Snow Hungary

The Hungarian Meteorological Service said that there would be as cold in Hungary in the next few days as never before. Therefore, they expect record-breaking regarding the minimum temperature. Though the weather was spring-like between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, it seems that January will be cold in Hungary. We already experienced that change last week when the temperature fell below -10 Celsius degrees. However, meteorologists say that this week will be much colder.

-20 Celsius degrees to come

According to napi.hu, on Tuesday, the lows were between -5 and -12 °C. However, in regions protected from winds and frost pockets, the temperature could go even below -15 °C.

On Wednesday, meteorologists expect a slightly cloudy sky and a dry, sunny day. In the evening, clouds may appear in the northern and northeastern regions of the country. Snowdrifts should be expected East of the River Tisza (Tiszántúl), and strong winds will rule the day. Winds are to decline by evening. The highs will come between -3 and +3 °C in the daytime. In the Tiszántúl, especially in regions covered by snow, the mercury might go even lower.

Thursday will be sunny. But, in the morning, there will be fog. There will be no precipitation, but there will be strong winds. The minimums will be between -4 and -13 °C.

In the regions covered by snow, there will be much colder: the mercury level might go below -20 Celsius degrees.

The highs will be between +1 and +6 °C, but only between -5 and 0 in the northeastern regions.

The weekend will be warmer

On Friday, the weather will be sunny but foggy. There will be no considerable precipitation, but snowdrifts are expected in most parts of the country. At dawn, the temperature will be between -6 and 0 Celsius degrees. However, as before, in frost pockets, these numbers will be lower. The highs will be between 4 and 10 Celsius degrees, but only -3 and 0 in the regions covered in snow.

Based on idokep.hu,

the weekend will be cloudy without rain or snow.

On Saturday, there will be strong winds, which will disappear by Sunday. The temperature will rise to -2 and +8 Celsius degrees during the weekend. However, daybreak fogs will return.

Interestingly, the lowest temperature measured in Hungary was in 1940 in Miskolctapolca: -35 °C.

Thankfully, we will not have to go without snow this winter. Especially the eastern part of Hungary is affected by the snow.

In some places, the snowfall lasted all day long on Saturday. Thanks to this, many of us were able to take beautiful pictures of the snow-covered scenery.

According to Időkép.hu, the precipitation zone of a shallow cyclone has reached our country from the southeast. It is causing snowfall in the east and southeast.

That is a difference of as much as 25 degrees Celsius.

Snow and –14 °C to come at the weekend!

Snowman-winter-snow

We spent Christmas and celebrated the new year with springlike weather in Hungary. Not surprisingly, temperature records were broken in the last few days. For example, 15.7 °C was measured on Tuesday in Drávaszabolcs, southern Hungary. This is 0.1 °C higher than the daily temperature recorded in Ásotthalom in 1949, OMSZ said. However, it seems that winter will return with minuses. Furthermore, there is a chance that snow will come to most parts of Hungary at the weekend, so you should prepare your sledge, gloves, and happiness.

Minuses to come

According to the weather forecast of index.hu, some places in Hungary can expect 10 centimetres of snow and even minus 14 degrees Celsius. Thursday was windy and cloudy, but clouds disappeared in the afternoon. This trend will continue on Friday as the weather will be sunny, and meteorologists expect no precipitation. However, from early evening, clouds will return and

light snow can be expected near the southern border.

The lowest temperature is expected to be between -10 and -5 degrees Celsius, but it might go below -14 °C in certain places. During the day, the highest temperature will be between -1 and +4 degrees Celsius.

The weekend will be much colder

According to idokep.hu, snow is most likely to fall in the “Viharsarok” area, in Southeastern Hungary. In the northern valleys, the temperature might even go below minus 10 degrees Celsius. This is because a Mediterranean cyclone’s precipitation zone is to reach Hungary from the South during the weekend. Calculations show that it will mainly hit the southeastern parts of the country.

In some places in Békés, Csongrád, and Hajdú-Bihar Counties, the layer of snow may be 10 centimetres thick.

Meanwhile, meteorologists do not expect snowdrifts. The temperature will be between 0 and -1 °C. The Transdanubia region will be warmer, and the temperature will be between +1 and +3 °C.

The precipitation zone will leave the country on Saturday, but snow will return on Sunday to the Transdanubia region. In the southern and southeastern regions covered by snow, the temperature will decrease below minus 10 degrees Celsius by Sunday dawn. Moreover,

people living there should also expect fog.

Here is a video about what to expect during the weekend in certain parts of Hungary. The blue colour represents the territory where snow is to come.

