Amazing! Six Hungarian universities among the best higher education institutions in the world

Amazing! Six Hungarian universities among the best higher education institutions in the world

university, QS ranking, szeged

The 2020 world university ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has just been revealed. Amazingly, altogether six Hungarian universities made it to the list, with the University of Szeged performing the best (501-510th place).

According to Eduline, there was little change at the top of the list compared to the previous years. For instance, QS once again chose the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as the best university in the world.

The latest ranking by QS was published Tuesday evening. When it comes to Hungarian universities, six of them made the list.

The University of Szeged ranked the best, in 501-510th place. The University of Debrecen comes next, in 601-650th place. Both Eötvös Loránd University and the University of Pécs ranked in 651-700th place. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as well as the Corvinus University of Budapest, secured their position in 801-1000th place.

The Quacquarelli Symonds ranking considers several aspects when compiling the list, such as the proportion of students and faculty members who are international, the reputation of the institution or the citations per faculty.

From neighbouring countries, Austrian universities performed the best.

A total of five Austrian institutions made it to the top 500 universities, with the University of Vienna securing the 154th place.

From Slovakia, three universities were featured while from Romania, two universities made the list. From Ukraine, six institutions were listed, with the best result achieved by the National University of Kharkiv in 491st place. Slovenia had two universities on the list while both Croatia and Serbia had one university each featured.

The top ten places went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), ETH Zurich, UCL, Imperial College London and the University of Chicago, too. This means that no new university made it to the top 10 compared to last year; there have only been slight changes. In 11th place, two Singapore universities are featured, while a Chinese university is also in the top 20.

Hungary – among the TOP 20 family-friendly countries

family

According to the analysis released by UNICEF this Thursday, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Portugal are the most family-friendly countries. The international organisation listed the most developed countries on the basis of four indicators where Hungary was ranked in 16th place, leaving all the other regional countries behind.

Within the framework of the analysis, 31 rich countries were reviewed by UNICEF considering four indicators length of paid maternity leave; length of paid paternity leave; the proportion of organised supervision of children under 3 years; the proportion of organised supervision in the case of children between three years and pre-school age – in order to assess how family-friendly the country is.

Hungary finished in the middle of the list, sharing the 16th place with Lithuania. Among the region’s countries, only Slovenia managed to precede our country, while the rest of Central and Eastern European countries were ranked in the last third of the list.

Out of the four indicators, Hungary performs the best in the case of paid maternity leave, as the projected total salary of absence comes out to a period of 72 weeks, which is the second highest after Estonia. (In the first two years of maternity leave, mothers receive ‘GYED’ support which is 70% of the salary being maximised; followed by HUF 28,500 financial support which is provided up to the child’s third birthday.)

As the Hungarian news portal Portfolio describes, it is important to mention that these figures were examined in 2016; so, changes might have occurred since then in the ratio of children’s participation in nurseries and kindergartens; and it is also worth noting that the highlighted four indicators do not cover all the elements of family policies.

The top three best restaurants in every Hungarian county – Photos

goulash, food, Hungary

Many Hungarian residents enjoy trying and eating different kind of gastronomical delicacies from each part of the country. Not only Hungarian people but many tourists are keen on getting to know the cultural and traditional features of another country’s gastronomy; many of them visit Hungary for only its dining habits. Although the capital is still the first in the category of best restaurants, there are fifty-four other honourable mentions outside Budapest.

The main target for gastro-lovers to try out special traditional Hungarian food is still Budapest but at the same time, almost every restaurant on the countryside develops rapidly every day; slowly reaching the level of the restaurants in the Hungarian capital – reports Hello Vidék. There are several places outside the capital with an extraordinary menu which consists of many traditional meals and special ones as well.

Besides the general traditional Hungarian meals, it is important for every county to emphasise their own gastronomy and to include regional meals on their menus – making them even more spectacular among others.

Taking this point into consideration, it is recommended to try out every county’s speciality, for example, the fish soup in Baja or the meat-pancakes in Hortobágy. According to many experts, the gastro-revolution in Hungary takes place in its counties as the market of the trademarked products in each country are more popular day by day. These products wear trademarks because they are specialised in the counties’ culture and traditions.

These products only contain natural ingredients from the manufacturer county, emphasise the region’s culture and traditions, provide rare and unique Hungarian cultural features and have the best quality in the county.

