For most of the people, Budapest is the first thing that comes to their mind when they think about Hungary. This country is beautiful, and it has many other beautiful cities. Now, let us take a look at Sárospatak.

General information

Sárospatak lies in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Northeast Hungary, about 250 kilometres away from Budapest. Even though it is not a county capital (which is Miskolc), it is definitely worth a visit. Sárospatak has only about 12,000 inhabitants but significant history. According to the first records, the city existed already in around 900.

The castle

Sárospatak has a wonderful castle: the Rákóczi Castle. It is the most remarkable building in the city with its beautiful late Renaissance style. Moreover, it is also part of the National Cultural Heritage. The castle was built in the 16th century and stands ever still. It takes part in the Nationa Castle Programme (Nemzeti Kastély- és Várprogram) this is why its renovation is due to 2018.

Furthermore, an interesting fact about this castle is that the Hungarian 500 forint banknote displays its picture on the back and Ferenc Rákóczi’s portray on the front.

The Tarn of the Megyer Mountain

The Tarn of the Megyer Mountain is a wonderful natural beauty no one should miss if they visit the area. The tarn is situated in a long-ago stone-pit surrounded by steep walls of the mountain. Tourists can walk around the little lake and take a tour in the mesmerising area where they can admire the grape plantations as well. Additionally, it is a fantastic program even with smaller children because the distance is not too long or difficult to accomplish.

Tokaj Wine Region

Tokaj-Hegyalja is a historic wine region that well-known due to its one-thousand-years of viticultural and wine traditions. It has not changed for many centuries including its beneficial microclimate, vineyards, cellars, and natural surroundings. Tokaj Wine, Tokaj Aszú, and Tokaj Furmit are popular for those who are fond of wines. The Tokaj Wine Region is a spectacular area everyone should visit. Additionally, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage for over 15 years.