Hungary’s coldest village organises a Cold Festival – Program Guide, VIDEO

cold_festival_in_zabar

During the cold winter months, many people want nothing more than the warmth of home. Still, there is a special Hungarian festival to celebrate winter minuses together. Zabar, also called the Hungarian Siberia, awaits its visitors with a special frost festival this weekend.

At first glance, there is nothing special about the remote, tiny village of Zabar. Still, the small village – located in the north of Nógrád County – holds a special record. It has the coldest average winter temperature in Hungary. Therefore, the tiny village is also known as the Hungarian Siberia. An even more surprising fact is that Zabar organises a special festival every year to celebrate winter minuses.

In 2020, the village hosted its first cold festival to start a tradition, but last year, the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

This year, however, the Zabar Winter Festival will be held for the second time, on 8th January, awaiting its visitors with special, entertaining programmes.

Accordingly, visitors can participate in a cooking competition, mulled wine competition, brandy tasting, skiing, and musical theatre performances. In addition, József Mónus, Hungarian world-champion long-range archer, will light the bonfire of the cold festival with a flaming arrow. As Sokszínű Vidék reports, entry to the winter festival is free of charge.

In the village, temperatures can sometimes drop below zero even in the spring months. As Földjaró reports, last year, -5.9 °C was measured on 28 April 2021. Furthermore, in the winter months, the temperature can drop below -20 °C.

Last year, on 13th February, the temperature dropped to -25.8 °C.

The freezing temperatures are described by a funny proverb in the village. It is said that, in Zabar, it is so cold in the winter that the cat breaks in two when it turns a corner.

2021 among Hungary’s driest and coldest years

dry-weather-dead-tree
Precipitation in Hungary was a little more than 500 mm in 2021, almost 20 percent under the average, making it one of the driest years since data started to be collected in 1901, an annual report by the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) shows.

OMSZ said precipitation in the months of March, June, September and October were around half of the average. Such dry conditions were last seen in Hungary in 2012, it added.

The report also shows that the average temperature was 10.8 degrees Celsius for 2021, not far from the average for 1991-2020, but still marking

the coolest year in a decade.

Temperatures in January and February were over 1 degree higher than the average, but temperatures in April and May were more than 2 degrees under the average, making it the coolest spring since 1987.

Hot spells lasted longer than usual during the summer, but the autumn was cooler than average. Temperatures in December were 1 degree warmer than the average, according to OMSZ.

Fog in Salgótarján

We have just written a snippet about the weather going crazy on New Year’s Eve and breaking century-old records around the country, especially in western Hungary, but it seems that the weather continues to surprise us and the record-breaking continues in 2022 as well.

Időkép, a weather forecasting website wrote that the previous record set in 1921 in Budapest, the Hungarian capital have been already broken before noon on January 1st, 2022.

It is almost as if spring had arrived to Hungary a few months early. Even though Hungary had a mild winter in 2021, and white Christmas only came to a few places, it is still shocking that meteorological stations have recorded over 17 °C on New Year’s Day in the country.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service have posted on their Facebook page that the previous all-time high on January 1st was broken by over 2 °C.

Previously, the all-time high was held by Sopron with 15.3 °C recorded in 1921, while the current highest was recorded in Főnyed with 17.5 °C.

Budapest’s record was also broken. In 1921, they recorded 13 °C on the top of Gellért Hill. Yesterday, the temperature was 14.4 °C at Lágymányos, but Ferihegy (in the area of Budapest Airport) and Újpest was only lagging behind by 0.2 °C.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service also highlighted, that 50 of their weather stations have recorded higher temperatures than a 101 years ago.

Huge storm hit Hungary — PHOTOS

Storm Hungary

A huge storm hit Hungary over the weekend. It caused traffic congestion and several accidents among other disruptions. Disaster management asks the population to pay special attention. Due to the huge wind, people alerted fire fighters numerous times. The festive Christmas trees have also fallen in several rural towns.

Storm across Hungary

People alerted fire fighters at more than a hundred locations on Sunday morning, writes origo.hu. The National Directorate General for Disaster Management writes that in most cases fire fighters were called for torn branches, fallen trees and wires. Most notifications came from Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Fejér, Somogy, Veszprém and Zala counties.

Alarms have been issued in several parts of the country due to snow and stormy wind.

Disaster Management is asking people to pay attention to the forecasts of the Meteorological Service. Before your departure, take a look at the current weather forecast and road conditions. People alerted fire fighters 250 times by Sunday noon. Not only the strong wind, but also rain and snow make things difficult for disaster protection services and fire fighters.