Gastronomy develops rapidly in Hungary but not just in Budapest. Almost everywhere in the country, restaurants with high standards and exceptional features can be found, and that is why it is highly recommended to conquer Hungarian counties and not just the capital if we are looking for something special to eat. Another major advantage for these restaurants is that they only work with Hungarian ingredients – tasty fruits, vegetables and excellent meats.

Vienna is the first, Budapest is the 76th best city to live in

budapest night hotel tourism

This year’s most livable city is Vienna, Austria’s capital (again), turns out from a survey that examined life conditions in all 231 capital cities of the world. Budapest, Hungary’s capital is ranked as 76th on the list.

According to Mercer consulting firm’s analyses, Vienna won the title of the world’s best quality of living among all 231 capital cities. Mercer is a company with more than 23,000 employees that are based in 44 countries and the firm operates in over 130 countries.

It is the tenth consecutive year that the Austrian capital was named as the city with the best living conditions. There was no change in the top 3 cities either:

Vienna is the 1st, Zurich is the second and three cities tied at the third place, they are Munich, Auckland and Vancouver.

Mercer studied the living conditions of each city not on locals’ perspective, but the aspect of the incoming foreigners of the city. They compare 39 factors in 10 categories.

Although Budapest is considered as the best destination for tourist, it is not the very best for foreigners to regularly live there, turns out in the survey.

The surrounding capitals of Prague (69th) and Ljubljana (74th) are ahead of Budapest, but Bratislava (80th) is just shortly after Hungarian capital city.

Forbes: The five best and most valuable Hungarian athletes in 2019

Katinka Hosszú, sportswoman, Hungary, Forbes, best

It is the fifth time that Forbes Hungary revealed its list of the most prominent and valuable Hungarian sportswomen and sportsmen in 2019 and the fifth time that Katinka Hosszú took the list’s first place.

Forbes reported that although Katinka Hosszú has gone through many changes in her life in the past months her first place cannot be taken from her and her problems and struggles in her private life have not affected her reputation and achievements.

Since 2015, Hosszú has been the first on the list, but there have been many changes on the second and third place as well.

While four years ago Hungarian swimmer Dániel Gyurta followed Hosszú, now the second place is Márton Fucsovics’s (tennis player). Although he got the prominent second place, he failed in getting closer to Hosszú’s first place, like Norbert Michelisz (racing driver) last year or Áron Szilágyi (fencer) two years ago.

Is Hungary one of the unhealthiest countries in Europe?

emotions smile face happy

A recent study revealed the health state of the countries in the world. Unfortunately, Central Europe did not do particularly well, and Hungary ended up among the unhealthiest countries.

A number of different factors contribute to the worrying result, including the declining state of the environment, limited access to health services and increasingly unhealthy diets in the modern world – reports Kafkadesk.

The recent data is based on the Bloomberg Healthiest Countries Index which compares the health state of 169 countries based on a variety of different factors. These factors include life expectancy as well as environmental variables such as access to clean water or the degree of sanitation in a country. Negative factors like tobacco use and obesity are also taken into account, and countries receive penalties for these.

The healthiest countries on the list

This year, Spain secured the first place, surpassing the last edition’s winner, Italy. According to the survey,

“Spain has the highest life expectancy at birth among European Union nations, and trails only Japan and Switzerland globally.”

Moreover, experts say that the country is going to have the highest life expectancy by 2040, with about 86 years.

Another explanation for the leading position of Southern European countries is the famous Mediterranean diet, often supplemented by nuts and extra-virgin oil.

health, list

Thirteen European countries, like Norway, Sweden, Italy, Iceland or Switzerland, ended up in a respectable position on the list and are among the top 20. Two other countries in the lead come from Oceania, three from Asia, one from the Middle East and one from North-America.

The unhealthiest countries on the list

Unfortunately, countries in Central Europe did not do particularly well on this list. The Czech Republic is in the best position at an overall 29th place, improving slightly compared to the previous study. However, their spot is still not ideal as they are only 22nd when it comes to the ranking on the continent.

[button link=”#https://dailynewshungary.com/as-it-turns-out-hungary-is-the-4th-most-obese-country-in-the-world/” type=”big” newwindow=”yes”] Hungary as the 4th most obese country in the world![/button]

Neighbouring countries are worse off, with Poland ending up in 40th position, which is actually a worse result than in the previous ranking, while Slovakia improved a bit but is still far behind in 45th position.

Hungary is actually in the worst place when compared to other Visegrád Group countries.

