The best St. Martin’s Day dishes in Budapest
“Whoever does not eat goose on St. Martin’s Day shall starve for the whole year” — or at least that is what a saying in Hungary claims. The restaurants of Budapest serve specialties made of goose for a whole month, so people cannot say that they do not have the opportunity to avoid a year of hunger. Funzine collected five places where the best goose dishes are made.
Costes Downtown
Costes Downtown — that earned a Michelin star and Tiago Sabarigo is working there as a chef — is one of Budapest’s most elegant restaurants. It prepares for St. Martin’s day with special goose dishes and new wines. This restaurant awaits gourmet guests with goose nuggets between 6 and 12 November, while they serve a delicious goose dish on Saturday and Sunday. The ground floor of Prestige Hotel Budapest offers artistically served dishes, spectacular open kitchen and unique taste combinations.
Remiz
St. Martin’s Day is important not only for folklore tradition but also for cuisine. Remiz — that is situated in a calm green area — prepares special menus between 8 and 17 November. This restaurant offers both classical and modern dishes for those interested in gastronomy. Goose dish with its liver, potato crust, onion and sodden cabbage; toast from homemade bread with goose liver and truffle cream; “Royal Tokaji” goose liver dish with a glass of Royal Cuvée. This is just a fragment of Remiz’s St. Martin’s Day menu.
Magyar Ízek Magyar Háza
Magyar Ízek Magyar Háza can be found on Váci Street, which is the number one shopping area of Budapest.
The restaurant prepares a special goose dish for two for this occasion, containing mostly traditional Hungarian courses.
The seasonal offer includes candied goose legs, smoked goose breast, goose breast with rose wine or liver pate served in funnel cake with walnuts. But side dishes are also from a large variety: you can order your dishes with bulgur risotto, potato steak with caramel and pumpkins, or red cabbage with quince.
7th St. Martin’s Day Wine Festival at Hotel Gellért
Hotel Gellért hosts its own wine festival the seventh time this year. The seventh occasion evolves around number seven. The hotel becomes the venue of a great goose feast: the halls will be full of delicious snacks and tasty wines served by well-known chefs and winemakers. This all will be accompanied by live music.
St. Martin’s Day New Wine Festival and Goose Feast
The Skanzen in Szentendre hosts its own St. Martin’s Day festival between 11 and 12 November. The crew offers a large variety of programs, new wines and goose specialties for couples, friends and families.
The St. Martin’s Day festival in Szentendre is one of the most popular events in Hungary on this day: it awaits visitors with concerts, dance performances, workshops, markets and wine tastings.
Moreover, Szentendre can be easily accessed from Budapest by either half an hour of driving or railway H5.
St. Martin’s Day Candle-Light Express
MÁV Nostalgia hosts its traditional St. Martin’s Day event this year as well, attracting lovers of old times and gastronomy. Candle-Light Express offers a goose dinner with three courses — with a different option for vegetarians —, new wines and three hours of different programs, accompanied by Gábor Viczián’s piano tunes.