In Hévíz, the storm damaged the roof of a hotel. While in Érd, the roof structure of a church was damaged by the storm. In Kaposvár, firefighters had to repair the roof of a dormitory. The storm did not spare the roads either. It caused serious traffic disruption and several trees have fallen.

Fallen Christmas trees, cancelled programs

The Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture program had to be delayed due to the storm. In addition, several minor programs were cancelled. For example, Veszprém cancelled its annual Old Town Square market.

The Christmas tree fell in many settlements.

In Nyíregyháza, the Christmas tree in Kossuth Square was damaged by the windstorm. The Christmas tree in Kaposvár was downed by the storm on Sunday morning. The square was empty, so fortunately there were no injuries, telex.hu writes. The tree already had a little crash 10 days earlier due to the heavy rainfall. However, the tree trunk broke entirely this time because of the windy weather on Sunday morning. The Christmas tree also fell over in Baja during the night. In Nyíregyháza, the lower branches of the tree are reportedly cut down to be later restored.

According to the report of the Hungarian Meteorological Service, a precipitation zone passed over the country on Friday, which brought the first snow of this winter. The arrival and departure of precipitation zones will characterise the entire weekend.

Coming from the southwest, an extensive precipitation zone passed over the country, bringing rain and snow in the area of Sopron, in the western and northern parts of Transdanubia, in the Bakony, and in some regions of the North Hungarian Mountains, writes Hvg.

The cloud layer passed over Hungary on Friday, but there may be further snowfall on the western border of Hungary on Saturday. Rainfall stopped in the morning in both the southern and western regions, but another precipitation zone arrives in the afternoon, gradually moving to the east in the evening. On the weekend, daytime temperatures will be between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius during the day, but a temperature of minus 2 or 3 degrees may occur in some regions during the night.

In most parts of the country, the snow is only expected to reach a few centimetres, but in the Alpokalja region, in the Kőszeg and Sopron Mountains, it could exceed 10 centimetres,

adds Index. Időkép reported that a 10-centimetre layer of snow was measured at the Kendig peak near Kőszeg on Friday.

The snow also transformed several cities into a winter wonderland, and numerous photos of snow-covered landscapes have appeared on social media sites. Here are some photos of Sopron and the Esterházy Palace in Fertőd:

Where can you breathe the cleanest and the most harmful air in the world? – MAP

Air Quality Around The World

HouseFresh has compiled the data and made an interective map of air quality of the world and all the states of the US. Below, you can find a summary of what they found.

The American Lung Association State of the Air 2021 report found that despite nationwide efforts in controlling air pollution, more than 40% of Americans – over 135 million people – are still living in areas with unhealthy particulate pollution and ozone levels.

In fact, 9 out of 10 urban dwellers are affected by air pollution. And this isn’t just the case in the United States, it’s a worldwide problem. But which cities are the worst, and which are the best for breathing fresh air?

To find out, HouseFresh visualized the latest data on air quality in major cities around the world, revealing the most and least polluted cities in nearly every country, as well as in every US state.

HouseFresh is a team of experts in keeping your house clean and fresh. Whether they are rounding up the best advice for cleaning your kitchen or shortlisting the best air purifiers on the market, HouseFresh’s goal remains the same: making your house a little “fresher” without breaking the bank.

Terrible! Air quality worsens across Hungary

Planet Budapest 2021 Sustainability Expo and Summit to be held from November 30

Methodology:

Researchers at HouseFresh extracted city-level air quality data from the latest 2020 World Air Quality report by IQAir. Data in hand, the team identified the best and worst cities and towns for clean air across nearly 100 countries, as well as across all 50 US states.

Cities and towns were ranked on the average value of PM2.5 concentration in μg/m³ in 2020 and countries without at least five cities were omitted.

The team then plotted the results on an interactive map, plus static world and continent maps.

Key Findings:

  • Bangladesh takes the top spot as the most polluted country, followed by Pakistan, India, and Mongolia.
  • 49 of the 50 most polluted cities worldwide were in Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, and India.
  • Japanese city Obihiro was Asia’s top city for clean air with a PM2.5 of 5.6μg/m3.
  • Judbury (Australia), Kailua Kona (U.S.A.), and Muonio (Finland) were the cities with the cleanest air around the globe.
  • Susanville in wildfire-ravaged California had the dirtiest air in America with a PM2.5 of 26.2μg/m3.

Indian summer to end this week – you won’t like what comes after!