Although being in 48th place might seem good enough when we consider that the country came in 52nd on the previous list, but as such, Hungary is still one of the unhealthiest countries in the EU.

Hungary got 69.75 points on the health score, but 5.32 points had to be deducted as penalties.

The other countries occupying positions at the bottom of the list are mostly Sub-Saharan countries, while Yemen, Afghanistan and Haiti also have ways to go in terms of health state.

Hungarian Franz Liszt Academy among the best 100 institutions in the world

Franz Liszt Academy, Hungary, Budapest, music, best

The British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) recently shared their ranking regarding the best universities of arts, and the Hungarian Franz Liszt Academy is the third institution in Central Europe which got featured on the list.

[button link=”https://dailynewshungary.com/hungarian-universities-among-the-best-in-the-world-ceu-ranks-the-41st-here-is-the-list/” type=”big” newwindow=”yes”] Hungarian universities among the best in the world[/button]

Szeretlek Magyarország reported that QS usually makes categories between the 51st and 100th best institutions, and in one of the categories, they chose the Hungarian institution as one of the best ones. The other two institutions are the Estonian Academy of Music and Arts and the Bolsoj Ballett Institution.

Experts ranking the universities for QS’s list take five criteria into consideration.

The first is the reputation of the university. To measure this data, experts asked approximately 80 thousand local experts’ opinion. This criterium takes 40% out of the other five.

According to the statistical measurements, the Hungarian academy’s reputation stands out not just in Hungary but all across the world because many of the academy’s professors take part in international conferences.

The second criterium is the scientific research the universities conduct each year. Experts examined nearly 13 million researches’ 66 million references.

Franz Liszt Academy, music, Hungary, musicians
Photo: www.facebook.com/zeneakademia.hu

The third one is the number of students and professors. The Franz Liszt Academy got a great score in this criterium because one professor can teach and practice with more than one student in a semester.

The fourth one is the number of students with a degree who got a job in the field of music, and the opinion the employers have of them. The academy’s graduate students are welcome all over the world.

Many of them play at the biggest concerts in the world, for example in Vienna.

The fifth criterium examined the number of foreign professors and students. 20% of the Hungarian academy’s students come from foreign countries.

Only Semmelweis University has a higher percentage.

As CEU press release said, “CEU’s global reputation for excellence is once again confirmed by our performance in the QS rankings,” said CEU President and Rector Michael Ignatieff.

CEU tops all other universities in Hungary in these seven subject fields – topuniversities.com

“As a postgraduate university community, we are committed to sustaining the rigor of our research and the strength of our teaching.” Looking at broad subject areas, in Arts and Humanities CEU’s academic reputation rose nearly 6%, to 78.2. In the Social Sciences, the increase was 4.8%, to 71.7.

DECISION HAS BEEN MADE: CEU TO LAUNCH ALL US-ACCREDITED DEGREE PROGRAMS IN VIENNA IN 2019

Semmelweis University

Semmelweis ranked 151-200. Semmelweis University is located in Budapest and is the oldest medical school in the country (established in 1769). The university reached a position of 201-250 in medical education. The Semmelweis University ranked 308th in the field of life sciences and medicine in the broader areas of specialization.

As QS World University Ranking said, the Bachelor’s programmes provide students with general knowledge, skills, abilities, professional competencies, and the professional experience necessary for finding employment. The Master’s programmes and – for those already holding a degree – the postgraduate specialist training programmes allow students to obtain professional specialisation, a deepened knowledge of the field, and a higher level of qualification. Scientific knowledge may be acquired following completion of the Master’s programme within the framework of Ph.D. training. The so-called long-cycle Master’s programmes comprise a unique group, in which the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes are essentially merged together: students enter the programme with their high school leaving certificates and leave with a Master’s degree. Higher-level vocational training also forms part of higher education: credits earned in this form of training can be transferred to a Bachelor’s programme. Completion of a vocational training programme does not result in a higher education degree.

Total Students: 9,643
Academic Faculty Staff: 1,044
International Students: 3,440

The University of Debrecen and University of Szeged

The University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged ranked at 451-500 in the field of life sciences and medicine in the broader areas of specialization.

University of Szeged – Global Ranking: #=470

The University of Szeged offers Bachelor’s programmes at the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Economics & Business Administration, the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Health Sciences and Social Studies. Although students enrolled in the so called undivided (integrated, long, one-tire Master’s) programmes of the Faculty of Dentistry, Medicine or Pharmacy obtain Master’s degree, there is no Bachelor’s degree among the prerequisites.

