writings. In his view, women inspire and aid men: women are the Alpha and the Omega, and the eternal woman can be found everywhere ranging from social life all the way to literature. Sándor writes that women are the incentive to everything a man does; failure and success are in their hands.

For Sándor, a witty mind was much more important than beauty, and he disliked women who boasted of their beauty.

Vay’s gender identity and sexual orientation were regarded as a perversion in the 19th century. In that era, a woman who was attracted to her own gender had no choice but to dress and live as a heterosexual man if she wished not to suppress her feelings. Both Sándor Vay and the English Anne Lister chose this path. Although this was a challenge, living as a woman and loving a woman was unimaginable back then.