Summer-is-over

Hungary got a taste of winter last week with the first snowfalls in the upper regions of the country. Last weekend, summer returned with 15 Celsius degrees and even higher temperatures in some parts around yesterday noon. For example, in Budapest, the weather was quite warm on Monday.

Indian summer ends

If somebody planned a trip yesterday, they had joyful weather with almost no wind and a lot of sunlight. Like it was summer again. It seems now that this trend will remain until the middle of the week, but after that winter comes back again crueller than last week.

According to borsonline.hu, on Tuesday morning,

we should expect sunny weather.

However, clouds will return in the afternoon, but there will be no rain. Southern winds will get strong in the Western parts of the country. The temperature is expected to reach even 14-19 Celsius degrees.

Is it worth planning a trip for the weekend?

On Wednesday, the temperature will increase even further and reach even 24 °C in some parts of Hungary. The weather will be mostly sunny; rain chances are slight – idokep.hu says.

These are the best things to do in Hungary during the beautiful Autumn weather

On Thursday, a cold front will arrive in Hungary. The wind will pick up, and the temperature is expected to decrease by 10-12 degrees. Still, the heights will be around 18 and 24 Celsius degrees in some parts of the country.

On Friday, the weather will get worse with many freezing showers and strong winds. From Saturday on, there

will be -5, -10 °C

during the nights, and even the heights are to be below 10 Celsius degrees. Rains will come down as snow and ice, so everybody should be careful on the roads.

Thus, we recommend you to take out your coat, scarf and hat because it seems that you will need those at least until next March or April.

Winter and snow have arrived in Hungary – PHOTOS, VIDEO

October Snow

The weather in Hungary this autumn seems to be quite unusual. Just a couple of weeks ago, it was still over 20 °C. Moreover, for a few days, it even reached as high as 27 °C in Budapest, for example.

Furthermore, we just reported that intense warming is forecasted from the middle of next week in Hungary. Due to the warming, the daily average temperature can rise to over 20 °C again.

Despite these seemingly unusual warm periods, it seems like winter arrived in Hungary between two weeks of warm weather.

Several sources, including the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) and Időkép, reported snowfall on Sunday and last night.

Időkép posted an article about the late-night snowfall at Bánkút yesterday evening. In their article, they said that about 10 centimetres of snow fell on October 13 in Bánkút.

Furthermore, they estimated that the snowfall might continue all night, leaving 20 centimetres of snow behind by the morning.

Undoubtedly, it is quite unusual for winter to arrive so soon, and many people have taken the opportunity to take pictures and play in the snow.

Fehér Sas guesthouse, as well as Időkép, have shared photos of the phenomenon on social media. Meanwhile, Index shared videos on their site.

Additionally, OMSZ said that thick layers of snow cover several high peaks of the North Hungarian Mountains.

Altogether, it is estimated that there could be 20-25 centimetres of snow in the Bükk Mountains, while in some areas, it could potentially reach 30 centimetres. Moreover, approximately 4 centimetres of snow cover the Mátra as well.

The Hungarian Meteorological Service posted an explanation of the phenomenon on their Facebook page. In short, cold air coming from the north and northeast caused the snowfall. Due to the inflow of cold air, the high precipitation of the area turned into snow instead of rain.

Furthermore, the service also highlighted the message of Bánkúti Turistaház’s (Bánkút Tourist House) team. They called people’s attention to the dangers of walking in the woods in the area right now.

The snow is wet and came early, so most trees have not yet lost their leaves. Therefore, branches have a high risk of breaking off and falling on people, causing injury or even death.

In fact, the wet snow caused damages to the power grid, and it is unknown when the damage will be repaired, they said.

Temperature to exceed 20°C next week! – Weather forecast

good_weather_budapest

Intense warming is forecasted from the middle of next week in Hungary. The daily average temperature can rise to over 20°C.

This autumn, we could already experience some extreme weather conditions in Hungary that will seemingly stay with us in the forthcoming period as well. On Wednesday, the temperature fell below 2°C in the highest points of Hungary, having brought raindrops and even snowfall to the Kékestető, Bükk and Mátra – reported by 444.hu.

However, this week’s winterlike weather will soon be replaced by intense warming by the middle of next week.

As Időkép reports, the reason for this is that a western, southwestern flow will replace the current northern flow due to the intensive cyclone activity over the Atlantic Ocean. On the front of the cyclones, more and more warm air masses are arriving over the continent. As a result, the average daily temperature of 10-13°C will rise to over 20°C in the middle of next week.

A slight warming can already be experienced during this weekend. After high humidity and frosty temperatures in the morning, there will be a lot of sunshine during the day, raising the daily average temperature to 15 degrees or even above on Saturday and Sunday.