Szeged is the second hometown of International Students: Public transport, the biggest cycling community in Hungary, swimming pools, baths, theatres and cinemas are here to serve visitors and students while staying in town. Szeged is among the best European University Towns (CondéNast Traveler – 2014) and according to Trivago’s travel site Szeged is the 5th on the list considering the best price-value rates of travel destinations.

ESN Mentors, as member of a non-governmental, volunteer-based student organisation in Europe, are volunteers who help foreign students settling down in Szeged. In cooperation with the University, they help newly arrived students starting their student and social life at SZTE and Szeged. Here are the 20 most vegan countries in Europe – Check out the list here!

market

Unlike many other trendy diets and food trends, veganism is not a fad – it is here to stay. The popularity of veganism has shot through the roof over the past few years, so much so that the plant-based lifestyle is now considered to have gone mainstream.

Chef’s Pencil has analyzed the rise of veganism world-wide through the lens of Google Trends, a reliable big data provider. Google Trends lets you analyze the popularity of various search categories around the world such as veganism, which comprises vegan-related searches made in any language (e.g. “veganism”, “vegan restaurants”, “vegane rezepte”, “vegan essen”).

While some of these searches are made out of curiosity, a high volume of vegan-related searches, such as vegan recipes or vegan restaurants near me, show a clear adoption or intent to adopt a vegan lifestyle.

Google Trends data confirms that veganism is growing fast. 2018 was a record year for veganism searches, up 11% on 2017, and 35% on 2016.

Google allocates an interest score to each location, showing the level of interest in the topic at that location. For example, if Sweden holds an 84 score for veganism and Germany holds a 60 score, it means that a higher percentage of people in Sweden have made vegan-related searches compared to Germany.

We’re going to take a look at the most popular places for veganism in Europe in 2018, and surprisingly the top ten is dominated by countries in the North.

Please see below the countries that ranked in the top 20:

1. United Kingdom (Score 100)
The United Kingdom is the proud home of as many as 3.5 million new vegans, according to a survey carried out by comparethemarket.com. The people of the UK have so embraced veganism that UK cities dominate the European top 10, with six cities taking the prime spots. The media has played a big role in spreading the popularity of veganism among Brits, and the Veganuary campaign, which invited people to try out the vegan lifestyle for the first month of this year, had a huge impact.

2. Sweden (Score 84)
Sweden is one of the leading countries in vegan popularity as about 20% of younger Swedes think of themselves as being vegetarian or vegan. A report published by the Nordic Council of Ministers shows an even more promising future for veganism in Sweden as half the population say veganism is something they would like to try out. And just to confirm Sweden’s commitment to all things non-animal, food producers are taking a lead in vegan food innovation.

3. Ireland (Score 62)
‘’The Vegans Have Landed’’ claimed the Irish Times in 2018. Their article showed that more and more people are choosing a plant-based lifestyle, and the major cities are responding with more vegan choices when it comes to food and produce. However, locals believe there is still a long way to go for the country to be considered a world centre for veganism.

Unexpected success! One of Slovakia’s top 10 restaurants is in Hungary

restaurant, gastronomy, food

The Slovakian Trend magazine’s online issue recently collected the top ten restaurants in Slovakia. One fact about these restaurants is truly unexpected and a huge success: one of the restaurants is in the Hungarian town of Encs (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County), and has been chosen as one of Slovakia’s favourite restaurants.

Dining Guide reported that the Slovakian magazine not only recommended this Hungarian restaurant called Anyukám Mondta (meaning ‘My Mother Said It’) but also became one of Slovakia’s best restaurants. The Slovakian journalist who made this list did not rank the restaurants by other guests’ opinions and reviews but visited every one of them, including the Hungarian one. The journalist was so fascinated by the Hungarian restaurant that it immediately became a part of the list.

Let us clear it up a bit. Encs is a Hungarian town located 20 km from the Slovakian border and 45 km from Kosice (Kassa).

How does Kosice come into the picture? Some people who live in Slovakia’s largest city are keen on fine restaurants and gastronomy, and often say to other people:

“Kosice’s favourite restaurant is Anyukám Mondta.”

Anyukám Mondta has been Encs’s and its region’s best restaurant for years and has an excellent reputation. The Dudás brothers – owners of the restaurant – reported that it is not just a huge success and achievement but also a friendly gesture from Slovakia.