Next week, the southwestern flow will intensify, bringing dry, warm air above the region. The dawns will be a little milder, bringing increasing temperatures during the day.

From next Wednesday, the peak temperature will exceed 20°C in some parts of Hungary

– reported by the Hungarian news portal 24.hu.

In the Hungarian capital, the highest daily temperature is expected next Thursday (19°C) and Friday (18°C) that will be followed by clouds and showers on the weekend of October 23rd. Therefore, we should take advantage of the sunny warm days ahead.

It also seems like this nice weather will stay for quite a while.

This makes it the perfect weather to organise some interesting programmes. In order to make sure you make the most of this beautiful autumn weather, we collected some things you can do and places you can visit during this autumn.

For those of you who miss the festival vibes, you do not have to be disheartened either. Autumn is the season of harvest, and thus, many cities hold wine or grape harvest celebrations, and Budapest is no exception. This year, the Budapest Wine Festival is organised for the 30th time and will be held at the Buda Castle between the 23rd and the 26th of September. There will be plenty of exhibitors for both food and drinks, with a special focus on unique wines, of course. You can also visit Sopron, home of the Kékfrankos, as there will be a similar, albeit smaller grape harvest festival between the 10th and 12th of September, says Programturizmus.

Budapest’s weather is one of the most unpredictable in Europe!

Hungary restriction Budapest

Based on a number of different criteria, Uswitch.com has ranked Budapest #9 in terms of unpredictability out of all the capitals of the continent in a four-way tie with Luxembourg, Belgrade, and Skopje.

Most people are no stranger to weather which takes an unfortunate turn when it really should not. Apparently, you are more likely to experience that in Budapest than many other capital cities in Europe. While perhaps the ninth spot is not terribly high, that is likely for the better, hvg.hu reported.

Uswitch used a number of different statistics to come up with an aggregate score for each of the capital cities on their list of 35 different capitals where they had enough data to go by. They accounted for cloud cover, frost, precipitation (as well as the frequency of wet days), along with the daily mean temperature and the duration of sunshine, and then they rated the cities on a scale of 0-100, uswitch.com says.

Budapest, Hungary, along with the three other aforementioned cities, received 55 points and took the ninth place for the most unpredictable frosty days.

The “winner” of the list is Tallinn, Estonia, scoring 69 points on the scale. This is only one point ahead of Riga, Latvia, which itself only beats Finland’s Helsinki by one. In case you are wondering, the last spot is taken up by Valletta, Malta: it got as low as only 10 points.

Coats up! Nearly freezing temperatures to come this weekend in Hungary

weather_transport_people

This summer we could experience extreme weather conditions in Hungary and what’s more, even bigger temperature changes are expected for the last days of August. For the second half of the week, Arctic air masses bring extremely cold and rainy weather to Hungary, as a result of which nearly freezing temperatures can be expected in the coldest parts of the country. Weather forecast!

This year’s extreme weather conditions will stay with us at the end of the summer as well. After the cool spring caused by anticyclones in April-May, we had a very stormy summer in Hungary with occasional heatwaves or extraordinary supercells. After all these, it might not be surprising that the end of summer also holds an unexpected turn in the weather.

Due to a large-scale, stable anticyclone that has recently formed over Great Britain,

the air cools down significantly for the second half of the week, bringing Arctic air masses to Hungary.

Presumably, the sunny, slightly windy weather of this week will bring drastic changes on Thursday night when the first cold front will arrive, followed by a significant temperature drop. On Saturday, the weather turns autumnal, especially in the north-eastern landscapes where the average daily temperature will be around 13°C. Thus, heating may even be necessary – reported by the Hungarian news portal 24.hu. The national average will be about 6-17 degrees at dawn;

however, in the coldest parts of Hungary, such as Zabar or Szécsény, the temperature can drop to 2-3°C.

During the day, the temperature will increase; in permanently sunny places, it can reach 17-25°C. However, instead of sunshine, cloudy and rainy weather can be expected at the end of the week, bringing showers and thunderstorms in the upcoming days. Most of the precipitation is expected in the southern and eastern parts of Hungary. Overall, the temperature will be at least 7°C below the normal value at the end of August.

According to the long-term forecast, the cool weather will stay with us until the beginning of September. From 3rd-4th September, warming is expected, and temperatures will return to the average values of 21-26°C.

The extreme weather conditions caused by the climate change will probably stay with us in September as well. Presumably, the changeable weather in Hungary will require both a winter coat and summer shorts. Currently, another significant cold front is forecasted in mid-September.