The most delicious Hungarian cakes in the world – Photos

cake, Esterhazy, delicious

Christmas is not only the season of celebrating and gifting but cooking and baking, as well. This is the feast when Hungarian residents spend a lot of money to buy food and ingredients, for baking different kinds of Christmas cakes and cookies. The beijgli, the Hungarian snow crescents, the spice-cake, and the gingerbread are the essential delicacies of Christmas, but there are also many others that are worth a try.

CNN’s journalist and gastronomy expert Jen Rose Smith collected the best fifty cakes in Europe, featuring three traditional Hungarian ones.

Let’s have a look at these delicious Hungarian cakes!

Esterházy cake

This delicious and traditional Hungarian cake got its name after Count Esterházy. Its melting texture and sweet taste always ensured the popularity of this somewhat old-fashioned cake in Budapest, but this dessert can be found in Vienna and Sarajevo too. This creamy cake can be found in every confectionery in Hungary. Although it is famous in Hungary and we consider it as a Hungarikum, it was actually first made in Austria.

Hungarian snow crescents

This is indeed a traditional and unique Hungarian dessert which can be served with different kinds of jam to make it more tasty and unique. Snow crescents can also be filled with peach, plum, nuts and poppy. After it is ready, there is only one thing to do: to serve it with white sugar, which makes it even more festive.

Rigó Jancsi cake

This is the third featured Hungarian cake on the list. Its creamy and soft texture with a rich taste makes this cake attractive for everyone. This Hungarian cake got its name after a love story. The cake is usually filled with peach jam and chocolate mousse. Click here for the recipe.

And there are still so many others to be found in the capital. For example, the chocolate chip cookies, doughnuts and old-time favourite brownie from the United States, which can be found in almost every Hungarian confectionery. Not to mention the delicious chocolate mousse from France, the German black forest cake, the fruity Apfelstrudel from Austria, and the Turkish baklava.

The most famous one on this list is probably the Italian Gelato. This sweet innovation is better than the usual ice-cream, and is made with many different tastes. The famous Austrian linzer torte – which is a favourite type of cake in Hungary – is also featured in the list, as well as the French lemon cake.

Besides popular desserts, there are a lot less known cakes as well. These peculiar but tasty cakes are for example:

  • Kashata (East-Africa)
  • Knafeh (Levant)
  • Kulfi (India)
  • Mandazi (South Sudan)
  • Polvorónes (Latin America)
  • Sticky rice with mango (Thailand)

The best Hungarian universities to look out for in 2019

graduates

The business journal Heti Világgazdaság lists at the end of each year the best Hungarian universities for the coming year. This year, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), the University of Szeged and the University of Debrecen are among the top, as Eduline reports. ELTE also excels when it comes to a detailed list containing the faculties.

According to Eduline, the Eötvös Loránd University has proved to be the best Hungarian university once again, also being the best from the point of view of professor excellence. The second best in this aspect is the University of Szeged and the third is the University of Debrecen. Budapest University of Technology and Economics and Semmelweis University came fourth.

Rank Institution Professor excellence (rank) Student excellence (rank)
1. Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) 1. 2.
2. University of Szeged (SZTE) 2. 5.
3. University of Debrecen (DE) 4. 5.
4. Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) 10. 3.
4. Semmelweis University (SE) 9. 4.
6. Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE) 6. 8.
6. University of Pécs (PTE) 4. 10.
8. Pannon University (PE) 2. 16.
9. Corvinus University of Budapest (BCE) 18. 1.
9. National University of Public Service (NKE) 14. 5.

In the overall ranking, the sixth place is divided between two institutions as well: between the Pázmány Péter Catholic University and the University of Pécs.

Even though the Corvinus University of Budapest ranked quite low in professor excellence, they are first when it comes to student excellence.

Similarly, the National University of Public Service ranked 14th in professor excellence, but their students ranked 5th.

The list is broken down into a further division, ranking the faculties. On this list, the Faculty of Humanities of ELTE is first, followed by another ELTE faculty, the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The third place is occupied by the General Medicine faculty of Semmelweis University.

Several factors are given attention during the compilation of this ranking, such as the applicants who had these particular universities as their first choice, the average admission score, the number of accepted students who have a language certificate, the number of students participating in study competitions, the number and rate of professors with an academic degree, the number of students per each professor with an academic degree and the rate of professors holding an MTA (Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, Hungarian Academy of sciences) title.
